1 Royal Oak First United Methodist Church 320 W Seventh St Royal Oak, Michigan (248) Fax: (248) office@rofum.org Prelude April 24, :00 am Traditional Worship The People of God Gather Welcome in the name of our Lord. As the Prelude begins, let us quiet our voices and cell phones as we prepare our hearts and spirits for worship. A Medley of Hymns Carillon Ringers Choral Offering I Will Enter His Gates (He Has Made Me Glad) Leona Von Brethorst Sam Garrett & Grace Huber * Call to Worship: A Celebration of Return to the ROFUM Sanctuary, Reborn Pastor: The time has come for this congregation of Christ s Holy Church, under God s leadership, to enter and dedicate this sanctuary after undergoing renovation. We re-consecrate this place for the ministry of God s Holy Word and Sacraments. Having provided refuge and comfort for God s people, we bless it to resume its use. We now end our short leave of this consecrated space, lifting up our hearts in thanksgiving for the gift it will be in years ahead. Blessed be the name of God, whose Word will be proclaimed within this hallowed place. Generations will pray their prayers and sing your praises here, may your Spirit bless countless worshipers. Our Lord s Supper will be celebrated here and nurture us through our journey in faith. Here, we will rejoice as believers confess their faith in Christ. Here, we will baptize our children and new believers and will mourn our dead. Here, new families will be created through marriage, exchanging vows to live in love. From within these walls many will go out to serve you in the world. As we re-enter this house continuing our shared journey of faith,
2 We lift our hearts, O God, giving thanks for the planners and workers who accomplished this work. The season of exile is now over and we re-enter these sacred walls, praying you will bless us with the renewing life of your Holy Spirit. Let our worship bless you and our efforts to reach the world for Christ be blessed by fruits of effective witness and life-giving mission. Grant that we grow and flourish in the strength of Jesus love. Amen. * Hymn #57 (UMH) O For A Thousand Tongues to Sing **** * Passing of the Peace * Fellowship Hymn Spirit Song (Hymnal #347) (please stand next to someone while we sing) Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs. Mark Hayes Sanctus Choir; Ben Smith, bass * The Doxology (Hymn #95) * Prayer of Dedication **** The People of God are Met by God s Word Scripture Joshua 3:7, 14-17; 4:8, 11, 14, The Lord said to Joshua, This day I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, so that they may know that I will be with you as I was with Moses... When the people set out from their tents to cross over the Jordan, the priests bearing the ark of the covenant were in front of the people. Now the Jordan overflows all its banks throughout the time of harvest. So when those who bore the ark had come to the Jordan, and the feet of the priests bearing the ark were dipped in the edge of the water, the waters flowing from above stood still, rising up in a single heap far off at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan, while those flowing toward the sea of the Arabah, the Dead Sea, were wholly cut off. Then the people crossed over opposite Jericho. While all Israel were crossing over on dry ground, the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, until the entire nation finished crossing over the Jordan. The Israelites did as Joshua commanded. They took up twelve stones out of the middle of the Jordan, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, as the Lord told Joshua, carried them over with them to the place where they camped, and laid them down there.
4 As soon as all the people had finished crossing over, the ark of the Lord, and the priests, crossed over in front of the people. On that day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they stood in awe of him, as they had stood in awe of Moses, all the days of his life. The people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and they camped in Gilgal on the east border of Jericho. Those twelve stones, which they had taken out of the Jordan, Joshua set up in Gilgal, saying to the Israelites, When your children ask their parents in time to come, What do these stones mean? then you shall let your children know, Israel crossed over the Jordan here on dry ground. For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you crossed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we crossed over, so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, and so that you may fear the Lord your God forever. (Translation: New Revised Standard Version) Sermon Crossing Jordan Rev.
