I heard the Sermon from the Pastor and it made me reflect on my life just as I hope this note makes you do the same. As I write this I am one day shy of my 60th Birthday (where did those years go?) and I feel so blessed for the people, events, success and failures I ve had. Every one of these ingredients has blended me into who I am today. I m sure there are some things all of us would like to change in our past, but think of the consequences- would you be the same Man? Father talked about the world today and how disillusioned and desperate many people feel. He said that many people look for a Super Hero to use as a role model - to be stronger, faster, fearless, smarter. But do you really need Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman or some other fictional person to protect, guide and strengthen you, or do you need a real life Super Hero? The super hero s I thought of were not like these costumed crime fighters, they were the ordinary every day people in my life from childhood through adulthood. Some still come to me even today. They are the people that help shape and mold my life. The influencers - Super Hero s for me were my Mother, my Grandparents and my Aunt s and Uncle s. Later in my life it was my Father-In-Law, Mother-In-Law and especially my Wife. All of them had a part in shaping the Man I am and I am forever grateful for their presence in my life. All of us have these influencers in our lives, we just never considered them to be Super Hero s but they are. Without their Love, Compassion, Guidance, and even strict Discipline and Support where would you be today? I came from a one parent home (my Father left when I was three). Not knowing him or having his influence in my life never seemed an issue. I always had my Aunts, Uncles and even my older Brothers to look up to and to keep me in line. Without these people I could have ended up like so many of the Fatherless, Non-Disciplined, Non-Loved children in today s society - on the streets and getting into trouble or worse. Thank God that never happened to me thanks to the love and even the stern discipline that was ingrained into me at a young age. I grew up respecting people and their property and possessions. How about you? I m sure none of you were privileged and had everything you wanted. Surely you got into some form of trouble through the years. At the time we didn t feel that the groundings, punishment, and especially The Belt or Wooden Spoon discipline was for our best, it sure didn t feel that way! Those corrections to our attitude and temperament stayed with us through the years and helped to guide and remind us of the consequences when we thought about doing something stupid again. So our personal Super Hero s definitely gave us vivid memories and kept us in line. This Life Reflection reminded me of a quote I saw recently - I think it fits in well with the theme of this article: The Power of a man s virtue should not be measured by his special efforts, but by his ordinary doing. - -Blaise Pascal This really sums up how we should live our lives, treat other people and do the right thing even when no one is watching. That is the definition of a Super Hero. Let your actions, deeds, words, compassion and humility be your calling card in life - not verbose Grand Standing for attention and praise. Who do you know that lived their life that way - I can think of others - but especially Jesus. Not a bad Super Hero to follow. At the end of the Sermon the Priest revealed his ideal Super Hero - God. As Father said there is no need for any other Super Hero when you have God. Amen! Wishing all of you a belated Happy Father s Day. VIVAT JESUS, Duane Cardamone, Grand Knight MISSSION STATEMENT Our Lady of Joy Parish, Knights of Columbus Council #12219, is a brotherhood of Catholic gentlemen. The Council provides an opportunity for fellowship with men who hold the same beliefs, values and priorities in life and in God. We are dedicated to the support of our brothers, their families, our parish, the community, our country and the Catholic Faith. Our charitable work, worship and devotion are unified as we focus on the four principles of our Order; Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism.

2 FROM THE CHAPLAIN It seems that Mother Nature is not interested in mankind s plans for the seasons of the year. I recall that the first day of spring we had a snowstorm. Now, the first day of summer we had a rain storm and terrible flooding all over the area. The rain overnight and the evening before were the averages of 1-3 inches all over the area. At least we are here SUMMER! I think we are all thankful for the summertime and we are hopeful that the weather this season lifts us up. As Knights I know this is a great season for you as many like to do outdoors ministries such as mulching around the church, helping set up and work for the festival, some pruning the bushes around the parish, some help trash pick-ups along highways, some help neighbors in need, and so much more. But summer is also a gift from the Lord to relax and have fun in the sun. We all have so much on our plates, including picnic plates, but to get together with and re-kindle friendships. In weeks and months to come so many changes will come to the local Church of Pittsburgh, but hopefully one thing that will remain constant is the dedication, promotion of freedom and justice, and fraternal charity of the Knights of Columbus towards any in need. In case you are interested, July is the month of a lot of things, like: Jul. 2 World UFO Day Jul. 3 Jul. 4 National Stay Out of the Sun Day Independence Day Jul. 5 National Bikini Day????? Probably each of you would be interested in each of these, but enjoy the fun in (and out) of the sun, be careful, and have a great summer. GOD BLESS YOU, YOUR CHAPLAIN, FR. AL ZAPF+ BLOOD DRIVE Our Council is sponsoring a Blood Drive in Father Marchukonis Hall on Sunday, July 22 from 8:00a-2:00p. Please give the gift of life. 6 ACTIVITY PLANNING SCHEDULE We have a very active Council. When too many activities and events occur in the same month, it strains our manpower and resources. To better coordinate our events and minimize the impact of too many activities, we follow an Activity Planning Schedule. The chart below lists the events, the Chairman and target week of occurrence. An exact date is not required for planning purposes. The planning schedule is updated yearly at the Officer/Director meeting.
