Synod News Upcoming Events Joys and Concerns Congregational News Synod Transitions Synod News Severe Spring Storms Update A tornado in Moore, Okla., was part of a May storm system that swept across Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. According to news reports, 24 people are confirmed dead with 20 in Moore and four in Oklahoma City. The tornado, which traveled on the ground for 20 miles, demolished an elementary school and destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses. Two ELCA congregations in Kansas were impacted by tornadoes May 19. Zion Lutheran Church in Hollenberg, Kan., and Good Shepherd Lutheran in Washington, Kan., both sustained damage to church property. No one was injured in the storms. The ELCA has made worship resources available in response to recent severe storms and through Lutheran Disaster Response, ELCA members and congregations may support tornado survivors in partnership with local Lutheran affiliates and ELCA synods. Synod Assembly Registration Closes this Friday 1/7

2 Registration for the 2013 Synod Assembly (June 7-8 at Our Savior's Lutheran in Sioux Falls) will close this Friday, May 24 at 5:00 PM (CDT). No further registrations will be taken online or by phone after that time.if you have questions about assembly registration, please contact Lois Borchardt at or Register now on the synod website! Synod Assembly Preliminary Report and Materials Online The 2013 Preliminary Report is now available online. You may download the full Preliminary Report or download and print sections individually from the synod website. Also posted online is the 2012 Audit Report, 2013 Resolutions Packet, and the Proposed 2014 Compensation Guidelines. Voting members are responsible for bringing these materials to the synod assembly, either printed or digitally. Wifi will be available in the Celebrate Center during the Assembly if you would like to read your reports on your laptop or tablet. A very limited number of copies will be made available at the assembly. Synod Assembly Housing Please make housing arrangements soon for the Synod Assembly June 7-8! There is a soccer tournament that weekend and housing will be limited. You are responsible for making your own reservations. The hotels with blocks for South Dakota Synod are: Sheraton $129 plus tax May 24 release date Days Inn $ plus tax May 23 release date Please let them know you are with the "South Dakota Synod Assembly." There is also dorm housing available at Augustana College. Information for those accommodations may be found on the synod website. Send Us Your Pictures! The ELCA is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2013 under the theme, "Always being made new." We will also be celebrating this anniversary at the South Dakota Synod Assembly. To show the history and tradition of the ELCA and South Dakota Synod, send us your pictures of worship, special events, potlucks, building projects, and mission trips to be displayed at the Assembly. The break on Friday afternoon will be provided by our congregations! Please bring one plate of the treat of your choice to the kitchen at Our Savior's Lutheran Church when you register on Friday morning. We look forward to seeing what congregations across our synod can bring to the table! Dakota Road at Synod Assembly South Dakota's own Dakota Road will be at the 2013 Synod Assembly as our music and worship leaders. They will also be giving a Thursday evening "Stories and Song" Concert. All are welcome to hear stories of God's work through the South Dakota and ELCA and enjoy the music of Dakota Road. It will begin at 6:30 PM on June 6 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Download the poster for your congregation! One-to-One Training Webinar with Sue Engh Tuesday, May 28 7:00-8:00 pm CDT or Thursday, May 30 7:00-8:00 pm CDT Listening to God comes through prayer, Word and Sacrament. Listening to discover the possibilities for mission and ministry in our congregations and communities happens through listening to one another and to our neighbors. In this one hour training, Rev. Susan Engh, program director of ELCA Congregational based Community Organizing, will offer the basic training for and model/practice a "one-to-one" conversation. Groups learn well together! The cost is only $20/group ("group" includes one link for the webinar to one location on either night), or $50 for a bonus recorded four-part webinar series "Reaching out to the Community" with Alban Institute produced material by consultant, Joy Skjegstad. Sarah Goldammer and her husband, Eric, welcomed their new baby into the world on May 15th. Her name is Amelia and everyone is doing really well. She was 8.4lbs and 19 1/2 inches long. Rev. It is an opportunity for relationships with children of Pueblo de Dios, the Lutheran Latino Ministry at Augustana Lutheran, and also for children in the Sioux Falls community who attend the Spanish immersion program through the Sioux Falls School District. Bridgebuilder Training at Luther Seminary The Bridge Builder Team of the Twin Cities, MN, is sponsoring a Bridgebuilder Training August 26 - August 28, 2013 at Luther Seminary. The cost of $ includes the Training Manual, the Leader's Packet, and one year's consultation following the training with Dr. Steinke, plus coffee breaks.
