1 79 Parish Contacts Parish Office: Pastor Kerry: Pastor Cell: Parish News Confirmation and Youth It has been decided by the church councils to postpone the official beginning of the new confirmation year until later when it is better known in what form pastoral leadership will take place in the parish. Stay tuned. SPECIAL EVENT! Zion Lutheran Church has invited St. Adrian Catholic Church to, together, celebrate the 500 th anniversary of the beginning of The Reformation. This historic event will take place on the afternoon of Reformation Sunday, October 29 th, 2:00 pm, at St. Adrian s building. It would have been held at Zion s building had it not been hoped it would not be big enough to accommodate what is envisioned as the large group that will gather for this momentous occasion. Please, mark your calendars. It is not often that we can say we have been part of an historic event. In the church s life, they don t get bigger than this: two once-sworn enemies (Lutherans and Roman Catholics) together celebrating the very thing which once divided them the Reformation. The annual Adrian Community Thanksgiving Service will be held at Zion Lutheran Church s building Tuesday, November 21 st, 7:00 PM. There will be a lunch following for folks to hang out together and converse. Also, if there are any youth who are willing to help with the ecumenical food drive that takes place prior to the worship service, please contact St. Adrian Catholic Church office for information as to when and where. The new interim minister for Hadley and Zion is Bob Ossefoort. He is a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran in Lake Wilson and is currently taking classes to become a Deacon. He will start November 5 th. The worship schedule remains the same. All Saints Sunday will be observed November 5 th to remember all those who have died or been baptized this past year. Zion will once again collect for the Nobles County Community Christmas Baskets. Donations will be received through the month of November. Cash to purchase food Non-perishable food New adult gifts of warm clothing, especially gloves and hats New mittens, hats, socks, etc. for children New toys for children Toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soaps, combs Red Cross Bloodmobile is at the following locations: November 7 Lismore Legion, 2 7 pm November 8 Adrian High School, 1 7 pm November 9 American Reformed Church, Worthington, 1 7 pm Set clocks back one-hour before you go to bed Saturday, November 4 th. 3 Kerry s Column -- The pastors ponderings Two stories: A couple of months ago, I was working out in our machine shed on this moving thing that has occupied too much of my energy lately. I was preparing to pull a long extension cord out from between the steel beams and corrugated metal wall along the inside of the shed. I had strung it there shortly after we moved here because there were no electrical outlets on the north end of the shed. To remove the cord, I had to reverse the process by which I had strung it. So, now, I removed one end so that the cord could be pulled out. With a screw driver I dismantled the female end and disconnected the wires from the contact terminals. The last step before pulling the cord out is, of course, to slide the remaining part of the female end off the cord. As I slid that over the end of the cord, it caused the bare wire ends to touch -- and a bright welding-type arc exploded in my hand. I had not thought to unplug the other end 30 feet away. After a brief assessment, I concluded three things: 1. I was alive and relatively unscathed; 2. I had a slight burn to a callous formed next to my wedding ring; and 3. a curious little copper-colored knob had been left on that ring as a reminder of this little episode. The burn on my callous has long since healed, but the little knob remains on my ring. Why? Why have I not filed it off? Because it serves as a reminder, a kind of confession, you might say. And it is this: I sometimes do things that do not reflect intelligence. Sometimes those things can hurt. Sometimes such things can kill, either metaphorically or literally. that. Life s circumstances can converge in such a way that we can find ourselves in a pickle. Well, I knew I needed cash, since my credit card had been deactivated due to my information having been compromised, and my new one had been sent to Jamestown, North Dakota. I had a plan as I approached Vinnie s. I would swing by my branch bank right across from Vinnie s, get cash, then go eat. So, I pulled into Vinnie s, sat up at the bar, ordered the day s special (Burger with sweet, homemade pickles and a fried egg), and watched Vinnie prepare it, while he bantered with the folks sitting at the bar. The burger was excellent! At Vinnie s, when you are almost done eating, a waitress will come with a complimentary little cup of high quality ice-cream. Why it hit me just then, I don t know. Who can understand the mind? As I dug into the little dip of desert, it suddenly occurred to me that my stomach s influence had bested my brain s conscious power and had caused me to go directly to eat and not to collect $200 (for you classic Monopoly geeks). I had forgotten to get cash, and the $3.31 cents I had on me would likely not cover the $8.50 special. Continued page 4 I was lucky this time. It didn t kill me. Never-the-less, reflection on that incident causes me to extend an apology to any of you who might have been hurt by less-than-intelligent-or-sensitive things I have said or done during these past years serving here at Hadley, Adrian and, yes, Kenneth, too. The second story is something which happened in the middle of October. I had just visited my dad at the Minnesota Veteran s Home in Luverne and was about to head to Sioux Falls for a hospital visit when I decided to stop for lunch at Vinnie s Dang Fine Dine right on the main drag, highway 75. It is a delightful little dive where Vinnie flips the burgers right in front of folks sitting at a bar, the menus each attached to a cable above which can be pulled/extended down to read, and the only music is from records, oldies playing constantly from a turn-table. A sign says, If it ain t on vinyl, it ain t played here, or something like 3
