Nominations have been made for the Y. M. C. A. offices. It is up to every eigibe man to vote in this eection and hep seect the men who are best suited for these positions. How many of you have heard the question, When do we take off our caps? It seems that the caps are beginning to bear down rather heaviy on the heads of our Freshmen. We want to congratuate the Rife Team on the fine showing that they are making. They are eading the Fourth Corps Area. There is a wonderfu chance of them winning the match and aong with it the Siver Trophy offered to the winner. The State Sophomores were guests of the Meredith Sophomores ast Saturday night. This is an annua affair and is ooked forward to by the State Sophomore Cass. The present Seniors remember yet the fine time they had when they were entertained by the Meredith Sophomores. Last week there appeared an artice in the paper written by a member of the Senior Cass regarding caps and gowns for commencement this year. It is hoped there wi be some artices this week discussing the question. The Senior Cass is to have a meeting next week, and this matter wi doubtessy be brought up. It woud be much better, however, if the suggestion were thought of some before going to the cass meeting. The student body is anxiousy awaiting the fina decision regarding the ineigibiity of Dutch Hoand and Red Johnson. This wi make a bad gap in the baseba team and one that wi be hard to fi. Dutch hasn t found out yet how far he is going to be abe to hit them this year if aowed to pay. Both of these men were important factors in the winning of the South Atantic Championship ast year. Boys, we truy hope you can pay, because we need you and want to see you pay. Do You Want Your Artice Printed? Since the instaation of the Journaism Department, The Technician Staff has been L.ought face-to-face with the probem of eiminating artices for various issues. At times there are many more news artices turned in than can possiby be pubished; consequenty, this necessitates an eimination of the undesirabe ones. If the contributors wi take into consideration the foowing suggestions, I am sure their artices wi have a better chance of weathering the copyreader's critica eye: 1. Have the artice typewritten, doube-spaced. 2. Be carefu in punctuation and speing. 3. Don t eaborate too much; give the facts conservativey. 4. Turn in your artice by Wednesday morning. Jor: W. Jonxson, Managing Editor. To The Freshmen Spring eections are on hand and the Freshman Cass has much to do with the outcome of the eections. Many and many a time it has been the Freshman Cass that has eect ed a man. What kind of men are you going to eect this Spring? Are you going to know the men you vote for or are you going to take someone ese s word that he is the best man? Don t vote for a man because he beongs to the Pine Burr Society. Don t vete for a man because is an athete. Don t vote for present-day methods of teaching reigion. With this probem. facing the I a man because he is from your co nnty or in your society. Vote for the man who you honesty be ieve is best quaified to fi the pace. Hon. J. Stitt Wison is coming to the campus soon. To a the od men who have heard him it woud be useess to say how good he is, but we want to urge a the men who have never heard him to go to hear every one of his addresses. You never wi regret it and you wi regret it if you miss one of the first and go to some of the ater ones. Start with the first one and Now that exams are over, it is go to them a. time for the cigars and refreshments. The Juniors are anxious. The counci members have been now to get themseves jobs, but eected. We want to congratuate wait unti they have had them a three casses on their seec- awhie. tions as representatives. There are some good men up for officers of Student Government. It is up to every man on the campus to vote in the coming eection, but when you come to the pos to vote, be sure you know the man you are voting for and make yoursef beieve in that man. We want the very best man possibe for the office of President of Student Government. Don t vote for a man just because he can do this thing or that thing, but vote for him because you beieve he is the best man up and that you beieve he wi do everything in his power for Student Govern ment if he is eected. (: rive tiese men that are 11p for office a itte thought, and ask yourseves the foowing questions about them: Is the man popuar with the Student body Is the man a good mixer? Has the man a good schoastic record? In a crisis, woud the man be eve-headed enough to know what to do? Does the man command the respect, and wi he continue to command the respect, of a the men? Last of a, ask yoursef the question, IS MAN BIG EJOI GH FOR ; iplace? Don t forget that the winner of the. Torris Athetic Trophy is to be decided at the Student Government eection. Don t take. someone ese s word about the three men who are up, but decide for yoursef. We Student FOrum Advertising Reigion In ast week s Technician there appeared a sma advertisement near the bottom of the editoria page which gave the subject to be discussed by the Sunday schoo teacher, the hour, and the church where the discussion woud take pace. This is the first advertisement The Technician has received