1 FIRST LUTHERAN CHURC H 408 Ninth Street NW Mandan, ND Phone: Fax: jackie@firstlutheranofmandan.org First Lutheran Church May Newsletter Building Faith and Transforming Lives in Christ. We re on the web! May 2014 First Lutheran Staff Administrative Pastor Rev. Lee Herberg Associate Pastor Rev. Jack Carlson Associate Pastor Rev. Christina Martin Administrative Assistant & Coordinator of Lay Ministries Jackie Schulz (o) (h) Custodians Ron & Mavis Watson Financial Administration Jennifer Scheet First Lutheran Is A Mission Partner with Camp of the Cross Ministries Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. Acts 9:1-2 NRSV As we enter a new season of the church year, the season of Easter, a season of 50 days, we might give pause and look back at the just completed season of Lent, a season of 40 days. The season of Lent and the season of Easter could not be more different however, as people we often behave the same way regardless of season. As Saul (whom we know better as Paul) was planning to enter Damascus, his plans were all made, his agenda in place. He was going to make things come out the way he wanted them to. No surprises were anticipated. He could be as ruthless and as heartless as he pleased. He had authority from the high priest, after all. He would just do what he had planned to do, and then move on to his next agenda item. The season of Lent may be like that. We ve been this way before; we know what to expect. We probably know how much time we will invest in it. Ash Wednesday will be gone with Thursday s shower. Will that 40 day season of Lent have made a difference? Maybe part of the answer depends on what we confront on the journey...or (Who) confronts us. We are now in a new season celebrating life in the resurrected Christ. In Easter, life is given a new direction. Saul became Paul. The same zealousness that Saul had in eradicating Christianity became a new passion for spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. Saul s agenda was changed...he was moved from death to life. Will we act differently? How will we spend these next seven weeks, these 50 days? Consult the calendar, get on with the routine, cross things off as they occur? After all, this is a busy time of year, what with school winding down, outside activities picking up, graduations on the horizon, etc. In this new season of life, we tend to carry forward the same old worries, the same old attitudes, the same old grudges. Saul didn t know what the Lord had in store for him right around the next bend. Neither do we. Perhaps because life is often routine and able to be planned, we take for granted that things are going to work out the way we anticipate. Maybe this Easter season, we will let ourselves be surprised. God is always calling us to new adventures, new paths, new ways of seeing God s world. Sometimes breaks in the routines of life are good...they are opportunities to plant some new seeds, some new ways of celebrating the life we share together in Christ. Have a blessed Easter season...all year long! Until next time, Pastor Lee
