Stiff Workouts Every Afternoon Separating the Wheat From ~ the Chaff Hard workouts every afternoon 4 o cock to 6:30 have dwinded our track squad down considerabe, but sti the number of men who are hard at w6rk is a. peasing sight to those who are interested in the success of this year s team. Coach Tayor s find of Bi Morris was truy a godsend, for this young man easiy shows his hees to any man on the squad in the dashes. Captain Bakeney is in much better form this year than he was ast year, and is expected to set a new record in the state before the season is over. One thing that had been worrying the coach and manager was the fact that Randoph was etting sweet mik get the better of him, and he, suddeny awoke to the fact that he was about 15 pounds too heavy. But now this matter is soon to be setted, for Coach Tayor was struck with a briiant idea. Perhaps the haf-mie woud hep. Is it? We; just ask Randy. Deveopments with the javein are indeed peasing, and, what had been expected to be our poorest event, wi now turn out to be one of our strongest. Park and Crater are certainy doing we. Our track meet with Caroina, which had been schedued for Saturday the 1st of Apri, has been postponed on account of the condition of the track to Wednesday, Apri 26th. A Big Ceebration is Panned for Tonight on the Od Athetic Fied At ocock Friday night N. C. State Coege wi ceebrate on the od athetic fied in a genera pep meeting, accompanied by a hugh bonfire. The freshmen wi burn their caps and a custom wi be thereby estabished which we hope wi ive on our campus. The ro of the Freshman Cass wi be caed and every freshman wi be required to deposit the major portion of his cap. However, the white F of the cap may be retained as a souvenir. Every member of the Freshman Cass is supposed to.be on hand before 7 o cock, and any absentees wi be deat with by the Court of Customs. Every freshman wi bring a generous suppy of wood for the bonfire. The whoe affair wi be in charge of the Court of Customs. After the burning of the caps with due ceremony, taks wi be given on baseba, track and Student Government. It is hoped that every student of State Coege wi be on hand to hep make this occasion one of the memorabe events in the coege year. Let s turn out and keep the spirit of N. C. State aive. State Loses First Game of Season Furman Comes Out on Top in Opener; Loose Paying by State s Infied I State Coege opened the baseba season by osing to Furman of South Caroina, due to oose paying of the infied. Curtis, on the mound for State, pitched an extra good game, and deserved to win, as he aowed ony five safeties and struck out five men. The game opened by Babe" Ruth smashing out a two-bagger, but the visitors tightened up and he faied to score. The scoring started in the second inning, when Curtis waked the first man up and Johnson threw wid to second, which put the "runner. on third. Curtis errored a bunt aong with a boot by Redfern, aowing the first score of the game. State scored twice in the same inning, when Red- (Continued on Page 4) The Biggest Event of Our Coege Year to Take Pace Saturday Next Saturday, Apri 1, weare schedued for a doube victory: a baseba game and the eection of Student Government officers for next year. This wi be a busy day, but a joyous one. A of these events are starting proof of the wonderfu growth of the Red and White. On next Saturday, the day of the eection, the pos wi be open a day, from 7 a. m. unti 6 p. m. The ist of men nominated for the various positions is posted on a buetin boards. Look the ist over carefuy and pick your men for the various ofices. Let your inner devotion and oyaty to State guide yau in your choice of who sha be directors of our coege government. Don t forget put a big circe on your caendar around the date, Apri 1. We must win the baseba game and the Student Government eection. Don t forget your part, don t forget your vote. In one short year, Student Government has proved its inestimabe worth. The genera attitude has entirey changed. I coud name a number of things that have resuted from the new free spirit, which coud never have been accompished by mere co ege authority, miitary regime, or by force on the part of a student cass or section. In the years to come the eection of Student Government officers wi be one of the biggest events of the spring term. The day of the eection shoud be and no doubt wi be an annua coege hoiday. It is surey a day that is worthy of being made a big occasion. What Student Government wi mean to the future progress of our coege is more than any man can predict. Student Government is one of the (yo,ungest but one of the most important eements in student ife at North Caroina. State Coege. There is very itte hokus-pokus, or very itte doubt as to the vaue