Mayday got its start as an internationa distress ca in It was made officia in It was the idea of Frederick Mockford, who was a senior radio officer at Croydon Airport in London. He came up with the idea for mayday" because it sounded ike the French word m'aider, which means hep me." Somebody saw the necessity of coming up with a universay understood message to et somebody from anywhere know that you are in troube and you need hep. On the ocean a ship from Germany woud understand that an Itaian ocean iner is in troube when they transmit mayday. For God so oved the word that he gave his one and ony Son, that whoever beieves in him sha not perish but have eterna ife. For God did not send his Son into the word to condemn the word, but to save the word through him. (John 3:16-17) Sünde (German), peccato (Itaian), pheaca (Irish), grzech (Poish), грех (Russian), pecado (Spanish), and bűn (Hungarian). No matter what the anguage this word brings troube for the whoe word: sin. Yet there is ony One way to be rescued from it s danger and death: ca out to Jesus for savation. God knew the word needed a universa way out of ife-threatening peri, so He sent his Son. Everyone who cas on the name of the Lord wi be saved. 2 Memoria Day Crosses We are so thankfu for those who work hard to pace Memoria Day crosses in the front awn of Brundidge United Methodist Church. Each cross bears the name of a church member who served in the miitary and died. This is a powerfu beautifu witness to our community. Hod On Unti the Course of United Methodist Church is Defined The Commission On the Way Forward s report wi be submitted to the Counci of Bishops this month. The Commission On the Way Forward was composed of 32 cergy and aity from around the word to discuss ways of addressing the present impasse in the United Methodist Denomination. What is that impasse? A significant number of cergy and aity want to see homosexua marriage ceremonies in the church and practicing homosexuas ordained in the denomination, and a significant number do not. A specia genera session wi be hed in Saint Louis February 2019 to dea with this issue. The outcome of that specia session wi ikey send a resoution to be ratified by a annua conferences before the 2020 genera conference. I am aware that across our country United Methodist Church members, cergy, and even congregations have aready eft the United Methodist Church over this important matter. However, a who eave no onger have any infuence. I have said this in many settings The oca church, Brundidge United Methodist Church, is more important than the district, the conference, and the denomination. Why? We are where the Gospe tread meets the road. We bring Jesus into our community. Brundidge UMC is a Gody, Christ-Centered, Bibe-Beieving Church. Where do I stand? I stand on God s inerrant Word to be received in whoe not in part. The Aposte Pau s words are Christ s words. Jesus said If you ove me, you wi obey my commands. (John 14:15) Pau has identified specificay that the practice of homosexuaity is dispeasing to the Lord (Romans 1:26-27, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, and 1 Timothy 1:9-10). I treat everyone with respect and never withhod the ove of Christ. But, Hoy Matrimony of homosexuas in the church is inappropriate and a person who confesses to being an active homosexua is disquaified from serving in any church eadership position. I am a sinner as we as everybody ese. Yet, the standards of Heaven are not the standards of the word. Where the Hoy Scripture gives us a cear directive on what is not acceptabe we must foow. No one has tried to te our church to do anything in confict with our interpretation of God s Word and the standards we uphod. We are so joyfuy busy serving our Jesus now that we don t have time to ponder over a the what if s. There s ony one what if : If Jesus came today woud He find us sharing the Gospe with others and iving for Him? Hod on. Work on. Satan wi not see us parayzed with anxiety and anger over this issue. 3 What to do if we have an active shooter in the church? When you are aware of a person entering the sanctuary with a gun immediatey ay fat under a pew. If you ca 911 state We have an active shooter at Brundidge United Methodist Church then hang up. The 911 operator wi probaby te you not to hang up because they are trained to keep in contact with the 911 caer. If you keep the ine open the voice on the phone wi direct the shooter s attention in your direction. Do not stand up and run for an exit door. We have armed responders in the congregation. They need to have a cear shot of the intruder and you do not want to get caught in the crossfire. I am praying that this is ike the fire dri at schoo in that we practice, or know about it, but it doesn t happen. In May of Every Year We Ceebrate Methodist Heritage Sunday Usuay a the focus is paced on John Wesey and his heartwarming experience at a Bibe study meeting on Adersgate Street, London, on May 24, The fact is often overooked that his brother Chares had his heart-warming experience three days before on May 21, He was stricken physicay i and Chares Wesey was spirituay distraught. Chares wrote these words in his journa on that day: At midnight I gave mysef to Christ, assured that I was safe, whether seeping or waking. I had the continua experience of His power to overcome a temptation, and I confessed with joy and surprise that He was abe to do exceedingy abundanty for me above what I can ask or think. -Chares Wesey And can it be that I shoud gain An int rest in the Savior s bood? Died He for me, who caused His pain? For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing ove! how can it be That Thou, my God, shoudst die for me? Amazing ove! how can it be That Thou, my God, shoudst die for me? A year after his heart-warming experience Chares Wesey composed this hymn And Can It Be to mark the anniversary of his conversion. He woud write over 6500 hymns in his ifetime. ( ) Yes, John Wesey was a great preacher and organizer.
