OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION November 1, 2018 Issue 6 The Liberty Bell News Letter of the Kansas Society Sons of the American Revolution The President s Corner by Dennis Nelson Bringing the History of the American Revolution to Kansas How do we do that? Kansas had no battles and there are no recognized Patriots buried here (at least not yet). Let s start with the SAR color guard. No one expects to see colonial militia or the continental army in Kansas. That is why it is so important and special to be in the color guard. After all, we represent the original veterans of the United States, our ancestors. we can begin to reach many more children and adults to serve the mission of the SAR. There is a free DVD and Youtube presentation on how to do this program. This program is show and tell, a chance to tell stories about the American Revolution, and interactive with questions and answers. We all know that to see and touch the items adds to the experience. If you have interest in being part of these programs, talk with your chapter. Each chapter will need financial help and color guard participation to be successful. Next is the Georgia Traveling Trunk or the Colorado Patriot Chest programs. It s a trunk filled with replicas from the Revolutionary War era clothing, toys, currency, hunting, military, kitchen utensils and household items. The more unique the items are to current times, the more interesting to children and adults. SAR members and women in colonial clothing make presentations to schools, scouts, churches, civic groups and history fairs. The goal is to engage communities, foster true patriotism and preserve American history. Colorado SAR has already done 450 presentations to over 11,000 school children. It costs at least $500 plus a trunk to have an array of items. There are lists available from NSSAR of items to purchase. The SAR Outreach Education committee will reimburse up to 75% of $500 for qualified items. So for $125 plus a trunk

Kansas Compatriots in attendance were President Dennis Nelson, Vice President Bobbie Hulse and his wife Debbie, Trustee Brooks Lyles and his wife Diane Ungvarsky, President of the Ladies Auxiliary, Membership Secretary and Registrar Tim Peterman, Chancellor Stu Conrad, Historian John Forbes, SCD Secretary Bryan Wampler and Chaplain Vern Welkner and his wife Linda. 3 3 Committees are where the work of the SAR is done and Kansas is well represented in many of the most important committees the SAR has. Education, Americanism, History, Color Guard, Budget, Library, Chaplains and many others have Kansas compatriots on them making the decisions that impact many of our most visible programs. If you are interested in joining any of the National Committees first get involved in that committees work in your Chapter and at the State Level then ask the President to recommend you for appointment by the President General to the National Committee. Day two was the Trustees Meeting which, includes General Officer and Committee Reports, and is where the major decisions effecting the operations of the society are voted on by the Trustees. Changes to the SAR Constitution and By Laws are voted on at Congress, but more real work gets done at the Trustees Meetings than Congress. For more information on the actions that took place at the Fall Leadership Meeting ask your Chapter President for a copy of the Trustees Report from the November Board of Governors Meeting. Saturday evening we had another banquet and our guest speaker was Kevin Graffagnino, the Director of the Clements Library on the Campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor who spoke on Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys. By the way, the Clements Library holds the largest collection of Revolutionary War materials west of the Ohio Valley and they would love to show you what they have.