4 Continued from page 3 As I nursed my ice-cream, my mind raced. What should I do? How do I get myself out of this pickle with any semblance of dignity? I glanced out the side door which faces the outdoor cash machine at the bank. I could just leave my stuff there and run over incognito and get cash. But surely people, including Vinnie and the waitress and the folks sitting right on each shoulder at the bar stools, would notice and wonder why I was leaving without quite finishing and without quite paying. So, I decided to just play it straight up. I called the waitress over and said, not even trying to whisper, This is awkward, but I forgot to stop at the bank across the street for cash before I came in here, and I don t have enough. Would it be OK if I ran across the street and got some cash? I ll post bond by leaving my I-phone here to ensure my return. The waitress said, You don t need to do that; I ll just leave your ticket by the cash register. You can pay when you get back. Grace. THAT is what I have received a ton of during my 13 years here. I have enjoyed the many gifts of this place: the resiliency of a faith community that has experienced huge changes; open minds to explore new music, procedures and other things; generosity, love, patience and forgiveness. For me, these can all be summed up in one word: GRACE. Just as I met God s grace in Vinnie s Dang Fine Dine, I have dined on God s grace over and over as I have lived among you as pastor-with-clay-feet. I have received a generous portion of patience and forgiveness in this place, and it has strengthened my faith in the God you reflect in your faith, hope and love. Thank you-all for the privilege of having served with you in the shared ministry of Christ our friend and savior these past 13 years. Sola Deo Gloria - to God alone be the glory! In Christ, Pastor Kerry Pastor s quote of the month: A Christian is never in a state of completion but always in a process of becoming. (Martin Luther) Zion Lutheran Council Meeting September 6, 2017 The meeting was called to order by President Chuck. Members present were Carol and Chuck, Angelle, Deb Graham, Mel and Deb. The minutes from the August meeting were read. A motion was made by Angelle, second by Carol to approve the minutes as read. The motion carried. The treasure s report was reviewed. A motion to accept the treasurer s report was made by Mel, second by Deb. Motion carried. REPORTS: No one has had any feedback from the informal meeting we had about the future of our church. There is no information about our interim Pastor. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: The last Sunday of October will be Pastor Kerry s official last day. Chuck will get in contact with Pastor Skoglund. Ellie Boese is still interested in doing our directory. We will try to have picture times set up by next meeting. Shingling the roof is on hold for now. NEW BUSINESS: A call committee has been appointed- Mel Kroon, Angelle Berreau, Irene Reinke. Sara Henning will be the alternate. Carol cleaned up the closet behind the organ. She was wondering what to do with the old altar sets. We will ask Hadley, or the Synod if they are wanted. There was no more business. A motion to adjourn was made by Carol, a second by Angelle. We closed with the Lord s Prayer. The next meeting is October 5, 2017 Deb Kroon Council Secretary Bonus (and final) quote: A happy fart never comes from a miserable ass. 5 Zion Lutheran Council Meeting October 5, 2017 The meeting was called to order by President Chuck. Members present were Pastor Kerry, Carol and Chuck, Kevin, Randy and Char, Angelle, Deb Graham, Mel and Deb. The minutes from the September meeting were read. A motion was made by Carol, second by Deb G. to approve the minutes as read. The motion carried. The treasure s report was reviewed. There will be five Sunday s in October. The special offering for Equipping Congregations... taken in September was $ A motion to accept the treasurer s report was made by Mel, second by Angelle. Motion carried. REPORTS: No one has had any feedback from the informal meeting we had about the future of our church. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Nothing further on the directory. -Shingling the roof -Chuck estimated the cost of materials for the shingles would be about $8000, and labor would be about as much, making the job about $15-16,000. It was suggested to contact now and get on the list for next year. Also, it was suggested to price a tin roof as well. Randy and Kevin were going to contact the roofers. NEW BUSINESS: -Chuck has been in contact with Pastor Skoglund. Bob Ossefort has been proposed as an interim for our congregation. He is a lay member of Good Shepherd in Lake Wilson. He is taking classes, and has been given a special dispensation by the Bishop to administer sacraments. He is our only choice so far. Pastor and Carol both have met him. Mel will contact him to set up a meeting, as well as committee from Hadley. We would not have to pay housing allowance and it was suggested to contact the Synod office for guidance on what to pay him. He would also be part-time. He would start the first weekend in November. It was discussed that Pastor Skoglund would be the person to help us through the transition process, since Bob is a lay person. Carol volunteered to come up with questions concerning compensation for the call committee. The committee would be responsible to follow up. -Pastor Kerry s farewell potluck is set for Saturday, October 28, tentatively at 5:30 pm at Hadley s Community Center. -Confirmation is scheduled for 10:45 am on Sunday, October 29. *notice service change. We have three being confirmed; Jordyn Gyberg, Shawna Rogers and Austin Henning. -Also on Sunday, October 29, at 2:00 pm, there will be a joint prayer service celebrating the 500th anniversary of The Reformation at St. Adrian Catholic Church. -A discussion was begun about the future of Zion. It was suggested that we be open to all the possibilities that present themselves- pairing again with Hadley; pairing with another church closer, maybe a bigger church; pairing with another denomination, (we were reminded that we would remain Lutheran with our own services. Lutherans have paired with Methodist, Presbyterian, Reformed Church in America, Episcopal). This will be an ongoing conversation. -We did not have to pay Pastor Skoglund for her Sunday here. A motion was made by Mel, second by Angelle to give an extra $100 to the Equipping Congregations in Pastor Skoglund s name. Motion carried. -Pastor Kerry expressed his thanks for his time here and working with our council. This is his last council meeting here at Zion. There was no more business. The next Council meeting is set for Thursday, November 2, A motion to adjourn was made by Carol, a second by Angelle. We closed with a benediction from Pastor Kerry. Deb Kroon Council Secretary 5
