Our year saw younger Brothers joining our Council, raising the hopes of new thoughts, new excitement and commitment to our Ministries and Charitable works. In complete opposition to that, we had 5 Brothers decide to leave our Council; could that have been from apathy, personal situations or possibly from disenchantment for what we are doing and/or how we are doing it? I have thought about that and always remember The Man in the Mirror - I need to take stock of myself and my ability to lead and engage our members. I need to lead by example and not by mandate. Please tell me your thoughts and opinions as I try to grow into the Grand Knight position. It is an ongoing challenge and one I accepted when I was elected Grand Knight. Our Council continues to do fantastic charitable work from year to year and Fundraiser to Fundraiser. The one area that needs improving is that we need to get those younger Brothers & their Families active and involved. By doing this we will continue the great lineage that has been established by our older Brothers and those that have passed away. It has been said many times, we rely on the same Brothers and their Spouses/Families to do everything. Let s figure out a way to get at least 20 more Brothers involved and active. Send me some of your idea s - we ll bring those up for discussion during our Business Meeting. I am anxious to see what transpires with our Council since we are now in Region 101 and obviously we have Council #4242 in the region with us. DGK Ken Wyland and I have discussed going to an upcoming Business Meeting for #4242 in order to gauge the temperature of what they feel is coming. I don t know Father Kevin so I will grow to know him just as you will (some of you may already know him). I pray that he is fair and unbiased in terms of our Parish, it s people and in particular our Council. As discussed, the KoC Council s are an independent entity not part of the Church or run by the Parish. So we have the right to stay independent from # but will we be given that opportunity? So hopefully you will take these random thoughts of mine and create a solution or two that will help us to grow, maintain our course and stay vibrant and active for years to come. Don t be afraid to speak up and offer your suggestions, none of us has all of the answers. We are stronger as a group. VIVAT JESUS, Duane Cardamone, Grand Knight Fraternity Patriotism MISSSION STATEMENT Our Lady of Joy Parish, Knights of Columbus Council #12219, is a brotherhood of Catholic gentlemen. The Council provides an opportunity for fellowship with men who hold the same beliefs, values and priorities in life and in God. We are dedicated to the support of our brothers, their families, our parish, the community, our country and the Catholic Faith. Our charitable work, worship and devotion are unified as we focus on the four principles of our Order; Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism.

2 FROM THE CHAPLAIN Humility and Obedience are 2 virtues that are connected. It is in the act of humility that we are obedient. For instance, Though He was in the form of God, Jesus did not deem equality with God something to be grasped (at), but rather He emptied Himself, and took the form of a slave, being born of likeness of man. He humbled Himself becoming obedient to death, even death on the cross. Because of this God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name that is above every other name, so at the name of JESUS, every knee must bend, in the heavens and on the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the FATHER, (Phil. 2: 6-11). This quote from the Letter of St. Paul to the Philippians tells us that Jesus Himself was already God in Heaven (in the form of God). But He did not deem (make it important) that He grasp (at), or hold onto that glory by appearing to be equal with God, in all GLORY, but rather He emptied Himself (of the divine beauty and glory and brightness) that one would recognize ONE as BEING God, but instead became a human being, in the form of a slave (as one who works for others, as we do in serving God and others in this world). So Jesus emptied Himself, in HUMILITY, of the glory due to God, to become a human being. He accepted IN OBEDIENCE TO THE FATHER, even obedience to death, death on the cross. This was the divine plan that God the Father send the Son, to REDEEM mankind by offering up the only perfect sacrifice to the Father, His only Son, and God Himself in the Second person of the Blessed Trinity Jesus the Son). Because Jesus was always obedient to the Father (even in the Garden of Gethsemane, He prayed to the Father, Father if this cup can pass away from Me let it be done, but not My will but Your will be done.), the Father exalted His Son to the Glory due Him, and bestowed upon Him the NAME above every other name (the Name of Jesus, the Son of God), so that at the Name of Jesus, every knee must bend (as we genuflect and bow our heads) and every tongue profess (our CREED of Life I BELIEVE) that JESUS CHRIST IS LORD (accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior). Wow, Jesus humility, emptying of self, was carried out in His obedience to the will of the Father. We too are given so many gifts, and so many graces, and we too are invited to empty ourselves of I need this, for myself alone, but instead we should use things and talents for the Glory of God the Father, as Our Lord has done for us. And we will show OBEDIENCE, by loving one another as the Lord has called us to do. So as we enter August, let us all empty ourselves of ME ONLY attitudes, and take on the likeness of God, by being holy, loving and giving as Jesus the Son of God has shown us to do. 4 SECOND SUCCESSFUL TOOTSIE ROLL DRIVE Our 2 ND Tootsie Roll Drive of the 2018 campaign occurred on Saturday, June 30. The following Brothers volunteered to brave the heat and humidity to collect donations in front of Shop-N-Save on Rt. 286: Jeff McCarrick, Frank Popies, Ed Novosel, Chris Allman, Rich Wegrzyn, Duane Cardamone, Jim Cummings, and Carl Vitalbo. We collected a total of $623, bringing our total for 2018 to $1,303. We are well on our way toward achieving our goal of $2,500 for this years campaign. This is due to the dedication & cooperative spirit of the Brothers who volunteer their time and energy for a worthy cause. All proceeds benefit St. Anthony School for Exceptional Children and the McGuire Home. ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY Chairman Frank Papciak conducted the 2 nd Adopt-A-Highway Cleanup of the 2018 season on Saturday, July 14. The Pre-Job Brief opened with a prayer for our Chaplain Father Al. A review was provided on safety and hazards along with a general overview of our mission to cleanup the highway. Our crew split up into groups so that we can divide and conquer our assignment. A special thank you to all Volunteers pictured below: Rob Cecchetti, Frank Papciak, Duane Cardamone, Bob Olesak, Ed Novosel, Brian Caughey, Ken Saybel and Jim Kelly. Future Adopt-A-Highway Collections are scheduled for Saturday, 09/08/18 and Friday, 11/09/18. BLOOD DRIVE Our Council sponsored a Blood Drive on Sunday, July 22 nd. Chairman Bob Parker hoped that our summer blood drive would be as successful as our drive in January when we had 55 donors. There weren t as many, primarily due to the number of possible donors who were on vacation. Either they weren t home during our contact period or they were away on the actual donation date. My initial report to the Central Blood Bank was that we were going to be way below January and not to expect a good turn-out. At that time we only had nine donors committed. Through the efforts of our fantastic group of fellow Knights, advertising, word of mouth, etc. we were able to surpass our goal of 35 for a total of 41 (according to the Central Blood Bank records). With last-minute walk-ins there may have been more. Chairman Bob Parker thanks all the Knights and, in one case, the wife of Brother Don Strong (Sandy Strong) for all of their help including calling prior donors, after-mass sign-up and canteen attendants (I am not going to list the names of the volunteers in case I miss someone). To the volunteers: Just know that for each pint of blood donated there are three people who have benefitted from that donation. So you have helped over 120 people live better lives. I thank you, the patients thank you, and God thanks you. Susan Kear feeling really good after donating blood. Joe Dello Stritto, with Susan, was not able to give but feeling good because he tried.

