1 Church Life 2016 ISSUE 11 Church Life is published monthly Royal Oak First United Methodist Church 320 West Seventh Street Royal Oak, Michigan Phone (248) Editor: Sam Garrett Webmaster: Bob Demyanovich Proofers: Virginia Borts, Kay LaCombe Contributors: The Congregation November 13 for December Issue In essentials unity, in nonessentials liberty, in all things charity. - Attributed to John Wesley Jesus had two categories of people: neighbors and enemies. He said we were to love them both. - Pastor Jeff As your pastor, I don t talk a lot about politics at church. It s not because I don t care about politics - I am actually kind of a political junkie. And it s not because I don t have opinions - I have opinions, some of them pretty strong. And it s not because I don t want to share my opinions with you - I d be happy to sit with anybody, any time and talk about the issues that matter most to me. I welcome those conversations. It is just that, as your pastor, I think my job is different. I think we, the church, have a bigger, more important opportunity. Together we can create the kind of space where love, hope, kindness, and relationships are most important. Together we can create a space where we can disagree without disregarding each other. I want our church to be a place where Democrats and Republicans can work side by side feeding the hungry, clothing the homeless, visiting the sick, and caring for the children. The world needs signs of unity - and it is my prayer that Royal Oak First United Methodist will be a place that transcends the divisions of our culture. This November our country will elect its next president. Like every presidential election of my lifetime this one has become contentious and divisive. There is a lot at stake and I hope each of you will go to the polls and exercise your right to vote. When you get there bring your faith into the booth with you. Vote your conscience. Vote your values. Vote what you think your faith demands of you and our leaders. Why I Don t Talk About Politics, And then, no matter who wins, come back here to Royal Oak First United Methodist Church the next Sunday and be reminded that what happened in the voting booth that Tuesday pales in comparison to what happened on the cross two thousand years ago. Remember that we are in this together and that Jesus has room at his table for us all. No matter who wins, when we come together we can show a divided and divisive world that people can differ, even differ on the most important matters, and still find their unity in the love and care for each other as well as for our neighbors (and yes even for our enemies.)

Come join with us for a road trip like no other. CELEBRATE! THE BEST IS YET TO COME! On Sunday, November 13, we will celebrate that the best is yet to come! As the culmination of our 2016 Stewardship Campaign, we will have a party! We have spent the last month sharing our best stories and now, just like the folks did after the sacred ceremony at the Wedding in Cana, we will gather together after our service. On that day, family and friends attended a wedding celebration and experienced a miracle that signaled that the party was not over and that the best was yet to come. On Celebration Sunday, following each service, we will join together for a celebration of the miracles happening within our church. Like all good wedding celebrations, there will be friends, stories, food, refreshments, music, and maybe even dancing. We look forward to seeing you at the party!

3 PAGE 3 CHURCH LIFE NOVEMBER 2016 YOUTH CHOIR NEWS It s already a great year in Youth Choirs, and to coin a phrase, the best is yet to come! And we have just gotten started, so feel free to come and join us any time! Our Holy COW (Church On Wednesday) program will continue in a choir only format for the month of November. Our three children s choirs, which encompasses preschool through 8th grade, currently meet on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 pm under the leadership of Allison Harris, Jennifer Semivan, and Caleb Williams. Just a note we will NOT meet on Wednesday, November 23, due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. We will return to our usual schedule of a meal, choir, and bible class in December. December brings our very special musical event, Feast of Carols. All music groups in the church take part in this holiday concert which is a gift to our community. Make sure you have this date on your calendar it will take place on Sunday, December 11 at 4:00 pm! There will be a very important rehearsal for all choirs on Saturday, December 10 at 10:00 am in the Sanctuary. Invite friends and family to join you for this celebration. You won t want to miss it! AS WE GATHER SERVICE IS GROWING! Our monthly As We Gather Service is now expanding to twice-monthly! We will now host our As We Gather Service on the second and last Thursdays of each month in the Sanctuary. Please join us for this exciting worship. HEALTH MINISTRY NEWS FLU FIGHTERS 5 WAYS TO STAY HEALTHY DURING COLD AND FLU SEASON As the weather gets colder, cold and flu viruses tend to pick up steam. Cold and flu season typically ramps up in fall and peaks in mid-winter, bringing with it germs that are ready to put your immune system to the test. It s almost impossible to stay away from all germs, but there are actions you can take to create a healthy foundation and lower your chances of getting sick. Try these strategies to keep colds and the flu at bay: Get plenty of sleep. In order to stay healthy, your immune system needs sleep. Fighting common infections is tough when you re run-down from lack of rest. Adults should get seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Manage stress. Chronic Stress can lower your immunity and make you more prone to colds and the flu. In addition, stress makes the flu shot less effective. Take steps to take control of your stress level by setting priorities, asking for help, and setting aside time for relaxing activities. Exercise regularly. Regular exercise is important to good health. While no direct link has been established between exercise and a strong immune system, exercise is a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle. Adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week and do musclestrengthening exercise two days a week. Choose healthy foods. Fruits and vegetables are packed with antioxidants that support good health, so make sure there are plenty of them on your plate. Wash up. One of the easiest ways to get rid of germs is to wash your hands. Wet hands with clean running water, lather with soap, and scrub for at least 20 seconds. Make sure to clean the backs of your hands, under your fingernails, and between fingers. Then rinse your hands and dry them with a clean towel. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol based hand sanitizer.