4 Three Compatriots in Common Jim Nelson was inducted at the August 2018 Monticello chapter meeting. His sponsor was his brother, Dick, who is a longtime member of Delaware Crossing. Pictured with the Nelson brothers is Peter Grassl (Center). All three graduated from Vermillion SD high school between 1959 and 1969! Dick and Peter were acquainted before the SAR. They had met during Kansas City area University of South Dakota alumni meetings. It was quite a surprise when they ran into one another at a Delaware Crossing meeting 20 years ago! Interesting how guys from South Dakota meet in another locale! Monticello Chapter Presents Lenexa Hills Elementary School a Flag Certificate with more than 250 in Attendance The Lenexa Hills Elementary School is located at 8650 Haven Street in Lenexa, Kansas just east of the Shawnee Mission School District Baseball Diamonds and the Kansas Army National Guard Armory on 87th Street Parkway. Lenexa Hills is the newest school in the Shawnee Mission School District serving students in Pre-kindergarten through the sixth grade. Lenexa Hills students will eventually attend Westridge Middle School and Shawnee Mission West High School. Lenexa Hills construction was completed in late August of 2018 and before the doors had even opened the school started flying the United States and Kansas Flags on a newly installed flag pole with ground lighting. Lenexa Hills Elementary was submitted to the Monticello Chapter Leadership by Compatriot Bryan Wampler who lives in the adjoining neighborhood. The school is along the daily walking route of Compatriot Wampler and his wife Jennifer who watched the construction from the installation of the surveying stakes to the completion of construction. I immediately thought of submitting the school for the patriotic commendation when I saw the flags go up, saw the ground lighting on that first evening and also noticed that the school principal was already working at the school said Wampler. The Chapter Leadership immediately approved the submission at the following Executive Committee Meeting, which is held on the second Thursday of each month one week prior to the monthly chapter meeting, which is held at Pegah s Family Restaurant at W 87th Street, Lenexa, Kansas the third Thursday of each month. The school Principal, Mr. Michael Brewer, was contacted and informed that the Monticello Chapter wanted to recognize the school with a Flag Certificate. Mr. Brewer responded with an message stating "We want to model patriotism whenever we can---including how we display and care for our flags. Mr. Brewer was extremely pleased and asked if we would be willing to present the

5 certificate during an all school assembly, and the chapter quickly agreed. The preparation for the Flag Certificate was truly a team effort. Compatriot Lyman Miller printed the certificate, Compatriot Craig Dillavou purchased the frame, Compatriot Wampler coordinated the event with the school and Color Guard members and Compatriot Miller and his wife Betty brought the flags used during the ceremony. The Monticello Chapter President Steve Crawford and other chapter leadership feel that it is important to spotlight such events with members of the Chapter s Color Guard. The call went out for this early afternoon event and members of the Color Guard cleared their calendars so they could attend. We could not have received a better reception said Mrs. Betty Miller, wife of Compatriot Lyman Miller. The two front office secretaries were welcoming and delighted to have us there. Compatriot Craig Dillavou arrived early with information and examples of posters and broachers sharing them with Principal Brewer who said he will be sharing the information with his teaching staff. Compatriot Craig Dillavou served as the event Master of Ceremony. The Color Guard Commander was Compatriot Lyman Miller and Compatriots Alan Martin, Dewey Fry, Dennis Nelson and Charles Goslin served in the Color Guard. Compatriots Dillavou and Goslin are long time member of the State Society s "Drums of Freedom" group. We were pleased to have our State President Dennis Nelson and State Color Guard Commander Dewy Fry participate in the event! Also in attendance were Mrs. Better Miller, Mrs. Pat Fry and Compatriot Wampler. It was wonderful to see the reactions and looks on the faces of the students when they saw the uniforms said members of the Color Guard. Students from each class immediately stopped as they entered through the doorways into the gym where the event was held making exclamations of delight when they saw the color guard. The event began by Principal Baxter asking his Student Vice Principal for the day to lead the Pledge of Allegiance. The students were fully engaged during the Pledge of Allegiance and there was no doubt that they wanted to ensure everyone heard their recitation of the pledge. What a good group of children said Mrs. Pat Fry. They were so attentive and seemed to enjoy the uniforms and the ceremony. Compatriot Dillavou began the presentation by talking about the Sons of American Revolution highlighting the organizations founding in 1889 and the continued focus on education and the remembrance of the sacrifices of those who fought for our Nations freedom. Without question, all involved with this event were pleased to see the patriotic focus of the school administration, teachers, staff and students and look forward to working with the Lenexa Hills Elementary School in the future!

