1 March 2019 OUR LADY OF OLIVES COUNCIL #3907 Chaplain's Message... In-the-Midst of the Storm Hold Strong! Dear Brother Knights, In recent days, we have experienced significant wind storms like many of us have never seen. Weather forecasters predicted, and reports that followed, described them as wind gusts up to 60-miles-per-hour and in some locations 74-per-hour winds were registered. Some described these wind gusts as comparable to a category one hurricane. All I know is that they were severe. I noticed that a-number-of neighbors on my street had downed trees as a result of these storms. May prayers go out to them in the inconveniences they experienced and the unexpected burden of expense with tree-removal that was unanticipated. When you see those fallen trees, offer a prayer for the property owners. Seeing the ravages of these winds, reminded me of the challenges that we are all facing in our lives, particularly the pain and suffering that has resulted from the reported sexual abuse scandal in the Church. Many lives have been severely damaged as a result, and I dare say that all of us been broken by the sins that revealed. What are we to do? I am taking a lesson from the trees; we are to stand tall. I say that because for many of us, the topic of clergy abuse may well be one of the saddest moments, and among our darkest days in our current history as Church. Not dismissing the significance of this topic, the Church and our lives frequently face situations that indeed challenge us. Our roots must be deep so that this storms in our lives do not break us, for we are to be healthy and strong! That doesn t mean that we are not caught off guard by tragedy and the reality of sin, but that we stand through it. We may sway like the trees in the storm, but we remain firmly rooted firmly rooted in Christ! God can always make good come through even the most horrific situations. Trust Him. Pray for all victims of abuse, and in the case of this recent scandal, we must also appreciate the call to personal holiness. Perhaps in the past, we were overly focused on raisingup good Catholics who knew the rules and teachings of the Church. All that is good, but we now recognize that forming disciples that love Jesus, must be at the heart of what discipleship means. May our love for Jesus continue to flourish, as we recognize the strength and difference that he makes in our lives. Be assured, the storms will come, however, let us not be uprooted but, trust firmly in the Lord who continues to guide and work through His Church. In Jesus, Father Zywan Chaplain, Council #3907 The Olive Branch In Our 65 th Year Chartered - November 14, 1954 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Shooting for a STAR! Grand Knight's Message... Brothers, Brothers, The month of March makes its usual appearance with gusty winds abound! I can never keep it straight if the old saying is: In like a Lion; Out like a Lamb or the other way around. Either way, March always reminds us that spring is not far off, and for me, the reminder of how many leaves I must rake out of the garden beds that didn t get done last fall. On March 2 nd, we had our 12 th Annual St. Patrick s Day Dinner & Dance at the Pine Community Center and were treated to the Irish Dancers with music by D.J. Jack Armstrong again this year. A great evening was had by all! With March 6 th being Ash Wednesday this year, we also begin our Season of Lent. While we can be quick to think this means: No Meat on Fridays and Parish Fish Dinners we know the true meaning of our Lenten Season is one of Prayer and Spiritual Reflection, with time set aside for Penance, Fasting and Almsgiving, in preparation for the Celebration of Easter. It is also a time when our Council supports the 40-Days-for-Life prayer vigil in front of the Planned Parenthood building in Pittsburgh from March 6 th through April 14th. Please contact our Council Life Director, Chris Kelley if you can help with this ever-important effort to protect God s unborn children. (details in this issue). Looking forward, we have moved our first meeting of the month to Thursday, March 7th because of Ash Wednesday, and we have our Quarterly Priest Luncheon at the Vincentian Home scheduled on that same day of March 7th. On Saturday night March 9th, we spring-forward and set our clocks ahead one-hour as Daylight Savings Time begins 2:00am Sunday. A couple of important dates in April to mark on your calendars: Saturday April 6th, the Catholic Men s Fellowship (CMF) is holding their 13th Gathering of Catholic Men at Soldiers & Sailors Hall in Oakland. They have trimmed it to 4-1/2 hours this year; Noon to 4:30 pm. So please men, do yourself a favor and make the time to attend this wonderful event. Stop by and visit the Knights of Columbus table while you are there (details in this issue). And finally, on Friday April 26 th, our Council is having our Gold-Tie & Pass-the-Gavel Banquet at the Butler Country Club. More detail in April Olive Branch. In closing, may I leave you with this thought: It s not the belief, but the practice that matters - Fr. Richard Rohr William Romig Grand Knight

A 4 th Degree Knight may become part of the Assembly's Color Corps. These members are recognized widely by their Distinctive Attire of the new Uniform and Sword. These members regularly take part in Civic Events such as Parades and Wreath-Laying ceremonies, and at Ecclesiastical Functions at Catholic churches. The 4 th Degree Color Corps is the Visible Arm of the Knights. For more information on this exemplification, contact PGK SK Larry Emark <emarklw@verizon.net> or any other 4 th Degree Member. Ref: < and < Visit < to learn more about the many Benefits of Membership in the Knights of Columbus. Online Membership gives us: A Faster Way to Join One of the most common objections to joining the Knights of Columbus is I don t have time. Through Online Membership, a join process that can take as many as two-months now takes five-minutes. An Amplified Message The Online Membership initiative is backed by a substantial, digital and data driven marketing campaign, that will find and work to convert prospective members. We are investing in advertising membership in the pilot jurisdictions. A Stronger Brand This initiative does not change requirements for membership, but it does provide a new membership initiative that is tailored to younger men and busier men who may not yet be ready for Council-based Membership. This low-pressure, low-commitment experience enables us to bring more men into the fold. Council-based membership is still the goal, as is progression through the Degrees but this will provide a new option for the beginning of a Knight s journey. Remember: Online Membership is not in competition with Council-recruitment, and can be a great tool for Councils to use. When a man joins the Order online, he can convert to Council-based membership as soon as he'd like: Provided that he goes through the Admissions Committee and Degree Process. When he does convert, he will retain: All-of the benefits he enjoyed in the Online-Membership initiative, the Council will receive credit for him as if he were a new-member, and the Council will receive a dues-adjustment. It's a win-win! Attached is a brief document that outlines many of the frequently asked questions about this pilot program. This is a tool for non-members to join, not for existing members. We are excited to begin this initiative, and to begin it with you. Thank you for your partnership and for your leadership in your Councils and Districts. We look forward to welcoming more Catholic Men into our Brotherhood and helping them to experience the trans-formative power of membership in the Knights of Columbus. Attached is: A Handout about Online-Membership for all Councils to use: (See attached file: Online Membership Handout.pdf) Thanks to SK Paul P Foster: We have a new-way to promote Membership: We Knights are all about AID: Activities(yoursupport), Insurance(availability), and Degrees(membership): The Admission (1st) Degree Exemplification has a focus on Charity - the first principle of our order. The Formation (2nd) Degree Exemplification has a focus on Unity - the second principle of our order.
