Lee Herberg A recent issue of Living Lutheran, the monthly magazine of the ELCA featured an article entitled Ventures in Growing Stewards for congregations. In doing some additional reading and ingathering of material for our own stewardship education, I came upon some material from Rev. Scott Jacob, who serves as pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Two Harbors, MN, a logging and mining community in the Iron Range of that state. His insight comes under the theme of How Much is Enough? His primary emphasis is this: Is Faithful Stewardship Possible in a Consumer Culture? As Pastor Scott travels around his synod doing stewardship education, he asks his participants at his workshop to take out five things: Associate Pastor Rev. Christina Martin Keys - symbolizing stuff that needs protection. Checkbook - what do you spend your money on? Wallet (or purse) - tools for consuming and or for over consuming. After his participants lay these items out on the table, Pastor Scott asks them to look at them and consider 4 questions: 1. Which of these 5 do I struggle with the most? The least? 2. Which of these provides me with the greatest satisfaction? 3. Which of these does the most damage to my faithfulness? 4. Which of these am I the most reluctant to change in my life? Thanksgiving to you and your family from Financial Administration Jennifer Scheet First Lutheran Is A Mission Partner with Camp of the Cross Ministries After the participants answer these questions from their own perspective, he asks - Are these tools that we control and help us live out our lives as disciples? Are these tools that control our lives and keep us from living out our faith? As those questions are pondered, Pastor Scott lifts up a quote from Martin Luther way back in the 1500 s Possessions are not given that we may rely on them or glory in them - but that we may use and enjoy them and share them with others. Our possessions should be in our hands, not our hearts. As Pastor Scott closes his sessions he leaves his participants with some closing points to ponder: 1. At what point did we move from holding our possessions to our possessions holding us? 2. How do we move our possessions out of our hearts and back into our hands? 3. How do we help others see this reality and move their possessions as well? I invite all of you to ponder these questions as well as we struggle with the call to be faithful stewards in a consumer culture. First Lutheran Staff! November is traditionally the month when we offer up to Christ our commitment of time, talent and treasure to be the hands and feet of Christ in the upcoming year. Our Ingathering Services for our commitment for 2019 will be on Wednesday, November 14th at 6:00 P.M. and Sunday, November 18th at 8:30 A.M. and 10:45 A.M. Be sure to set your clocks back 1 hour before you go to bed on Saturday, November 3rd. November 2018 A State Tax Credit for Endowment Gifts is available for individuals if they make a gift to a qualified ND endowment (First Lutheran Church Mission Endowment Fund is a qualified Fund.). Individuals may receive a state tax credit for a contribution of $5,000 or more (lump sum or aggregate in one year) to a qualified ND endowment. The tax credit is 40% of the chartable deduction allowed by the IRS up to a maximum credit of $10,000 per year per taxpayer or $20,000 per year per couple filing jointly. Effective for taxable years starting in Businesses (C corporations, S corporations, estates, limited liability companies, trusts, and financial institutions) that pay state income tax may receive a 40% credit up to a maximum credit of $10,000 for contributions to a qualified ND endowment. Effective for taxable years starting in 2007, except for financial institutions effective in Please consult your own attorney, accountant or financial advisor for advise on your situation. For other ways to contribute, please refer to the Leave a Legacy brochure located in the Narthex and complete the Information Request Form located in the brochure. Also, find helpful information provided by the First Lutheran Mission Endowment Committee in the weekly bulletins and monthly newsletters. Renovation account paid out so far = $394, There is a contingency balance left in the mechanical budget of $10, Unfinished Business *Sanctuary Ceiling Fans: The current ones will be monitored and will be accessed after the improvements are completed and review of budget at that time. *Education/Youth Director Staff Position: We will continue to advertise the position. *Luther Seminary/Lily Endowment Fund: Pastor Lee and Pastor Chris attended the retreat and workshop in Medora, more information will be made available next month. *Sanctuary Choir Director/Worship Coordinator Position(s): Search continues *Review of Bidding Process: Still in progress, team will meet to review the process. New Business Custodial Concerns: The lack of accountability and completion of job tasks has taken been taking a toll on the church and additional staff. A review of the responsibilities will be stated and a request to be more present will be requested at this time.