of the often overworked and often msi construed coege spirit. Some have an idea that coege spirit is a something that the coege owns as a matter of private property. Another conception is that coege spirit is put on as a uniform, as soon as one becomes a member of the student (Continued on page 8.) First Pubic Debate Proves to Be Successfu; To Be An Annua Event, On Friday night, March 16, the annua Senior debate between the Leazar and Puen societies was hed. The question debated was, Resoved. That the-phiippines shoud be granted their independence. Messrs. C. R. Barbour and L. R. Harri of the Leazar Society abe uphed the negative, whie Messrs. L. J. Jordan and C. W. Pegram of the Puen Society uphed the affirmative. Judge Cark, the Rev. Mr. Eis and R. A. McMian acted as judges for the debate. The decision as announced by Judge Cark was a victory for the Leazar representatives. And he said, If the best speaker was to be announced. that there was no doubt as to Mr. C. R. Barbour hoding the tite." This was the first inter-society debate to be made a pubic affair in severa years, and we are peased with the successfu outcome of this one. At the cose Dr. Riddick expressed his gratitude of the fact that the debate had been so aby discussed, and that he was desirous of having, this debate one of the big events of each year. We assure Dr. Riddick that he has voiced the exact sentiment of the societies, as it is their aim to give the iterary societies a more prominent pace at N. C. State. The preiminary for the Sophomore inter society debate was hed March 24. Messrs. W. E. Bridges and R. H. Scott were chosen to rep-,» resent Leazar in this debate. These and they are sure of giving the Puen rrien have prepared exceent speeches men something to think about on Friday night, March 7th. President Riddick,Addresses M. E. Society The M. E. Society had a very interesting and hepfu meeting March 14, 1922 The program consisted of speeches by the facuty. Dr. W. C. Riddick spoke on The Objects and Principes of Engineering Societies. Prof. D. B. Worth spoke on The History, Organization and Functioning of the A. S. M. E. And Prof. L. L. Perhaps the best way to size up a man as to his various quaifications is to determine his attitude in the past toward different campus activities. We can get a pretty good idea as to what we may expect from a man by finding out what he has aready accompished. At any rate, et us not forget that these are important days in which we are iving and that we have some important offices to be fied. Those sma orange-pink cards otherwise baseba tickets ook very promising indeed to overs of the nationa sport. We are going to suggest another reason for short skirts. They are probaby an advantage when it comes to running for office. We have decided not to run a basketba specia, as we had panned. We coud et you know why, but we wish to keep the information within The Technician office. When one of our Agricutura students tod us that he had been observing some prize-winning caves we began to wonder if he had been to a fair or whether he had been standing down on Fayettevie Street. OUR LEADERS AGAIN A few weeks ago we were discussing what shoud constitute the quaifications of our student eaders for the next year. We wish to continue the discussion here by emphasizing some additiona quaifications, the chief among which shoud be character. No institution can hope to ive without character, and if we wish to cut the throat of Student Government we can do it in no better way than by seecting eaders without character. Barto says, Character is the diamond that scratches every other stone." And if we are to progress it must be at the hand of eaders who have this priceess gem of character. Before considernig a candidate, et s satisfy ourseves that he is thoroughy grounded upon the principes of character, and we sha have taken the most important step in our seection of an important office. It need hardy be mentioned that any important student office shoud be fied by one having executive abiity. This Quaification wi vary in importance with the office itsef, so et s fit the proper student to the proper ofice. Here, again, is a pace where we can each one dispay tact and a keen sense of judgment in our support of a candidate. As a fina quaification, we shoud se sure that the candidate wi be wiing to work at the job he is given. It woud seem that some offices are accepted because of the honor that it attached to them, which is nothing short of a dastardy thing to do. We don t ike to mention it, but there has been an atogether too decided a tendency to shirk one s duty in fiing an office entrusted to him by his feow-students. So a very desirabe characteristic of Do You Reay Want a Greater State Coege? Feow students, if