6 A message from the Chaplain General of the NSSAR Fellow Compatriots, The shooting at the synagogue in Pittsburgh compels me to write to you. I ask that we pray for peace in the midst of divergent convictions, that we resolve to intensify efforts toward unity in the midst of diversity, and that we come forward in our communities as we never have before in recognition of those who serve at the risk of their lives. This is, of course, only the latest in a disturbing series of mass criminal events in recent years. I am no alarmist but I believe that we are in a divisive time that holds the possibility of inflicting permanent damage on this democratic republic which we in SAR so greatly cherish. I write because this is a spiritual problem. Our country must again believe that love is stronger than hate, that both mutual cooperation and personal convictions are important, and that a heart of grace is greater than a soul of hatred. If we do not return to our spiritual foundations, we face a grim future. Whether it is by expressing sympathy to our Jewish Compatriots and neighbors, or by speaking a word in public for a cooperative spirit, or by stepping up our efforts to honor those who serve to preserve our freedoms and liberties we can make a difference in this country. And we must. My thanks to you for allowing me this expression of concern and plea for action. George Kirby Reech: Past Southern District Vice- President General, officer in Louisiana State SAR and a veteran of World War II; Michael Christian: 28 year NSSAR Librarian, SAR Compatriot and a highly regarded help to many in our Genealogical Library; John Franklin Deem: veteran of 48 years as a Representative and Senator in the West Virginia House of Delegates, a man known as a friend to both parties, recipient of the Distinguished West Virginian Award, veteran of World War II; Phillip Bruce Carr, Sr.: Past Vice-President General for the South-Atlantic District of SAR and a National Trustee. I count it an honor to serve you, Rev. Dr. John C. Wakefield NSSAR Chaplain General jcwakefield@milligan.edu (home) (cell) 112 Barberry Road #41 Johnson City, TN I add summaries about four recent deaths among us. We and the Compatriots families have incurred great loss in this short amount of time. I have communicated with their families and I know that several of you have, too. Pray for their comfort and strength.

7 KS Liberty Tree Branch Update and Year End Push Compatriots, Please review your list of prospective members, check with your local DAR chapters for referrals and canvas your members for a year end push. Below is a national update on the acceptable membership application forms which go into effect on 1 November Thanks again for all you do. John Schatzel KSAR Genealogist The SAR embraces and has approved four membership application forms: MS/Word version; PDF version; SARApAid by Cox Software; and My Applications, the online application system. Links to the current updated version of each of these four forms is available from the SAR website by clicking on Revised versions of the four forms have been acceptable since they were first approved by the Trustees in March 2017 but outdated versions of these forms, in particular the MS Word, the PDF, and the SARApAid forms, continue to be received at Headquarters. The current version date for each form type is: MS Word version: adopted Feb 2017 SAR Application Form 2017 found on the bottom of the application form. PDF version: Rev. Mar 2017 found on the bottom of the application form. SARApAid by Cox Software: Appaid Ver Feb found on the bottom of the application form. My Applications (the online application system): This format does not have a revision date but any application printed after May 7, 2018 will automatically contain the required changes. Only application forms with these, or more recent revision dates, will be accepted as of October 31, While leeway is certainly due those whose applications were in process at the time we reach the deadline, we need for this deadline to be respected and we request those who assist with application process sponsors, genealogists, registrars, secretaries, and others to assist our applicants in using the right application form and in avoiding the disappointment of having their form returned because of use of the wrong form. Bob Fish, Chairman NSSAR Genealogy Committee Jim Faulkinbury, Genealogist General Now, the Trustees have set an effective date after which outdated versions of the forms cannot be used. At the 2018 NSSAR Fall Leadership Meeting, the Trustees approved October 31, 2018, as the effective date for use of only the current versions of these application forms. The new application forms have several important changes: removal of the spaces for listing of the applicant s children, a revision to the applicant s signed certification, and addition of a space for signature of the Genealogist General.