concerning reigion. Those who are behind such a movement are certainy putting reigion on a business-ike basis. The time has come when reigion must compete with the moving picture show, the popuar ecturer, the morning spin to the country cub, and other forms-of diversion that are far more interesting to peope than the reigious peope, what must they do to sove it? Are they to sit back and say the word is going to the devi, and et it go at that? I say, no! Peope are human. If they enjoy an automobie ride aong a picturesque country road on Sunday morning more than -they do a dry, proonged discourse on Adam and Eve, human nature is so constituted that they wi itake the ride. I woud, mysef. Then the question arises: How may peope be made to take an interest in reigion?" It can be remedied ony by the popuarizing, if you pease, of reigion. This may be done by having interesting, instructive, and ogica discussions of present-day probems; and not probems that faced the ancients and coud not be appied to our compicated society if we woud exert our utmost efforts to make them appicabe. When reigious organizations recognize the fundamenta truths of bioogy, socioogy, and the other sciences and adjust their teachings to them, then peope and especiay coegetrained men and women wi become more interested in reigion and go to church rather than to the various 'paces of diversion. It is human nature to want to be affiiated with some reigious organization, where one may go and worship his God, associate with Christians, and be in an atmosphere of feowship among men. Foks who stay away from church on Sunday mornings woud gady support it with their money and attendance if the dogmas were eiminated, so that every person Coud become the other s true friend. There is nothing more satisfying to a person than to know that his Christian friends wi stand by him in troube. Such friendship is true of OUR WEEKLY MISUNDERSTANDING By errr MACK (Apoogies to Staney, Raeigh Times) You say your Dad s Ford has atey been junked? No! No! I just wonder how many I funked! ony a few churches. Woud that a of them were paces of true feowship? JOE W. JOHNSTON. A Chaenge to State Coege Men Now that examinations are over, it seems to be an opportune time to bring before the student body a new probem, which has atey made its appearance here. This is a question which every ' thinking.man must devote some thought to, for future generations wi ikey be affected. It concerns our whoe State and especiay those men who expect to become engineers and agricuturists. Not ony are our students debating this momentous question, but rumor has it that facuty members have recenty hed heated discussions about it. Some of the facuty members of the Schoo of Agricuture have decided to bring this matter before the student body in open debate and have worded the question as foows: Resoved, That the Legisature of North Caroina shoud enact a aw prohibiting arge Didephis m rginiana from cimbing sma trees. It is evident that these animas do untod damage to our forests each year by cimbing sma trees; so the debate shoud be of interest to every taxpayer of the State. Among the facuty members who wi take part in the debate are: Dr. Z. P. Metcaf, Dr. B. W. Wes, Prof. R. H. Ruffner, Prof. D. S. Weaver, Prof. David Gray, and Prof. W. L. Cevinger. Each of these men has made a carefu study of the topic and is we prepared to present his views; then, too, each of these men hods a B. S. degree. The debate wi be hed on March 31 at 6:30 p. m. in Patterson Ha, under the auspices of the Agricutura DD HATS V HABERDASHERY S H0 E S WINCCHHMEY Fifth Avenue at 46th St. NEW YORK Cub. President Brown urges every member of the cub to be present and extends an invitation to a who are interested to attend.. Feows, the ony way to sette questions of this nature is by free and open discussion; therefore, I ca upon every oya State Coege man to see that this matter receives fu pubicity and that justice is finay deat out. E. G. MOORE, 26. Cross Country Team To Get Monograms. (Continued from page 1.) monograms in a sports,.and for size and kind of sweaters and monograms and sent them to the Facuty Athetic Counci to be approved. The counci passed upon these requirements ony a short whie before the end of the wresting season. Mr. Mier, then, intended to send the recommendation for cross-country monograms in with that for wresters. But the coach did not have the recommendation in on time, so it had to wait unti a ater date. ' The reason, as stated by Mr. Mier, why the recommendation for cross-country monograms was not sent in with that for footba is that this is the first year that monograms have been awarded in this sport, and he wanted to get everything that he coud started under the new system. It was a strong indictment of those sefish interests which desire war and which make money and gory out of internationa strife. Mr. Ray was the winner of the 1924 inter-society decamation contest. State Wins From Mis Tire Company In First Game of Season State s Nine Again Proves That It Knows Baseba Down on Riddick Fied ast Saturday, State s nine, with many new men in the ine-up, proved their superiority over the Mis Tire Company team, winning from them by a score of 15 to 3. From the ooks of things