you wi kindy permit me, I sha say a few words about some things which vitay concern the progress and wefare of our institution. You know, and I know, that this our beoved coege.is not just what it might be; nor what we hope some day to have it be. We have adopted as our coege sogan, A Greater State Coege, but now honesty, feows, do we aways so conduct ourseves as to have a reasonabe assurance that some sweet day in the near future this wi be a greater State Coege? There are a number of things that have taken pace on our campus from time to time which have had an undermining effect upon- our rather good foundation for a greater coege. You know what these things have been, and so I won t attempt to ist or enumerate them. But there are two specific things that I wish to _ ca attention to. The first of these was, perhaps, done through thoughtessness; but its resuts were nevertheess effective, so far as inconveniencing the coege was concerned. The thing to which I refer is the hoe shot through the water tank and causing the oss of considerabe water. The other thing I have in mind was not done through thoughtessness or indifference, but through dis regard for principe and ignorance, a most unfortunate combination, and if aowed much headway wi add seriousy to the detriment of our coege. And, feows, I can see ony one way to stop such procedures, and that is for the better eement of this coege to stand firmy against such conduct. It may cause some of us to ose some popuarity among the indecent eement of our coege, but what do we care about popuarity when duty and the wefare of our coege is at stake? I te you, feows, the ony way to have a Greater State Coege is to want it bad enough to make some sacrifice for it. It wi not ony necessitate the doing of our duties in the cassroom and on the athetic fied, but we have got to go deeper than that and ive cean ives. Are you interested enough in your coege to make ybur ife count for cean iving and good conduct upon this campus? If so, et s do it what do you say? I wonder how many of us are interested enough in a Greater State Coege to meet in a group every morning before beginning the days work, to ask God s richest bessings upon our student body and upon every phase of our coege activities. We, I am gad to say that some among us are doing this every morning, in addition to going to chape. Then these feows are backing these prayers with cean ives. And it is. my candid opinion that if a of us reay cared enough to do this-thing, that State Coege woud get a front seat in the coege section of our country a position that a think rightfuy beongs to- her, and that the majority of us are earnesty striving to see her get and keep. Feows, now is our chance, nad notwithstanding the setbacks that have come to us, we are, I fee sure, making rapid progress toward a Greater State Coege. I beieve we wi a agree that our Student Government, under the wise and capabe eadership of Big Foyd and backed by the facuty and students, has thus far proven a great asset, and if a of us wi give it our heartiest co-operation, I see no reason why it shoud not prove a sti greater asset. So et s end up strong this year and make this the best year in the history of our coege, and ay a foundation for a sti greater progress next year. W. D. YARBORO. Dr. Gorre Addresses Le Cub Francaise. On Thursday night, March 16th, Dr. J. H. Gorre, of the Department of Modern Languages of Wake Forest Coege, addressed Le Cub Francaise" on the subject, The Paramount Importance of the French.. Language and Literature. Dr. Gorre is we known throughout modern anguage circes in North Caroina, and is recognized as an authority. The cearness and purity of the French anguage was contrasted with our own by Dr. Gorre. He spoke of the supremacy of the French anguage and its amost universa use. He urged that a take an interest in this anguage, not ony because of its commercia and dipomatic use, but for its iterature. Dr. Gorre spoke on the customs of the French peope and dissipated some of the wrong impressions which are current. He said that a Frenchman thinks straight and consequenty his anguage is straight. He stressed the point that the French anguage is the cearest in the word, and that the iterature in the anguage is the most interesting. Dr. Gorre cosed his address by urging the members of the cub to earn thoroughy the French anguage. Dr. Gorre spoke in a very peasing manner and iustrated his points by very humorous anecdotes taken from his own experience whie a student in France. L. U. BAILEY. From trave, observation and study, he probaby knows as much as any man aive about present word conditions. So great a man is Mr. Eddy, and so worthwhie is the messages that he brings, that the facuty has given two and one-haf hours