5 The annual Parish Festival is coming up August 10-11, & once again the Knights are manning the Funnel Cake Booth and, new this year, the Chuck-A-Luck Wheel. As always, volunteers are needed to man both booths for two shifts each night. While all of the brothers work hard each night, we also have a lot of fun. Whether you re an old pro or haven t worked a booth before, please consider volunteering this year. Volunteers should contact Len DiGirolamo at pghracer@gmail.com or call/text Len at Shifts for both Booths are Friday from 4:30p 7:15p & 7:15p 10:00p, and on Saturday from 4:00p 7:00p and 7:00p 10:00p. A Chairman is needed for the Funnel Cake Booth Project. Please contact GK Duane Cardamone if interested. Brother Frank Popies needs to fill 10 vacancies in his Parking shifts for Friday and Saturday nights. He wants anyone who can volunteer some time to contact him directly - ASAP. Reach Frank at or by at popies@windstream.net SCHOLARSHIP AWARD WINNERS This year our Council awarded two $1,000 scholarships to a child or grandchild of any member in good standing who is pursuing a post high school course of study at an accredited institution or trade school. The scholarship awards can be used to defray the expenses of any post high school course of study. One half of the scholarship is paid at the beginning of each semester of the freshman school year. The scholarship award is based upon the evaluation of high school grades, honors, activities etc., and a 500 word essay. Our scholarship award winners for the 2018/2019 school year are Leah Kuczinski and Adam Renda. Leah is the daughter of Tony & Tara Kuczinski and the granddaughter of Brother Tim Kuczinski. She is a graduate of Plum High School. Leah will continue her education at CCAC, training to become an Ultra-Sound Technician. Leah is pictured below with her father Tony and the Scholarship Committee. Adam is the son of Raymond & Lori Renda and the grandson of Brother Frank Popies. He is a graduate of Franklin Regional High School. Adam will be attending Penn State University Main Campus, majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Adam is pictured below with his mother Lori, grandfather Frank and Scholarship Committee Chairman Bob Carozza. Both winners thanked our Council and were honored to receive the scholarships. The Scholarship Committee members include Sal Altomare, Bob Carozza and Len Manganello. PIRATE GAME/TAILGATE Our annual Pirate Game/Tailgate outing is on Saturday, August 4. The Pirates play the St. Louis Cardinals at 7:05p & there will be a tailgate before the game starting at 3:00pm in Gold Lot tickets are available. Total price, including the tailgate, is $35 each and that covers your ticket to the game, food (hamburgers, hot dogs) & refreshments (beer, pop, wine). Each Knight is requested to bring either a covered dish, salad, tailgate snack, or dessert to the event. Member Knights & immediate family (spouse or significant other, parents, children, in-laws) have first dibs on tickets on a first-come first-serve basis. If after July 19 there are still tickets available, we will open it up so that you can bring outside friends. Tickets go on sale June 21. Please contact GK Duane Cardamone by July 19 via at duanecardamone@gmail.com (no verbal requests so your response is documented) with how many tickets you need. We hope to see many of you there.

6 ACTIVITY PLANNING SCHEDULE We have a very active Council. When too many activities and events occur in the same month, it strains our manpower and resources. To better coordinate our events and minimize the impact of too many activities, we follow an Activity Planning Schedule. The chart below lists the events, the Chairman and target week of occurrence. An exact date is not required for planning purposes. The planning schedule is updated yearly at the Officer/Director meeting.
