Church Life 2017 ISSUE 2 Church Life is published monthly Royal Oak First United Methodist Church 320 West Seventh Street Royal Oak, Michigan Phone (248) office@rofum.org Editor: Sam Garrett sgarrett@rofum.org Webmaster: Bob Demyanovich Proofers: Virginia Borts, Kay LaCombe Contributors: The Congregation February 5 for March Issue We are in the midst of shift here at Royal Oak First. The average worship attendance in 2015 was 202. Last Sunday we welcomed 383 folks who gathered for worship. We are quickly becoming a large church. This shift is significant. This shift is exciting. It is also frightening. Tim Keller writes, We tend to think of the chief difference between churches mainly in denominational or theological terms, but that underestimates the impact of size on how a church operates. The difference between how a church of 100 and a church of 1,000 function may be much greater than the difference between a Presbyterian and a Baptist church of the same size. If we want to ride with this wave of growth, then these are a few of the things we will need to consider: More programs. A larger church will need more programs for its increasingly diverse congregation to connect and engage. Programs for young families and young adults. Programs for seniors and empty nesters. The larger church must continue to offer more opportunities for people to connect. Intentional Hospitality. Embracing the difference between being friendly, which we are, and being hospitable is essential as a church becomes larger. How will newcomers get here? How will they be identified by the church? How will we help to connect them? Increased Excellence. The bigger the church the more quality we must bring to our programs. Events cannot just be thrown together. The bar The Shift must be raised across the board. Openness to Change. The larger the church the more decisions need to be made and the more quickly they need to be made. It becomes harder to get buy in from everyone to move forward. Change will be driven by vision rather than by tradition or personal commitment. I am committed to helping us navigate this shift. I am thankful for your courage, flexibility, and patience as we continue to adjust our sails to the blowing winds of God s Spirit.

PAGE 3 CHURCH LIFE FEBRUARY 2017 Hi there! LET THE SPIRIT MOVE YOU ROYAL OAK FIRST SPIRITUAL RETREAT As we continue to move forward in 2017, and after the wonderful Leadership Retreat we had ln January, our next step is going to be a Spiritual Retreat. This will be held on Friday, March 3 (includes dinner) from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm (yes, you do get to go home and sleep in your own bed!) We will continue on Saturday, March 4th from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm (includes continental breakfast and snacks). John Laster, a lifelong church leader and our consultant with New Horizons, will be the keynote speaker. It promises to be an enlightening event as we discuss how we can determine what our unique gifts are and discover how they lend themselves to what God is calling us to do. Please fill out the Spiritual Retreat form, available in the office or on the Here I Am, Lord table in Fellowship Hall. Please return them to the church on the lower level at your convenience. You may also call Laurie O Donnell at or her at lodonnell@rofum.org. WELCOME TO THE FAMILY My name is Cathy Matthews, and I am going to head up our Digital Church. We are not only tearing down walls inside the building, but also on social media platforms. Our goal is to expand our church and lead people to Jesus even if they never step foot in our building. I have a passion for connecting with people and helping them see the joy with which the Spirit fills me and how amazing our God is. I grew up in the area and now live with my husband of almost 9 years, Matt, in New Baltimore, MI. We have two kids, our son, Cameron, who is three and a half, and Charlotte, who turns one this month. I am looking forward to serving the church and if there is anything you need, please ask! I can be reached at cmatthews@rofum.org. UMW NEWS FEBRUARY 2 MEETING INFORMATION 10:30 AM EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING 1:00 PM GENERAL MEETING AND REFRESHMENTS United Methodist Women are pleased to present an informative afternoon centering upon the mission work of Song and Spirit Institute for Peace. The Institute, located in Berkley, works to promote a greater understanding among people of diverse religious, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. The story will be told to us by Greg Allen, who is instrumental in the community work there as well as our own Fred Bowden who made the initial connection with the group. United Methodist Women have been making and delivering warm bed mats to the Institute to be delivered to homeless members of our community. On what could possibly be a cold day in February, please join with us to hear stories that will warm your heart. The program will be presented in Fellowship Hall and will include music and refreshments. Any questions can be directed to Mary Nahhat at PRAYER VIGIL FOR REV. MARSHAL DUNLAP Our former pastor, Rev. Marshal Dunlap has been waiting for a kidney donor for a long time. We are holding an all-day prayer vigil to lift him up on Valentine s Day, February 14. He has just returned home from another 3 day stay at Royal Oak Beaumont after they put a new hemodialysis catheter in his shoulder. I think it would be powerful if we all focus and pray for Marshall together. If you don t want to pray alone, you could find a prayer partner. All we ask for is a simple prayer once an hour. We have faith that our prayers make a difference. Love and God Bless, Peggy Gill