off from coege time, in order that State Coege men may hear these great addresses. This is perhaps the greatest concession ever given to a visiting speaker in the history of the coege. Mr. Eddy wi give three of the foowing addresses: ing addresses: 1. Goheen, M.D., a medica missionary who has spent 15 years in India, visited the coege on the 24th, and spoke in chape, teing of the wonderfu progress of medica and agricutura missions in India. It was of specia interest to State Coege men to hear of the work that missions are doing in introducing modern methods of farming, improving the stock and conducting mode farms. Dr. Goheen taked to a number of men who are interested in the missionary enterprise. Missionary interest is growing at State Coege, and with the increasing need from technicay trained men on the foreign fied, it is ony a question of time unti a number of men from here wi be going out in this great work. tions themembers asked him about Student Government. He pointed out that the duty of uphoding Student Government and of enforcing its aws rested as much on each individua student as it did on the officers of the Student Counci. The members of the Friendship Counci appreciated very much Mr. Foyd s tak, which resuted in answering a number of questions on which they were not cear. The purpose of the counci is to create. maintain and extend throughout the student body high standards of Christian character." Therefore it is bound to uphod Student Government. 5 _. THE TECHNICIAN,5.«b.mt.._uwmw....L.. qugrs Former State Coege Stars. During the past four years the coaches at this institution have deveoped severa stars in the baseba word. George Murray, who has been the ido of four years in coege baseba, is a member of New York Yankees pitching staff; and is showing up extra good both in huring and hitting. 1 Dick Burrus, our former first baseman, is with Coumbus team of the American Association, and is considered the best first sacker in the eague. Joe Deberry, former captain of our 1921 team, is pitching for Louisvie of the same eague, and has shown the rea stuff in the training camps. Peee Johnson, star third baseman for the past four years, is with Raeigh, and is rated high in the ist of infieders of the eague. Baseba Prospects Coach Hartse s Charges Are About Rounded Into Shape The prospects for a championship baseba team are exceent, as ma teria for a winning team is abundant, athough some of it is new, and has not been given the fina test. With Captain Hugh Norwood and five other monogram men back from ast year s team, whose experience shoud enabe them to be the rea nuceus of a winning team, together with the new men that are showing up as rea ba payers. The receiving staff, which has been weak offensivey in the past sea sons, shoud come through this year with a good record; Passour, who for the past two years has done the buk of the catching, ooks better than ever before, as he has regained his throwing arm and his hitting is greaty improved. He is considered the brainiest receiver in the state. Red Johnson has shown more stuff than any new candidate for the receiving end. He is a good hitter, fast base-runner, and he has a good arm. Red" shoud come through as a reguar. Dutch Hoand, aso, has proved himsef a good receiver, and can be reied upon to hod down the job. The job at first base wi be hed down by Red Lassiter. This youngster, who throws from the Wside, ooks ike a second Dick" Burrus. He is an exceent fieder and heavy hitter. Red wi aso be used in the roe of pitcher, when a eft hander is needed. Ray Wiiams wi hod down this job when Red" is pitching. He is a steady payer and handes himsef we. Big Eer, a mighty sugger and a fairy good fieder, shoud come through before the season is over. Second base wi be handed again by Buck Bue, whose former experience shoud cause him to have a good season. Buck" has shown great improvement in his fieding and batting abiity. The shortstop position goes to Geo. Redfern, a etter man of ast years team. This young ba payer shoud come through as A-State" shortstop, as he covers more territory than ever before and fieds with the smoothness of a big eaguer. His batting has shown a vast improvement, and he shoud end the season with an average not ess than.330. Kid Toar, a member of ast year s squad, aso is showing up good and shoud come, through if caed upon. Shag Johnson has aso shown promise of a good fieder. The probem which has not yet been soved is over at the hot corner. Jess Tayoe has shown up better than any other of the candi dates. This youngster, who has a eve head and a wonderfu arm, is aso a good fieder and a natura hitter. Gib Arthur is aso showing up fairy we and has ots of experience, but is not as fast as Tayoe. He shoud come through before