On August 14th, the Well of Mercy, a Fr. Michael J. McGivney Center of Hope and healing opened its doors to single pregnant women who choose life. Five mothers, three of which will give birth in the next 3 weeks, now have a home. We are a much needed extension of the Pregnancy Assistance Centers by providing transitional housing. The Chicago center is the first of six Fr. Michael J. McGivney Centers of Hope and Healing to be established. Our goal is to open a center in each of the six dioceses in the State of Illinois. The Center is named after the founder of the Knights of Columbus, the Venerable Fr. Michael J. McGivney. On Sunday, September 23rd, there will be an open house to visit the new home. It is located at 6339 N. Fairfield Ave., Chicago. We have much to do to clean and renovate the facility and you may decide, after visiting, that you want to help us sometime. Your time and talents are essential in the support of this mission. The Holy Spirit may tap you on the shoulder and you may get involved and share in the joy of this new Catholic initiative. Visit the website: Theresa Pietruszynski, President #1704 NEWTON LADIES AUXILIARY Letter from Your New President Hello Ladies. My name is Ellen Einhorn. You probably know my husband (of 32 years) Chuck Einhorn or one of my three children, Jacob, Ethan or Meghann. And you may have seen me singing in the choir or lecturing at my church but you still don t know me. I was not locally grown though I have lived here for more years than I have lived in my tiny home town of 300 people. I have no sisters (regrettably) and 4 brothers who made me what I am today...a follower. I have never been nor planned to be a leader of anything. President was never a title I strove to achieve. But here I am. I am not-nor ever been popular. I will be the first to admit that I am probably not the best person for the position but I was (eventually) willing. I am finding out that I have a priceless support group in my fellow officers willing and able to get me through this year as I hope you will too. I could not ask for more. Why do I confess all this?? Well, here it is. I know that most of you are much like me and it isn t easy but you need to do the same...get more involved! You need to reach deep inside yourselves and step outside your comfort zone. As members of the 1704 Newton Ladies Auxiliary we are making a statement...which is We Care. We care for something beyond ourselves.we care for others. But caring is not enough. We have to October, 2012 show that we care and that requires action on our parts. The first action should be to attend meetings...right? Show you care. See you there. Say a prayer for all those touched by the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado. May God bring peace and comfort to all in need. Ellen Einhorn, President #4977 HOLY GHOST PALATINE Knights of Columbus Holy Ghost Ladies Auxiliary #4977 marched with the Knights in the Palatine July 4 th parade this summer. The Knights original banner had been used in this parade for many years, but a few years ago it was lost and no one knew where it had been
2 VOLUME 4, ISSUE 4 PAGE 2 stored. Since I made our Auxiliary banner, the Knights needed one, too. For them to go without a banner just did not seem right so I made another banner that was similar to the former one. Making their banner and a carrying case cost $ compared to buying it for $ Knights of Columbus Holy Ghost Ladies Auxiliary #4977 sold the last of 2,707 cookbooks, Bless Us O Lord. In June 2009, we discussed the idea of selling a cookbook to raise money for charity and started collecting recipes in November, 2009 with little knowledge of sales and marketing and only shear determination to compile the best cookbook ever. Little did we know what was ahead of us. As we started collecting recipes in eight catagories, we realized we had to set a number of deadlines in order for the recipes to be submitted to us on a continuous basis. We did not want all of the 650 recipes to be submitted a week before the final deadline. We started with 10 typists and editors or recipes and soon found ourselves with 8 ladies doing this monumental job. I would recommend for anyone entering this task to have at least typists/editors and workers.no less. We got advertisers and sponsors for our book, did the publicity on its sale, distributed them to places in the community where they were sold (beauty shops, restaurants, etc.), set up farmer s markets and arts and craft show dates, lined up workers at these events, and did a lot of behind-the-scene work. All in all, we had dozens of ideas for its sale with only a portion of those ideas coming to fruition. The Knights were helpful with the sale of our cookbook by taking them to their place of business, and some of them sold as many as 2-3 boxes for us (18/box). We used creative ways to sell our cookbook by promoting them as affordable $15.00 gifts for bridal showers and other holiday gift ideas. We donated some books to be sold in gift shops of charitable places that we, otherwise, would have given a cash donation. My suggestion to any auxiliary contemplating the idea of compiling a cookbook, is to follow your dream and do it. However, do not expect sales to be the same as 20 years ago. Create your own special cookbook for sale in your church only and start out with ordering books to gauge how sales will go. You can always order more. I am more than thankful for the perseverance of the ladies in our auxiliary who made our dream possible. Barbara Simeo Past President Holy Ghost #4977 #5573 GOOD SHEPHERD PLAINFIELD Our fraternal year ended with installation of officers by Knights of Columbus District Deputy Fred Kunst and Rev. David Medow pastor of St. Mary Immaculate Parish-Plainfield. After the ceremony, we shared a dinner with the Knights and presented checks to several organizations to further their causes. The bulk of our donations went to the parish school and Religious Education programs as well as our parish Girl Scouts troops. We believe that to build the Church of tomorrow and to help young adults make the right choices in life we must support the children of today. We have planned a very busy and enjoyable year starting with a Get Reacquainted meeting on September 13. Beginning with prayer and ending with trivia questions and prizes the evening looks to be enjoyable for our members. A tuition grant to St. Mary Immaculate School or Religious Education program for children or grandchildren of eligible members of the auxiliary will also be awarded in September. Many of our members will be assisting the Knights with the I.D. drive in September. This is always an enjoyable and fulfilling endeavor. We hope to build our membership in October with information in our parish bulletin along with an invitation to the meeting. Since October is the month of the rosary, we will honor Our Blessed Mother with a special program on the rosary. We will also create Trick or Treat bags for needy children in the area. Looking forward to November we will remember our members and friends who have left us to be with Our Lord with a special memorial service. The meeting will continue with testing our knowledge of the saints-of course prizes will be awarded to those in the know! We do not hold a regular meeting in December, but will celebrate at a Christmas Party along with the Knights at Giovan s Restaurant in Crest Hill. The Good Shepherd members would like to wish all of our sisters a heartfelt Thanksgiving and a glorious Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We also invite everyone to visit at any our meetings held at 7:00 PM on the 2 nd. Thursday of each month at S. Route 59, Plainfield, IL Grace M. Blaszak President

The installation was conducted by Knights of Columbus District Deputy Kirk Donald, with the assistance of Worthy Grand Knight Larry Scalise. The Auxiliary would like to thank Kirk and Larry, as well as other members of the council, for attending and helping to make the event even more special. The Ladies Auxiliary was established at St. John the Baptist Parish in 1987 and since then it has played a vital, active role in supporting the Knights of Columbus, St. John the Baptist Parish, and those in need, in and around the Johnsburg community. The Ladies Auxiliary would like to thank the parishioners of St. John s for their support and generosity which made all of these good works possible. We would also like to extend a special thanks to the Knights of Columbus for their support and encouragement.