PAGE 4 CHURCH LIFE FEBRUARY 2017 MISSION SPOTLIGHT BIRTHDAY CLUB AT METHODIST CHILDREN S HOME SOCIETY For many children, birthdays are a day they wait for all year surrounded by the love of their family & friends, waiting with anticipation to see what their presents will be, lightheartedly indulging in pizza, cake and ice cream. However, for a child in the foster care system, birthdays can have a very different connotation. For a child who is yearning each & every day for a family to open their heart & home, a birthday is a reminder of another year without a family to celebrate the milestone and another year further away from getting the childhood they deserve. Change the way kids at MCHS feel about birthdays! On the third Thursday of every month, the children who have birthdays in the respective month is able to have a birthday bash! The children are allowed to invite anyone who is important to them, and we, as birthday club sponsors, are asked to provide the following: 1. Presents: The children make wish lists asking for three birthday gifts. The total for these gifts usually ranges from $75-$125. We would purchase and wrap the gifts for each child. 2. Food: Provide food. We can purchase pizza and salad or have a different menu, but it must be provided by a professional kitchen (we can t make it at home and bring it in). We would also provide the cakes, candles, soda, plates, napkins, cups and silverware so everyone can enjoy a meal together. The average is usually around 25 people attending and eating dinner, but it is subject to change based on the number of children celebrating. 3. Decorations: Pick a theme and get creative! Balloons, tablecloths and streamers are a great place to start. Think superheroes, cartoons and professional athletes! Even better is asking the children what theme they would like! One of the places your mission gifts are supporting is Methodist Children s Home Society, a foster care facility in Redford. We are happy to be developing a relationship with MCHS and doing what we can to help enrich the lives of the residents there. One of the ways we can help is by providing birthday parties for the youth! Do you remember how excited your own children were when planning their birthday parties? Trying to decide who to invite, what they would eat, and how to decorate. Did they want a chocolate cake or vanilla? all the things we take for granted in our own families. We are excited to be able to provide the same excitement for the children at MCHS. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. SERVICE DAY On January 16, many of your youth and adults who had a day off work and school decided to take the church outside our walls by being involved in the MLK Service Day Project! They began at Royal Oak High School sharing breakfast, hearing Rev. Faith Fowler speak and then actively made a difference! They worked on assembling hygiene kits for Cass, toilet paper kits for Brightmoor while others were stuffing dolls for the Smile Project at the high school. Some traveled by bus to the Redford-Brightmoor Initiative, deep cleaning their free store. Thank you to everyone that helped to make the Martin Luther King Jr. Day projects at ROHS happen. It was a great way to spend a day off school with my daughter. And Pastor Faith Fowler was inspirational as always. ~ Robin Richardson
PAGE 5 CHURCH LIFE FEBRUARY 2017 WHY DO WE NEED POWER POINT IN WORSHIP? As I begin the process of forming a Media Team to do Power Point at all three services, I suspect there are some people who question the necessity of having hymns and liturgy projected when we have hymnals and bullteins. Certainly anyone who wishes can still open their hymnal and sing the hymns and look at the bulletin to read the liturgy and find out what is next in the service. Those things are not obsolete, but bulletins and hymnals don t quite meet the needs of all who attend worship. So since we are able to do more, it is a good thing to do all that we can to make worship as meaningful as possible for as many people as possible. Sure, technology is the in thing. Everyone is doing it. Even when we attended worship in Methodist churches in Cuba and Brazil, they used Power Point! Sure, the music director likes it because it gets people s heads up and out of the book so that the voices are louder. But over the years I used it as a pastor and as I served as a volunteer on the media team after I retired, I have observed some other reasons that have helped even the most severe critic rethink their position and say, Well, if it helps them, I guess it doesn t hurt me, so I m glad to have it. Consider these people: 1: Young parents who are trying to hold young babies and balance a hymnal or hold a bulletin. Babies love to grab at pages, making it difficult for the parent to read or sing. 2: People in a bit of a mid-life crisis who really should be wearing reading glasses, but don t want to admit it yet, can see the big words on the wall, but not the smaller words in the bulletin or hymnal. (Or even those who have made the leap to reading glasses, but happened to forget to bring them in the rush out the door.) 3: Those people with arthritic hands, who find holding a hymnal painful, don t have to deal with extra pain as they sing. 4: Those who are hard of hearing are able to know exactly where we are in the service. 