2 Luncheon: Saints Avenue Cafe', Boone, IA - December 1, 2018 A small but determined group met for our December luncheon. Attending were Carol & John Heckman, Candy & David Jones, Pat Riemenschneider & Mark Shearer; and Ann & Fred Marcalus. The weather was threatening with freezing rain and snow which prevented many from attending. As usual a large selection of delicious entrées, salads and desserts were available - everyone enjoyed the quality and variety. Ann & Fred reported on the American Revolution in the North Caravan they had just returned from and shared the drivers manual with the group. By two o clock the weather had cleared a little bit and everyone departed for home. We are all looking forward to meeting again at the February 2, 2019 luncheon: Hosts will be Scott & Jodi Jensen (will be held same location - See below under Dates to Remember)

3 Revolutionary War Caravan 2018 Fred & Ann Marcalus Whether you are interested in the Revolutionary War, or would just like to know more about the founding of our Nation, the Revolutionary War Caravan is something to consider! Our tour started near Boston with 2 bus trips where we saw various sites and re-enactments of The Boston Massacre (1770) and the Boston Tea Party (1773). We visited Bunker Hill, USS Constitution, Paul Revere s House, Old North Church where patriots knew it was, One if by Land and Two if by Sea (April 18, 1775). Paul Revere and fellow Colonialist, William Dawes, in the late hours of April 18, 1775 and early hours of April 19, 1775, rode by horseback to alert their countrymen that the British were ordered to attack colonialists at Concord and Lexington in order to confiscate Paul Revere s House arms and supplies they believed were stored at Concord and Lexington. Colonialist Militia had moved the supplies to other hiding places before the British arrived. Farmers and Militiamen awaited the British at Lexington and Concord. The Colonialists then with knowledge of the territory attacked the British and pursued them all the way back to Boston. April 19, 1775, is considered to be the beginning date of The American Revolution. We also visited the Militiaman National Park during this stop. The Revolutionary Monument The next stop was Verona, New York where lesser known but, still important battles were fought at Fort Stanwix and Oriskany. It was here that 4 Native American Tribes, the Mohawks, Senecas, Cayugas and Onondagas sided with the British while the Oneidas fought with the Patriots. The Lake George campground was the next stop. The capture of Fort Ticonderoga, NY with Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold in command gave the Patriots access to numerous British Cannons which Henry Knox and his soldiers heroically dragged through the snow in the winter of 1775 to Dorchester Heights, MA where they were used in the siege of Boston in the spring of We also visited Saratoga National Park and Bennington Battlefield. At Plattekill, NY, the next stop, we took a bus trip to New York City, to US Military Academy, West Point, NY and to Fort Lee, in New Jersey. In July of 1776 the British landed 32,000 troops on Staten Island, NY. Over the course of the next 5 months the British chased Washington s army out of New York and across New Jersey. The stop at the US Military Academy at West Point reminded us that it was here that Benedict Arnold planned to turn over plans of the West Point Fort to the British. That plan made Benedict Arnold one of America s most infamous traitors. At Fort Lee, NJ, Washington s army abandons the Fort while fleeing New Jersey in the fall of Today a dramatic view of the George Washington Bridge can be seen from this site.

4 Stop five is at Freehold NJ. Here we visited the battlefields that reversed a year s worth of defeats suffered by the Continental Army in On Christmas night, 1776, Washington s rag-tag army crossed the Delaware River in a blizzard, and then defeated the Hessians (Germans who were fighting for the British) at Trenton, NJ. The Continental Army followed that up with victories at Princeton, NJ, and at Monmouth, NJ, before retreating to Valley Forge for the winter. At Coatesville, PA, we enjoyed two bus trips to Philadelphia. It was here at Carpenters Hall in the fall of 1774 that delegates from each of the 13 colonies met as the First Continental Congress. They were tasked with responding to King George III s actions toward the colonies. King George III no longer allowed each colony to govern over them. This action placed the King s representatives in charge of all matters affecting the colonies and prompted much additional soulsearching by the Colonialists regarding continuing to remain subjects of the King. We toured Independence Hall, the site of the second Continental Congress and where the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776 and the new Museum of the American Carpenters Hall Revolution during this stop. From Coatesville, PA we visited Valley Forge, Longwoods Gardens, and Brandywine Battlefield. The final stop was at the RV park located inside Fort Belvoir, Alexandria VA. A visit to Mount Vernon George Washington s family estate and to National Library for the Study of George Washington concluded the caravan.
