1 TheOutook University Circe United Methodist Church A are wecome. A the time. June 2015 chak tak BY DR. KENNETH W. CHALKER On May 7, 1915 one hundred years ago a German U-boat intentionay fired a torpedo into the side of a commercia ocean iner, the Lusitania. The ship the argest passenger iner of its time sank in 300 feet of water in ess than 25 minutes, sending 1,959 peope into the water and resuting in ony 764 survivors. Of the 1,195 peope who drowned, were crushed or died from exposion injuries from the torpedo, 27 were itte babies babies! How does a submarine commander who gives such an order to fire on such a ship, or the crew that carries the order out, ive with INTENTIONALLY kiing innocent chidren and babies? In the past 100 years, a great evi has been growing among us. In war, in any kind of confict, peope with guns, airpanes, ships, submarines, tanks, bombs and a manner of weapons who are trained in miitary tactics, maneuvers and organized vioence, have targeted civiians unarmed peope, itte chidren and babies to make their point or achieve their goas. Coatera damage has been taking pace for centuries as nation has risen against nation, as revoution or insurgency or rebeion or riot has taken pace in our word. What a great tragedy the reaity of coatera damage has aways been. But, in the ast 100 years, a great, cowardy evi has taken the tragedy of coatera damage to perverse, cod-booded dimensions. Unarmed civiians civiians who aways incude women, chidren and itte babies have become targets of peope with guns targets of gun-carrying fok and the poitica groups that fund, resource, equip and train them. It is a monstrous reaity. By the time these words are being read, uchak tak continued on page 6 Jeff Day, Administrative Counci Chair, reads procamation of appreciation to Dr. Chaker as Roger Schute, Co-Lay Leader, ooks on. 5 June 2015 ALL ARE WELCOME. ALL THE TIME. 5 Greater Ceveand Congregations Addresses Socia Justice ucontinued from page 1 designed to strengthen and improve the quaity of ife in our neighborhoods. Currenty, there are more than 30 member congregations, which incude Jewish, Isamic and Christian faith communities. Whie Protestant denominations Baptist, Lutheran, United Church of Christ (UCC), Episcopa, Presbyterian and American Methodist Episcopa (AME) are represented, there are currenty no United Methodist churches in the coaition. GCC has identified six major areas of ongoing concern/action: education, jobs, heathcare, crimina justice, food accessibiity and gun vioence. Because of recent community events invoving citizen-poice reationships, GCC has focused much of its current effort on addressing the consent decree submitted by the Department of Justice to the City of Ceveand. The May 17th presentation represented a first step in the process of determining whether our church shoud join GCC, with those in attendance earning about the requirements of membership and what the next steps woud be. There was a consensus of opinion among those present that we as a congregation shoud, in fact, join the organization; a sma group of individuas wi meet to draft a proposa that wi be presented to the Administrative Counci for approva. Subsequenty, during a May 26th march to the Justice Center, GCC member demands, as presented to Prosecutor McGinty in front of 1,000 members ast May and to Mayor Jackson and US Attorney Dettebach in front of 1,154 members this February, incuded these: Shift ow-eve, non-vioent drug offenses to Municipa Court; increase aternative dispositions; expand Drug Court; and treat a juvenie offenders the same across the county. Compete the Consent Decree with these recommendations: constitutiona poicing (bias- free poicing; use of force; and stop, searches and seizures); reorganization of interna accountabiity (review and revision of poicies, procedures and practices within the Ceveand Division of Poice); community engagement (permanency, transparency, accountabiity); and financia sustainabiity. Dr. Chaker Recognized for Visionary Leadership Estabish a permanent and independent Community Poice Commission. For more information about GCC or how you can become invoved, pease contact Daniee Gadomski Litteton at dgadomski218@ gmai.com or Jared Gadomski Litteton at jareditteton@gmai.com. ucontinued from page 1 member Brian Misch, presented by Administrative Board Chair Jeff Day and Co-Lay Leader Roger Schute, who were accompanied by Co-Lay Leader Barbara McEachern and members of the Trustees, Finance, Staff-Parish and other committee chairs. A paque affixed to the wooden facade adjacent to the marbe steps states that the chance was competed under the vision and enthusiastic eadership of Rev. Dr. Kenneth W. Chaker. The congregation stood in enthusiastic appreciation for Dr. Chaker s steadfast effort to open up the chance to afford additiona fexibe uses and provide for handicapped access. The design aso aows for movement of the organ consoe for concert/recita presentations. The renovation was part of our church s pan to create a space that refects the open and incusive nature of the merger of First Church and Epworth- Eucid Church in January Athough not initiay prepared for this worship service surprise, Dr. Chaker shared his sincere appreciation for this expression of gratitude for his roe in the competion of the chance transition. The congregation s appause was foowed by a group photo commemorating this momentous occasion in the evoving ife-cyce of our Church in the Circe. 6 6 University Circe United Methodist Church June 2015 chak tak ucontinued from page 1 another Memoria Day wi have been ceebrated. We wi rightfuy be honoring and remembering a those who have ost their ives in defending this nation and its singuar freedoms. This is right. This is nobe. Honoring those who have made the utimate sacrifice and served our country in this way is so very, very important. However, what is happening these days that causes civiians of one nation to become targets of another? What has occurred that civiian popuations are intentionay targeted by terrorists itching to set off a dirty bomb? What has happened that armed men and women can imbed themseves with civiians and give themseves a sick permission to conduct terrorist acts? What has occurred that protests have ost the nobe goa of highighting injustice and become, for far too many, vioent occasions to oot, burn and target civiian businesses and shops? What has We have been targeted for abundant ife, not the terror of random destruction. taken pace that civiians and, therefore, chidren, have become targets? The responses to these questions and a that is behind them coud go on for pages. Responses coud incude the horror of Jihad and the demonic perversion of power at any cost or reigious sef-righteousness gone mad. Such responses woud resove nothing. What is so necessary for iving in such a mad reaity of evi is that we remember this: God makes us and has aways made us the focus of ove, mercy, redemption and grace. God instis within us courage, hope, meaning and a sou of unconquerabe power. We have been targeted for abundant ife, not the terror of random destruction. If we are going to thrive in a vioent word of evi that targets us for strategic destruction or thrive in a secuar word that woud reduce us to being nothing more than targets of commercia vaue and marketing, we must hear, take in and share the truth that we are far more than targets. We are instead the focus of God s ove. We are indeed God s chidren. If we are to ive and utimatey triumph over evi of any kind, what other truth and understanding wi set us and keep us free?!
