NRSV On Thursday, August 16th, we lost the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin to the bonds of heaven. I was always a big Aretha fan, as rhythm and blues is one of my favorite genres of music, and no one since Ella Fitzgerald could phrase like Aretha. Besides her signature songs from the 1960 s, I also really liked her later work like Freeway of Love, Who s Zoomin Who? and I Dreamed a Dream, her cover of that song from Les Miserables. One of her lesser chart successes is a favorite of mine, Ever Changing Times from This duet with Michael McDonald includes the lyric: I see, that clock upon the wall, well it don't bother me at all It's a ever changing time It is an ever changing time. Since May, our lower level has been largely unusable with the much needed HVAC, restroom and window projects. I can t believe the changes underway in this part of our facility...and the changes in technology since the boiler was installed in 1955 when the church was under construction. It is an ever changing time. In July, we received a letter of resignation from Lynn Boehm, our contemporary service Worship Coordinator and Shawn Boehm, our Sanctuary Choir Director. They have served in these positions for 15 years and now would like time to be able to travel to see their adult children and not be tied down to a schedule. They are phenomenal musicians and it will be very difficult for us to find their talent that they brought to bear for their respective callings. We must also thank all of the faithful, talented Praise Team members and Sanctuary Choir members for their time commitment with the Boehm s at the helm. Please join us in thanking them on Sunday, September 23rd at 9:30 A.M. in the Fellowship Hall. It is an ever changing time. We can t change the clock upon the wall...well I guess we play with time a bit in the spring and fall with DST, but we can t stop time from moving forward. Amid all the changes that happen in life, remember Hebrews 13:8, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Christ s love for us remains the same, his gifts to us remain the same, regardless of that clock upon the wall. Until next time, Pastor Lee

2 PAGE 2 FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH September 2018 Remember starting September 9 th we will resume our regular Sunday service schedule, 8:30 (Traditional) & 10:45 (Contemporary) A.M. First Lutheran s Lunch at First (LAF) program feeds about 400 of our Mandan High School students each week during the school year! It s a ministry that has grown immensely over the past few years and promises to grow into the future. It s great to witness God working through our volunteers as they serve and our young people as they are served all disciples of Jesus Christ! As the numbers of young people served has grown, naturally so has the budget for LAF. It costs about $400 a week to feed these young people a cost of about $.95 cents per meal per student a real bargain!! So, we are asking individuals, families, businesses and corporations for some financial assistance as we move into the Fall. If you, your family or business would like to sponsor a LAF meal it would go a long way toward funding LAF. Maybe a group of families would like to sponsor a meal and help serve it!! Whatever the case let us know and thank you in advance for your contribution toward bringing Jesus command, Feed my sheep to our high school students. ATTENTION ALL QUILTERS: Quilting is starting up again!! September 17 th & 18 th and September 24 th & 25 th from 9:00 A.M.-4:00 P.M. You don t need any experience, just come and have fun. Bring a sack lunch. Many children in Mandan begin school each year without supplies. During the next few months, please check the school supply aisles and consider making a purchase for those less fortunate right here in Mandan. Supplies needed are 24 box crayons, pencils, erasers, glue, glue sticks, rulers, scissors, back packs, folders and regular or college ruled notebooks. Any supplies received will be equally distributed among the 6 Mandan elementary schools. The schools last year were very appreciative of all the supplies that were given to them! There will be a SPECIAL BOX for these items in the narthex; please drop your donations in there. Thank you for your kindness! Church Picnic: We will have a picnic at the Eagles Park in Mandan th St NE, on Sunday, September 9 th following the 10:45 service. All church families are invited. Hamburgers and hotdogs will be provided. Please join us for worship, food & fun! Last names starting with A through M bring a SALAD & N through Z bring a DESSERT. If you have any musical gifts that you have been keeping under wraps, please let us know as we will be restructuring our worship services for Fall. Ideally, we would like to have more individuals involved in the contemporary worship service, so that we can be more flexible for our musician s schedules. Thank you! We will plan out our fundraisers and the youth will decide where we are going during this meeting. The Mission Trip is open to all youth in grades 8-12 th. You ve heard it before: Music has the power to move people. When that music is paired with powerful truth, their hearts and souls respond. The Kiev Symphony Orchestra and Chorus (KSOC) was founded and began performing sacred masterpieces of classical music in These pieces including Handel s Messiah, Brahms Requiem, and Mendelssohn's Elijah were banned under Communist rule. As the Iron Curtain lifted and this music became known to Ukrainian musicians, they described it as an explosion of light. These time-honored compositions powerfully communicate texts that come directly from Scripture, declaring God's glory to the nations. Music Mission Kiev uses sacred music to share the gospel with a country that lived under years of spiritual suppression. This message has flourished into a dynamic evangelistic ministry that serves people in Kyiv and reaches beyond the borders of Ukraine to other countries in the former Soviet Union. MMK has ministries for Musician discipleship, they present Friendship- Evangelism concerts, they are involved in Church Planting and Discipleship, and they serve children through Bible and Music ministries. You can experience the outstanding music of the KSOC and learn about the evangelistic ministries of Music Mission Kiev. 5 PAGE 8 FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH SEPTEMBER 2018 Outstanding Senior Awards Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center The Foundation at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center (MSLCC) is hosting a new community event that you will not want to miss! The Outstanding Senior Awards will be held at our newly purchased north property on October 11, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. The event is being held to honor the contributions of those 65 and older in our community and recognize their accomplishments. Please consider submitting a nomination for these awards and attending this unique event! Nomination forms and tickets are available at mslcc.com/outstandingsenior or by calling Jessica Gilbertson at There are also Nomination forms in the narthex. Nomination forms are due September 12 th, Nominees for the awards must be 65 or older and reside in the Bismarck/Mandan Area or have made an impact in the area. The included categories in this year s awards are Community Involvement, Faith and Professional Involvement. They were approved without change at the church council meeting on August 16th oz. bag tater tots 1 can cream of chicken soup 4 oz. sour cream 1 Vidalia onion 1/2 stick butter 1 rotisserie chicken ~ shredded 8 oz. shredded cheddar cheese Tater Tot Chicken Hot dish Spray a 9 x 13 pan. Bake a single layer of Tater Tots as directed on bag. (Season tater tots with Lawry s Season Salt). Meanwhile, sautee onion in butter until translucent. Mix cream of chicken soup and sour cream together and add shredded chicken & onions. Pour the chicken mixture over the tater tots. Top with cheese and bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees. If you go to the ER at the hospital and get admitted PLEASE call the church and let us know if you want a Pastor to visit. We do not get your name from the hospital list if you are admitted through the ER. The 2018 Bismarck-Mandan CROPWALK for Hunger will be on Sunday, October 14 th. We gather at the Capitol Steps with registration beginning at 12:30 and the walk beginning at 1:30. The first CROPWALK ever was held here in 1969 as youth and others walked to end hunger! Now almost 50 years later, we continue this important walk realizing that many people in our community, country and world continue to suffer the hardships of hunger. We walk because they must walk for their water, food and shelter! Walkers can walk a distance comfortable for them. Those walkers with donations of $100 or more will receive a CROPWALK T shirt. 25% of the money raised in the CROPWALK benefits Aid, Inc., Abused Adult Resource Center, Bismarck Emergency Food Pantry, and Ruth Meiers Hospitality House. Please join us as we gather and walk together to benefit Church World Service in their important work throughout the world!
