Membership is November to November. ******** If your not a paid member, this will be your last newsletter, please renew today**** As snowmobilers we all dream of the big storms, dumping three, four feet of that famous Utah powder. It can really be a blast carving around in open meadows, hitting some small hills and having all that fluff absorb your landings. How sweeeet those days are! Powder coming over your hood, filling your helmet and goggles with the white stuff. And oh yeah all that getting stuck; NOW there s a little cardio work out for you. The worst one s are when you get stuck on the flat and your riding clean up, and your group is just going out of sight, you know they will be back to get you, but is that in 5 minutes or 30 minutes? Don t worry they will be Back, Sometime. We truly do enjoy one of the greatest sports on Earth. There seems to be a great camaraderie among snowmobilers, when you tell them about your blue sky, new powder day ride they all grin from ear to ear and know exactly what kind of day you have had. They just wished they could have been there with you. At our opening social we rounded up some old pictures from the 60 s, 70 s and 80 s and put into our yearly slide show, it was a lot of fun to see some of the old vintage sleds. Those short tracks, metal cleats, and oh yea a whopping 48 horsepower under the hoods, Ill bet they really dreaded those three foot powder days. But you know they all seemed to have those exact same smiles on there faces as we have today, and I m going to guess they had that same camaraderie as we have today. What A Great Sport. Some of the things we wish for can be our own worst enemy. Those three & four feet storms are fun but they also bring on some Extreme Avalanche dangers. Our recent Christmas Eve tragedy up Providence is certainly proof of that. What a terribly tragic day for the Jorgensen s and the Johnson s Our Deepest Sympathy goes out to both families These two young men Eric Jorgensen and Jesse Johnson where both excellent riders, they where as prepared as you can be, both where wearing beacons, both riding great new sleds, probably in as good of shape as you can be in. But still Tragedy Struck. We are extremely lucky that there wasn t two other s caught in the same avalanche. I have also thought about the times I have been in the same location as these men and there s been fifteen or twenty guys sitting at the base of the hill. It truly could have been a catastrophic day. We hope we can all use these events to become better prepared snowmobilers. We need to practice using our beacons, we need to make sure we have probes and shovels. We could probably all use some First Aid refreshers. We are currently working on putting together a workshop in late January or early February to help educate all of us in these areas. Lets all enjoy this beautiful winter wonderland we live in and Enjoy it Safely. Kelly Leishman

The Top of Utah Snowmobile Association would like to recognize different individuals/families/groups each year for their efforts and involvement in our community/sport during the year. These efforts are not necessarily tied to just snowmobiling. If you have some one that you would like to nominate as the Top of Utah Snowmobiler/family/oldduffer of the year please contact either Kerry or Kelly. The awards would be given at our annual fall social. For example Kerry Hendrickson could be recognized as the (The Top of Utah best looking Snowmobiler of ) if only someone would nominate him.

3 If you haven t paid your membership dues yet, its that time again. This is the easiest way to keep your self involved in this great sport. Your paid membership helps to keep your great sledding areas open by giving you a voice in the constant battle to keep our backcountry open, it pays for your membership in the Utah Snowmobile Association, you ll receive great newsletters keeping you informed of all the latest happenings, and get your club discount card. The $35 is by far the best investment in your sleds that you can make. Please include your name, address, phone and , so we can keep our records current. 4 UDOT has built a new turn lane and acceleration lane at the Beaver Mountain turn off, this will eliminate most of the parking in the lower parking lot. The upper lot has been enlarged and we hope to have some signs up this winter to help park more efficiently. This is State Trust Lands property (SITLA), which includes both parking lots and Beaver Mountain. Utah parks pays rent and pays to maintain the lot during the winter months. Utah State Parks and Recreation offers a Know Before You Go! Snowmobile education courses. Students must pre-register for this class and will be notified of the course time upon registering. Children age 8 to 16 are required by state law to take a safety class prior to operating snowmobiles on public lands or trails. To pre-register call Only $10

6 Top of Utah Snowmobile Association (TOUSA) is a Nonprofit Organization set up to educate snowmobilers on being responsible winter time users, Plan out fun rides for all riding abilities, set up fundraisers, plan and execute service projects, and to be the VOICE OF THE SNOWMOBILERS. To this point there have been literally thousands of hours spent on your behalf fighting to keep our backcountry open.
