4 Lesson One: Wecome to Tseh Oomad The Ten Principes 1. Tseh Oomad is designed either as a revision course for Jewish young peope who have acquired some reading skis but require reinforcement, or as a sef-study reading course for adut beginners of any stripe or denomination! It is particuary usefu for those who woud ike to read the Hebrew Bibe. 2. The Contents page ists the order in which consonants, vowes and other constructions are introduced. Consonants not taught in aeph bet (aphabetica) order. Rather we start with the most famiiar Hebrew word shaom which contains the consonants Shin, Lamed, Vav, Mem. Each esson has a Hebrew word heading that incudes any new forms which are taught in that esson. There are no new forms taught in essons 13, 16, 19, 20; these are for consoidation. 3. Identification and pronunciation of syabes are considered crucia and are taught eary in the course (incuding the roe of the shva). 4. Athough a words are provided with meanings, Tseh Oomad is not a anguage course. To write or speak in sentences you wi need to wait for the foow-up course, or go esewhere! 5. Words and phrases of reigious/ethica significance based on the Jewish prayer book (Siddur) and Bibe (T Nach) are emphasized, with some Modern Hebrew (Ivrit). 6. Hebrew usuay stresses the ast syabe, but there are many exceptions. The audio recordings serve to indicate stress as we as pronunciation. 7. Variations exist amongst Jewish communities regarding pronunciation. Tseh Oomad utiizes pronunciation that is generay accepted in the Engish-speaking word, based on what used to be caed Sephardi pronunciation, perceived as being akin to Israei pronunciation. North Americans pronounce shaom as shaome. Vive a difference! 8. Because the system of written vowes was a reativey ate innovation, Hebrew is amost competey phonetic; unike Engish there are no diemmas about how to pronounce combinations such as o-u-g-h (as in rough or ought or bough). 9. I have confined a number of anomaies, incuding haf vowes, to Lesson 18. My approach is practica; to get the reader to decode the symbos that constitute the Hebrew aphabet and vowe system as quicky and painessy as possibe without information overoad. 10. Once you have purchased and downoaded the programme, you are wecome to distribute print versions to other members of your study group without further charge. Anyone ese must buy their own copy. I try and answer any queries by emai. Enjoy! Deveoped Latest edition: January 2019 Pubished by Lawrence Cohen using the DavkaWriter word processing programme. The author can be reached at Lawrence@hebrewtips.com for advice and tutorias.
5 Lesson Two: The Letters of mÿeÿÿ Let s begin with the etters of the most famiiar word in Hebrew: Shaom. It can mean heo or goodbye or peace. Read these words that begin with a shva: m i n i n Ÿen 1 for the sake of... to who? my name is... his name is.. ª n ÿÿ n m n m 2 triange for exampe paying to pay It s easier to read these words if you read them syabe by syabe: - ª n ÿÿ- n m - n m - The shva s main task is to indicate that a etter does not have its own vowe. Read these words with a shva at the end of the first syabe: n n n n mÿe 3 chatter apricot day before yesterday E a stomach cramp mi n 4 competing It s easier to read these words if you read them syabe by syabe: n- n n- n mÿe- E- mi - n Shva is sient at the end of a syabe. It is abbreviated to two yods in most prayer books and is easiy recognizabe. By contrast, the words transated as our God in ine 1 and your God in ine 3 are not abbreviated as they do not contain the consonants of the Hoy Name and Jews may pronounce them as written. ** The AH vowe beow the shin is pronounced OH as the syabe is cosed and unstressed.