in genera and the game Saturday, knowing that Dutch" and Red" cannot pay, the prospects for this year are about as foows: Legs Faukner wi probaby hande the receiving, with assistance, at times, from Whitey Smith and Water Shuford. A three are etter men. Finding a reguar catcher shoud not be especiay dificut, a though Johnson s timey hitting wi be missed. Bostering up the inner defense is an entirey different proposition. At present Coach Doak is experimenting with Johnny Gibert, ast year's shortstop, at third base, A Johnston, I an outfieder, at short, and W. B. Faukner, a Sophomore who has had no previous coege experience, at second base. Captain Red Lassiter, of course, is a fixture at first base. The combination offers rea possibiities. Then, there s Rat Austin, who payed third on ast year s Freshman team, and Johnny Matheson, yearing shortstop. Both youngsters ook good, and with the infied a shot to Tommy Harri, another efthanded first-seeker from ast year s Freshman team, wi understudy Captain Lassiter. The youngster can hit, and he is earning how to shift his dogs around the cushion. He wi be a reguar by another season. With Bob Corre and Charie Shuford back, the Tech outfied ooks strong. A Johnston payed right. fied ast season. If he is moved to the infied, it is probabe that Waiter Shuford wi step into the vacancy. Croaker Wade, a husky squad man, who has a hankering to pitch, a sweet hitter, may aso be caed upon for outfied duty, and exacty the same statement appies to Dixie" Davis. There are about a dozen other fiy chasers anxious for a reguar job. The game Saturday was very comica throughout. Watson, pitcher for the Mis Tire team, and Arthur, first baseman on the same outfit, being especiay quaified, payed aeria ba of a very high type. Those paying Saturday for State: Johnson, Corre, C. " State Coege appears to be getting in better focus with the pubic eye than ever before. We are finding so many unique ways to advertise our coege. It certainy pays to advertise. Any modern fapper can assure you of that. We advertise, as do a schoos, through our athetics. This is a very od and approved method of advertisement, provided a schoo puts out good teams. Whie we are not the best in the word, we are certainy not at the bottom, by any means. Another form of advertising is the finished product which we turn out to represent our coege in the various waks of business. State graduates rank high in the business circes; both of this State and other States. Our judging teams and debating teams add another important cog to our machinery of advertising. But it is the unusua that catches the pubic eye now, and in order that advertising may be effective, it must hit the pubic so they wi take note of it. First, we discovered that nove means of training our entire student body for track; the running broad jump, mound-scaing, etc. Then they paced across the numerous chasms narrow pieces of timber. These were used as supstitutes for tight ropes, and tended to deveop sef-confidence and abiity in baancing onesef whie maneuvering through a tight pace. During this period, the miitary department et sip a ine chance to advertise themseves as instructors in with the army of occupation at Neumeid on the Rhine. Coone Gregory came to State Coege in August, Since that time he has been at the head of the miitary department of the coege. vogue. This furnished a background against which we were abe to dispay the fact that we had not ost that good od spirit of conquest. Ever pursuing, ever achieving earn to check and to firt. Of the unusua, 'mystery is perhaps the most fascinating. Therefore, we have introduced this in our campaign of pacing ourseves in the imeight. Our current sensation is the mystery of the disappearing Freshman. This, of course, happened at the first pubic appearance of our varsity baseba team. About the time that the occupants of the beachers were osing interest in the game because of the monotony of seeing State varsity romp around the bases. whie the rather one-sided score pied up; a fou ba soared over the backstop. This being the ony kind that the Athetic Suppy Company coud put across. The majority of the crowd foowed the ba with their eyes. A Freshman reached to catch it, and just as the ba setted in his hands, presto! he disappeared. Since then, it has been the tak of the coege and Raeigh, specuating over what became of the disappearing Freshman. This itte touch of mystery wi probaby be foowed by more and better mysterious pots. What next? State Coege, keep advertising aong Coege Observer. Feeding the Dairy Cow Perhapsvthe greatest drawback to the dairy industry is the fact that the dairy cows in the South are suffering from a ack of sufficient roughage. Experienced dairymen wi know that the idea condition for a dairy cow is an abundance of sunshine, penty of fresh air, a the water she can drink, and a sta that is comfortabe in which she may rest. A cow needs a itte feeding of grain each day. There is no pasture in this section that wi grow a we-bred anima without a sma amount of grain each day. If there is any one thing acking in a feed, the best way to make it up is by the feeding of a number of different feeds. In cosing, the speaker caed the attention of the cass to the fact that there were thirty states in the Union that had more Hostein-Fresian cows than any other breed. When a man chooses dairying as a ife work, the greatest probem that presents itsef is the choice of feeds and the proper feeding of them so as to obtain the greatest returns per doar invested. said Mr. Staney Combs, Fied Agent for the Hostein-Fresian Association, in an address to the amma-breeding cass Wednesday morning Ṫhe average production of dairy cows in the State of North Caroina is 2,500 pounds of' mik per cow each year. which is consideraby beow the average for the United States as a whoe. NEW HIGHWAY TO PASS STATE COLLEGE. CAMPUS The ancient adage that a roads ead to Rome, coud now be, with a propriety, modified to read that a roads ead to State Coege. 