B Austiin, Texas Pastor s linda727@juno.com 8 Class of 2016 Elsa Aleman George Bourianoff Monique Paisley Emily Rochford Clerk of Session Karen Laffere Ponder Thomas Terbay s Understanding of Coming Home to HPPC Coming Home Have you ever left a place and then come back many years later and realized that that is where you belonged after ll? That very thing happened to me regarding Hyde Park Presbyterian Church. I am 49 years old and have had everal home churches. My first home church was HPPC. I was baptized here by Reverend Bud Engstrom in the fall f 1966 as an infant; my parents dedicated me to God. My memories of that time are sparse but clear. I remember he pew my family sat in every Sunday, and the toys I played with while my mother took notes during the sermon. I emember certain people including my Sunday school teacher, Maggie Albers. Most of all, I remember feeling safe, oved and accepted. As a child I attended two other churches with my family. Although my parents were very active in hese churches I did not especially enjoy attending them. When I became an adult, I set off, with my parents lessings, to find a home church of my own. I visited several churches of different denominations and finally settled n one where I became a member. I was very active in that church until I moved out of town. While working out of own I was injured on the job. Shortly thereafter I moved back home with my parents. n the following years I struggled with disability, both physical and mental and suffered a crisis of faith. My amily had returned to HPPC and become very active there. I attended sporadically during this time of ersonal chaos, but I didn't want to listen to anything God (or anyone else) had to say. On Christmas Day 2002, my world was once again thrown into more chaos. My mother became critically ill nd was hospitalized. I met Reverend Linda Bourianoff at that time. I was deeply touched by her aring demeanor and the way she accepted me for who I was. I began to form a bond with the church as a esult of that acceptance. After my mother passed away, I drove my father to church services and other ctivities, even participating once in a while. Following my father's death I experienced a great outpouring of love, support and generosity from the members and friends of Hyde Park. I began to reconnect with people I knew in the congregation and to make new connections with those I didn't. I also began to feel accepted for who I was at a time when I ertainly didn't feel worthy. I began toying with the idea of officially joining the church. A little over two years go I had another health crisis. When I came home from the hospital the members of the church once gain poured out their blessings upon me, taking care of my physical, spiritual and emotional needs. n December of 2015, I finally decided to join the church. I followed up by meeting with the session February 21. I was accepted as a new member at that time. I was then presented to the congregation and eaffirmed my baptismal vows on May 15, Pentecost Sunday. I am proud to be the newest member of Hyde Park Presbyterian church. I feel loved, accepted and safe once again. I am in the right place at the ght time. Home!