5: Kids who are used to lots of media and need an extra incentive to pay attention benefit from having images as well as words on the wall. That is why I often like to illustrate songs so that we think about the words we are singing. These are just some of the reasons I have for wanting to provide Power Point for those who need it. I d like to close with the story of Ruth who was a 98 year old woman from Wyandotte First. After a few months of serving on their media team for the contemporary service, I asked if I could do Power Point, Ruth came up to me after the service and said, Are you the young lady who is putting all those pictures on the wall? I rather liked being called a young lady but fear immediately rose in my heart. I was sure she was going to read the riot act to me, telling me how we didn t need such new-fangled things in worship. I nodded and she went on to say, I want to talk to you about that. I took a deep breath and said a quick prayer for patience; after all, I knew she was almost 100 years old. She went on to say, Last Sunday, I could read every word. But this Sunday there were some words I couldn t read. My fear suddenly subsided and I realized this was an opportunity for learning. So I suggested that we go back into the sanctuary and look at the words together to see which ones we could and could not read. We discovered that she could read white on black better than black on white. So, when it was possible, I used the font I knew Ruth liked and she was so appreciative. On the last Sunday she was in church, just a week and a half before she passed away at age 101, she patted me on the arm and said, Thanks, I could read it all today. What a blessing it was to help this saint of God be able to praise her maker all the days of her long life as a full participant in worship with all her beloved church family. Yes, I know many of you don t need it, but I hope that you will rejoice with me that we can help those who do need it to be active participants in worship. If you are interested in being on the media team, give me a call at We need lots of help. Thank you for the opportunity to serve God in this way. Diana Goudie
PAGE 6 CHURCH LIFE FEBRUARY 2017 HEALTH MINISTRY NEWS WEIGHT CONTROL: MAKE MANAGEABLE CHANGES THAT LAST Losing weight can seem daunting, but it s a worthwhile journey that can begin with a few simple steps. Start by integrating healthy behaviors into your routine. Counting calories, exercising, and restricting high-calorie foods are all effective ways to lose weight, but setting goals that are too aggressive reduces the likelihood that you ll stick with them. Instead of vowing to exercise for an hour a day every day, try a 15-minute walk three days a week. Rather than a drastic diet change, eat a healthy breakfast daily and have a serving of vegetables at suppertime. Small changes are more likely to become habits and part of your lifestyle. Start with one or two realistic goals and add more over time. If a setback occurs, don t give up. Forgive yourself for the slip-up, and think about what you might do differently next time. Once a goal is achieved, reward yourself. Buying a new outfit or spending a morning biking or walking with friends lets you enjoy the results of your healthier lifestyle. Weight loss benefits may arrive quickly Weight loss does not have to be substantial to yield health benefits. A 200-pound person who loses 10 pounds has already lowered his or her risk for chronic diseases related to obesity. The loss of additional weight brings even greater improvement in risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Weight loss brings: Improved blood pressure Better cholesterol numbers Lower blood sugar ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE STAFF PARISH RELATIONS COMMITTEE The Staff Parish Relations Committee would like to welcome four new employees to the Royal Oak First family. George Marck will co-shepherd the Saturday evening service and take on the New Member integration. Besides Saturday evening, George will be in the church on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Cathy Matthews will be in charge of all social media pages and pictures. Myra Moreland will co-shepherd the Saturday evening service with George Marck as the evening worship coordinator and person in charge of hospitality. She will also be able to fill in for Pastor Jeff, if needed. Renee McKarge was approved for a 14 week ministry internship. She will be assisting with Lent, retreats, and prayer services.