7 Coege Course Reay Basic, Says Word Fier Message of Lieutenant Smiing Jack Harding to Youthfu Aeronautica Enthusiasts A good coege education is one of the best foundations that a youngman interested in aviation and its aied fieds can have," says Lieuten ant Smiing Jack Harding, of the Word Fiers. It is interesting to note that Lieu tenant Harding is a native of Tennessee, the son of an inventor and eectrica engineer. His eary eaning toward mechanics inspired a twoyear course in engineering in Vanderbit University, and ater at the University of Tennessee. He enisted in the air service as a buck private, trained at the Mechanics Training Schoo at St. Pau, and then won his fying spurs at Wibur Wright Fied at Dayton. He was rated as master signa eectrician and aviation mechanician there. In 1919 he made one of the first Atantic Pacific fights. His sunshiny disposition and genia good nature, in the face of a sorts of adversity, won for him the sobriquet of Smiing Jack among his companions on the epoch adventure of the age. Mr. Harding beieves that we are on the e've of a great era of air transportation. For the young man who has had a standard course in Mechanica Engineering and a speciaized course in Aeuronautica Engineering, there are great possibiities in aviation and its aied fieds," Mr. Harding decared. Perhaps the path to success in this fied may seem ong and difficut trave for the average young man. However, a standard course in Mechanica Engineering not ony prepares the youth to meet the many and compex probems of this industria age in which We now ive, but it aso heps the young man to find himsef, as the immorta Woodrow Wison said in his book, When a Man Finds Himsef. One can earn to fy in a month and a haf or ess, decares Lieutenant Harding. For did not the Engish turn out fying men in eight hours fying time? It is admitted that fying experience wi make the aeropane designer more practica and the chief engineer more efficient. But fying is not a there is to the game. Just think what a great service that person can render humanity who discovers a way to increase visibiity through fog, the aviator s nightmare. Imagine what it wi mean when aviation has reached the point when it wi not ony vibe the fastest and safest means of transportation, but aso the most economica means of the best type of transportation! Finay, et us not forget those who paid the supreme price that aviation might ive. For aviation, ike a branches of engineering, is The science of controing the forces and utiizing the materias of Nature for the benefit of man. Romance Is Not Dead, Says Professor Sedd I oved two girs, Wake Forest Professor Depores the Present Reaistic Epoch in Literature (From News and Observer.) Merey to mention the name of romance now is to put yoursef be yond the pae of the eect, decared Dr. Benjamin Frankin Sedd, head of the Department of Engish of Wake Forest Coege, speaking ast night in the Meredith Coege auditorium here, on the subject of the romantic period in iterature. And yet romance is not reay dead, continued Dr. Sedd. Haven t we just had four years of financia romance in which we have been foating on badders, as it were, in a sea of bondage. I fee that were we to have four more years of such financia romance in which we might cut down a the trees and concrete a the roads we wi have committed amost the unpardonabe sin. Why, we pour out our money in torrents on highways, and yet when a professor wants to say something on romance he cannot find a decent book on the subject in the Engish anguage. Dr. Sedd traced the growth of the romantic movement, describing its different phases in France, Germany, and Engand. He depored the present age of reaism, branding Masters Spoon River Anthoogy as garic and speaking of Amy Lowe s Ragweed and Vache Lind say's Ragtime. If the readers of modern iterature reay enjoy any of it, they can enjoy anything," stated Dr. Sedd. Romance was characterized by the speaker as something that sets your bood tinging and makes you forget that you are a married man. Despite the present reign of rea ism in the, iterary word, Dr. Sedd decared that the word must be pre pared for another awakening such as the Renaissance for the Romantic Movement. This od earth of ours is sti a fertie pace, he said. It s not as od as we think it is." The speech of Dr. Sedd featured -the fifth of the joint meetings of the iterature cubs of Meredith, St. Mary s, and State. The speaker was presented by Dr. Thomas P. Harrison, of State Coege.