the season is over. Puss Erwin, an other experienced contender for this job, has shown up better than his rivas from a hitting point of view, but is not as fast a fieder and needs improvement in his throwing. The outfied wi be made up of a heavy-hitting combination and good gardeners. Captain Hugh Norwood wi hod down his reguar position in center fied. This experienced A-State outfieder shoud have a great year, as he is a heavy hitter, batting from either side, and the best fieder and base-runner on the squad. Babe Ruth wi aso hod down his reguar job in the outfied. Babe is extra fast, good fieder, (--_(_-_-"w-f---_iwb.fgi. and a heavy hitter, and ooks to be A-State materia. The ca for the other outfied job wi be from the trio, consisting of Big Foyd, Dutch Hoand and Sam" Redfern. The entire trio are good hitters and good fiy chasers. A shoud be caed reguars," as there is itte to choose between them. The pitching staff shoud have many victories. to its credit when the season coses, as the staff is made up of a strong personne. Harry Curtis, the ony etter man of the pitching staff, and who made a good record ast season, wi be caed upon to do the buk of the huring." This young hurer, with his easy deivery and eve head, shoud come through as a reguar. therefore pacing himsef head of a of the pitchers in the state. Johnny Cine, a big right-hander, shoud rate second to Curtis, as he has penty of goods ; and he is being counted upon to pitch his share of the games. Jim Aen, ~who was the mainstay of ast year s Freshman team, aso shows great promise of a good Spring Sport Suppies season. He has wonderfu stuff, and as soon as he regains his contro wi be caed upon to work. Foy Bea], Nick Carter and _, Legs" Vance are other hurers that shoud deveop. Lanky is the best shot on the team and by far the most popuar member. Our rife team went down in defeat for the first time this season, when the University won the fina stage of the Fourth Corps, Area competition, 844 to 774. This paces State second in the cup race. The Forida outfit is, by the way, our od rivas at this game. Last year at the R. O. T. C. "camp, State gave them the icking of their young ives with the service rife. They came to camp cocked and primed to carry away the event. Their team has an outdoor range and had been training for the match, but State made a reguar State fnish and waked away from them at the fina stage. The team is entered in the Nationa Intercoegiate, and with the new rifes and ammunition they wi, without a doubt, make a good race. Every man is out to beat Forida. The facts in the case are: coege spirit grows, it grows on the inside of the man, it coud better be caed student spirit. And Student Government is very essentia to the deveopment of the higher type of coege spirit. The kind of coege spirit thatis manifested ony on the day of a big athetic event is a poor spirit, hardy better than no spirit at a. Coege spirit shoud be ived on the campus and off the campus. It shoud be manifested in the cassroom, in the dormitory, in every phase of coege activity. As to its vaue, just ask the athete. He can te you of the big game that meant so much to the coege, when in the ast few minutes his strength and fight were sipping fast, things for a moment began to whir round and round the game most over. Then with a powerfu roar a famiiar ye from the throats of a_ thousand husky, oya supporters came drifting across the fied. One feeting gance showed that every supporter in the beachers was on his feet, crying, shake it off, od man fight em! fight em! The mist suddeny ceared, those trained musces of stee that had been so neary exhausted a moment ago sprang back into ife and action. A cear, steady brain guided the pay the game is over, another victory is ours! The same spirit that makes coege athetics great and worthwhie, that makes a championship team when without it there woudn t have been a chance, shoud and wi make the reputation of the coege in schoarship, or in any other respect, the greatest in the whoe country. As I have said, true coege spirit is within the man, it is the inner devotion and oyaty, it is the man, and the important fact is, this spirit grows and grows and grows if the man wi ony give it a chance under proper conditions. Coege responsi-, biity (obigation vountariy assumed), persona interest in the coege and coege activities, work, and fair pay are a vita to the growth of coege spirit. Our assumption of the responsibiity to govern ourseves offers us the chance to deveop a great spirit through honest effort and fair pay. But why the ong discussion on how to have a great coege spirit, when every State Coege man knows the joy and power of the true Tech spirit, summed up in the words, a greater and better State Coege aways.