8 Brad Meltzer will Present his New Hardcover ~ The First Conspiracy: The Secret Plot to Kill George Washington EVENT OVERVIEW: Brad Meltzer, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of The Escape Artist, will Present his New Hardcover The First Conspiracy: The Secret Plot to Kill George Washington. This Event is Co-Presented by Rainy Day Books & Truman Library Institute. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Brad Meltzer, is the #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of The Escape Artist, The Inner Circle, and many other Bestselling Thrillers, as well as the "Ordinary People Change the World" Series. He is also the Host of the History Channel TV shows Brad Meltzer's Decoded and Brad Meltzer's Lost History, which he used to help find the missing 9/11 Flag that the firefighters raised at Ground Zero. ABOUT THE NEW BOOK: Taking place during the most critical period of our Nation's birth, The First Conspiracy tells a remarkable and previously untold piece of American history that not only reveals George Washington's character, but also illuminates the origins of America's counterintelligence movement that led to the modern day CIA. In 1776, an elite group of soldiers were handpicked to serve as George Washington's bodyguards. Washington trusted them; relied on them. But unbeknownst to Washington, some of them were part of a treasonous plan. In the months leading up to the Revolutionary War, these traitorous soldiers, along with the Governor of New York, William Tryon, and Mayor David Mathews, launched a deadly plot against the most important member of the military: George Washington himself. This is the story of the secret plot and how it was revealed. It is a story of leaders, liars, counterfeiters, and jailhouse confessors. It also shows just how hard the battle was for George Washington and how close America was to losing the Revolutionary War. In this historical page-turner, New York Times Bestselling Author Brad Meltzer teams up with American History Writer & Documentary Television Producer Josh Mensch to unravel the shocking true story behind what has previously been a footnote in the pages of history. Drawing on extensive research, Meltzer and Mensch capture in riveting detail how George Washington not only defeated the most powerful military force in the world, but also uncovered the secret plot against him in the tumultuous days leading up to July 4, DATE & TIME: Thursday, January 17, 2019, at 7:00 PM LOCATION: A Rainy Day Books Author Event at Unity Temple on The Plaza, Sanctuary, 707 W 47th Street, Kansas City, Missouri EVENT FORMAT: Brad Meltzer will Present his New Hardcover The First Conspiracy: The Secret Plot to Kill George Washington and answer audience questions. 9 9 Dispatches from the Western Front From the Prairie Chapters Bennington, Ft. Hays and Sons of the Plains Why does the SAR do Youth Contests? Each year we hear the same old thing. They don t teach history in the schools anymore, my experience is that is not true. The issue is every time you turn around someone thinks they know better than anyone else how our schools should be run, how students should be taught, and on and on. We ve all heard the excuses for the lack of teaching of our founding documents etc. When I reflect back to when I attended school, I do not remember hardly anything about the class we were required to take commonly referred to as Constitution except that it was taught by the basketball coach and the room was so packed with students that we had to go in single file to reach our seats. It was not that he did not know his stuff, but to juniors in high school it was not really relevant to us at the time with Vietnam and protests going on, riots in Watts and Detroit, and the news actually being reported. So what is our roll today as we embark on first finding a way into the classroom and then what do we do when we get there? We are not there to teach. We are there to inspire kids to learn. We are there to inspire them to work outside of the classroom on a project wherein they will learn about a subject, a concept, a person or whatever the contest revolves around. As an example: when a student is doing a poster on a person it is imperative in my mind that the one thing most important to learn from that poster is the power of one. Just what was the result of that one person s actions? Let them know that each and every one of them can have a positive impact in the classroom, at home, in the community and in the world. History repeats itself because of individuals and whether it is a positive or negative impact is up to each and every individual. We are there to inspire students to continue to learn our history on their own outside of the classroom when we and their teachers are gone. There is not enough time in the day to teach all of the fine points of what happened during the American Revolution but time after time men and women made a difference because they wanted to. If we create interest in one or two events, people, places or things that occurred as a result of those pieces of history and that interest inspires the students to delve further, then, we have been successful. If we make an impact on young people to believe that they can make a difference just like Sam Adams, Nathan Hale, Sybil Ludington, or Francis Marion then we have impacted the lives of those young people. We have seen how excited and how impressed compatriots have become because of the quality of work entrants have submitted as they participated in our contests. Sadly, too few students have joined in and that is on us. The kids are out there, they just need someone to get them fired up. - Bobbie Hulse, Kansas VP bobbiesar2@att.net
