The People of God Speak and Listen to God Pastoral Prayer
2 Unison Prayer of the People Merciful and loving God: your Spirit has touched us and made us alive; you have fashioned us into a community of faith. You have awakened us to love you, discern your ways and live in obedience, love our neighbors, and hear the cry of the needy. In-as-much as we have lived this out, you have made us a witness to the people and a catalyst to transform this world into a place of love and peace. For all this, we give you thanks. Where we have fallen short: we ask forgiveness and turn to you for help. We yearn for the completion of your work in us. In the name of Christ Jesus, our Lord, let it be so. Moments of Silent Prayer for Others and Ourselves Prayers for our church family: Shirley Shafer; Peggy Waisanen; Athena Milewski; Lori Vickers; Roger & Jeanette Cuthbertson; Jim Tripoli; Al Simmons; The Skelton Family; Gail McHale; Shirley Ednie; Jean MacIntyre; The Dombrowski Family; Dan Holcomb; Vel Lowman; Cathy Marsh; Anna Cline Prayers for our extended family: Chuck Kahler; Carol Bell; Bill Bartley; Henry Freeman; Bill Kincannon; Bob Lechner; Renee Baxter; Caroline and Chris Lussenhop & Family; Denise Nelson; Michelle Smith; Rachel McClain; Richard Robinson; Ida Whitehead; Joyce Barber; Margaret McArthur; Michelle Matthee; Ed Cline; Lisa Preckel; Charles Halsig Hospitalized: Dori Bridson, Royal Oak Beaumont Sympathy to the family and friends of Shirley Stepke, aunt of Mary Anne Tempest, 10/2015. Homebound Member of the Week: Florence Martin Words of Assurance The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. The People of God Renew Commitment * Hymn #217 (UMH) Away in a Manger Presentation of Tithes and Offerings **** Offertory In the Bleak Midwinter Christina Rosetti/Gustav Holst Liz Wright, Soprano; Sanctus Choir arr. Keith Christopher * The Doxology (Hymn #95) * Prayer of Dedication The People of God are Met by God s Word Scripture John 12:1-11 Six days before Passover, Jesus entered Bethany where Lazarus, so recently raised from the dead, was living. Lazarus and his sisters invited Jesus to dinner at their home. Martha served. Lazarus was one of
3 those sitting at the table with them. Mary came in with a jar of very expensive aromatic oils, anointed and massaged Jesus feet, and then wiped them with her hair. The fragrance of the oils filled the house. Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, even then getting ready to betray him, said, Why wasn t this oil sold and the money given to the poor? It would have easily brought three hundred silver pieces. He said this not because he cared two cents about the poor but because he was a thief. He was in charge of their common funds, but also embezzled them. Jesus said, Let her alone. She s anticipating and honoring the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you. You don t always have me. Word got out among the Jews that he was back in town. The people came to take a look, not only at Jesus but also at Lazarus, who had been raised from the dead. So the high priests plotted to kill Lazarus because so many of the Jews were going over and believing in Jesus on account of him. Sermon Being Scrooge Rev. John Hice First in the series: In Tune With the Carol The Celebration of the Lord s Supper Invitation Please continue on page 13 of the United Methodist Hymnal. Prayer after Communion All: God our God, you fill the hungry with good things and send the self-satisfied away empty. In this Eucharist you have filled us with the word and the bread of life of your Son Jesus Christ. Make us hunger now for his coming in the hearts and the homes of all. Fill us with his spirit of service and self-forgetting love, that through us, he may become near to people. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.
