This incudes pupis with SEND and the most abe. As a priority, the schoo is enabing its vunerabe pupis, incuding those with earning difficuties, to fourish academicay in RE. Exceent These descriptors shoud be seen and used as a guide. They are not exhaustive of exempary practice. Requires Improvement It is better than Good. For exampe: It is not yet Good. Pupis are inspired by RE and recognise it as a chaenging but safe space to expore their own and others reigious, spiritua and phiosophica convictions criticay and responsiby. Pupis confidenty give age appropriate theoogicay, phiosophicay and socioogicay informed accounts of Christianity and other reigious traditions. Pupis have significant opportunities to engage in diaogue with a range of reigions and wordviews. They give age appropriate evauative accounts of the continuing roe of reigion in contemporary British and goba society. RE eaders in the schoo are recognised as activey invoved in eading innovation within schoo/academy structures and at oca, regiona, or even nationa eve. VA ONLY RE teaching and earning is consistenty graded good with a high proportion that is better than good through reguar schoo monitoring (verified at inspection). Based on the data avaiabe at the time of the inspection, considering context and recent cohorts, attainment and progress for a pupis is above or at east in ine with other core/comparabe subjects within the schoo, ocay and nationay (nationa expectations at GCSE). This incudes pupis with SEND and the most abe. As a priority, the schoo is enabing its vunerabe pupis, incuding those with earning difficuties, to fourish academicay in RE. 19 Evauation Schedue Ineffective as a Church schoo If, in the judgment of the inspector, the schoo has not maintained its distinctive Christian foundation and is ineffective in more than one of the categories beow, it is ikey that the schoo wi be judged to be ineffective as a Church schoo. This judgement wi be discussed (see separate guidance) with the diocese and wi be agreed by the appointed critica reader. For a schoo in a MAT an Ineffective as a Church schoo judgement wi trigger a recommendation that the nature and appropriateness of the MAT s support for the distinctive nature of the schoo shoud be reviewed by the diocese. 1. The schoo s eaders have faied to estabish and sustain a Christian vision for the schoo that has sufficient regard to the schoo s origina foundation and to promoting behaviour and reationships based on dignity and equaity. 2. The schoo s eaders have not estabished systems to ensure effective Church schoo governance incuding a system that monitors the distinctiveness and effectiveness of the schoo s Christian vision. 3. The schoo s eaders have not taken sufficient notice of the advice provided by the oca diocese in ine with nationa guidance, incuding in particuar Reigious Education in Church of Engand Schoos: A Statement of Entitement and Vauing A God s Chidren. 4. The schoo s eaders have faied to ensure that coective worship refects the schoo s distinctive foundation or funding agreement. 5. The schoo s eaders have faied to ensure that the provision of reigious education in the schoo refects the schoo s foundation or funding agreement. 6. The overa quaity of education and its outcomes does not meet the needs of many pupis and has itte regard for the needs of vunerabe pupis incuding those with earning difficuties and there is itte or no evidence that this is improving in any consistent way. The Nationa Society (Church of Engand and Church in Waes) for the Promotion of Education 2018 Page 17

20 Evauation Schedue Reporting If Ofsted has judged a schoo to be requiring improvement or inadequate within the tweve months preceding the SIAMS inspection it is unikey that the schoo wi receive a judgement of more than one grade higher in the SIAMS inspection. If both coective worship and reigious education are requiring improvement it is unikey that the schoo coud be good overa. If eaders, incuding governors, cannot articuate how bibica teaching roots the schoo s vision, giving it coherence, reevance and sustainabiity the schoo coud not be good overa. In the case of a joint schoo, inspected under the SIAMS framework, it wi not be possibe for the schoo to achieve a grading of good or better if it does not equay refect the ethos of each of the reigious bodies of its trust deed. So, for exampe, a joint Methodist/Angican schoo must show that it refects both Methodist and Angican inspection priorities. The inspector wi award one grade for the schoo. They wi then in a schoos aso give a grade specific to the impact of coective worship. In VA schoos and former VA schoos ony an additiona grade wi be given specificay for the effectiveness of RE. The Nationa Society (Church of Engand and Church in Waes) for the Promotion of Education 2018 Page 18

21 Evauation Schedue Gossary Schoo s vision The schoo s Christian vision and associated Christian vaues. The schoo s vision shoud be specific to the schoo s particuar context and foundation. It shoud aso have regard to the Church of Engand Vision for Education and/or Methodist principes as we as any diocesan vision for education. Leaders A those invoved in the strategic deveopment and impementation of the schoo s progress as a Church schoo incuding the headteacher, the senior eaders of the schoo, the midde eaders, schoo governors/academy directors/ federation executives and MAT eaders incuding CEOs. Whoe schoo community Pupis, a schoo eaders (see above), staff (incuding a support staff), parents and a those in the oca community invoved in the schoo. Loca church community The oca Angican church connected to the schoo, other oca churches and the diocese. In the case of the Methodist Church, the oca Methodist church, other oca churches and the circuit. If the oca church connected to the schoo is unabe or unwiing to offer the support required by the schoo, it is the responsibiity of the schoo to make sure it seeks support from the diocese or wider Methodist community. Forma partners May incude the diocese/circuit, the oca church and deanery, a muti-academy trust, a federation of schoos, schoo to schoo reationships (incuding with schoos in other countries), eary years settings, oca authority and chidren s services, chid and adoescent menta heath services (CAMHS). Governors Where governors is used in this document it refers to the governing body of the schoo and incudes academy directors and members. The grade descriptors The grade descriptor for 'Good' describes what is expected of most Church schoos. The 'Exceent' exempar seeks to describe exceptiona practice in addition to the expectations of 'Good'. 'Requires Improvement' is described as practice that is 'not yet Good'. These descriptors are not exhaustive and inspectors wi use their professiona judgement. Theoogy In the context of RE, conversations about foundationa beiefs within reigions and wordviews; examining the key ideas or concepts in reigions and beief systems.* Phiosophy In the context of RE, conversations about thinking, reasoning and making judgements: investigating the nature of knowedge, reaity and moraity and the way in which we reason about them.* Human science In the context of RE, conversations about the human dimension of reigions and beiefs: enquiry into the ived and diverse reaity of reigions and beiefs in the word today.* Reigious iteracy The abiity to hod age appropriate informed conversations about reigion and beief Church schoo Church of Engand, Methodist or joint Church of Engand and Methodist/Roman Cathoic schoos and academies. Informa partners The oca community, incuding parents. Companion inks Officia internationa diocese to diocese companion inks within the Angican Communion as we as other overseas schoos inks, inter-diocesan inks and inter-regiona inks. * These definitions are taken from the Baanced RE project deveoped and written by Jane Chipperton (Diocese of St Abans), Giian Georgiou (Diocese of Lincon), Oivia Seymour (Diocese of York) and Kathryn Wright (Diocese of Norwich).
