1 November 2016 OUR LADY OF OLIVES COUNCIL #3907 Chaplain's Message... The Mission of On Mission Dear Brother Knights, There is a lot going on in the diocese these days. Bishop Zubik has invited all Catholics to envision the Church of tomorrow. Our core truths will always remain the same, but how do we see our role as disciples of Jesus and how will we carry out his mandate to go make disciples our primary focus. Of course, before we can move forward, we need to appreciate our past. Looking back at history can create a comfortable sense of nostalgia. The next step requires an honest assessment of the present, and there lies the challenge. Not just as a diocese, but our region, our nation, and the world for that matter have changed dramatically over the past 50, 25, even 15 years. This kind of reflection if honest can be difficult. But the fact is we have changed, and rather than be idle or remain in denial, Bishop Zubik is calling us to envision our future as the Church of Pittsburgh and help to create it! In order to do this, we must be open to where the Holy Spirit is leading us and trust God. I have listened to some of the faithful who seem stuck in where they have been or where they see themselves now. Others respond with openness which is demonstrated by a spirit of curiosity, excitement and courage. I believe that this is the place God is calling us to be. No matter where we are in these matters, what is essential is that we all seek God s will for our communities. I m not saying I presume to know exactly what that is, but this does need to be the desire of all our prayers. Secondly, let your words be pure. What we say can have as much affect as what we do. Are our conversations though reflecting different perspectives and possibilities pure? Are we seeking what is best for the Church of today and tomorrow or, are we simply clinging to the past, stuck in the present while ignoring the facts and the future. Our words do make a difference. What is essential is that we remain centered in Christ. If we can commit to being of one heart, though of different minds, I believe we will grow into that place where the Lord wants us to be; a people whose charity toward one another is self-evident. These are just some thoughts on what it means to be to be The Church Alive! What are your thoughts?.fraternally in Christ! Due to the circumstances related to the sale of the Hall, we have been unable to meet there and have had to make alternative arrangements. We held our September meetings at Saint Alexis School cafeteria. In October, we gathered in the Multi-purpose room at Saints John & Paul. Our Council has been busy with a variety of activities. Tootsie Roll Drives were held at Saint Alexis and Saint Alphonsus Parishes the first weekend of October. Saint John Neumann s Tootsie Roll Drive was conducted during the second weekend of October. Saints John & Paul s Drive was completed during the third week of September. We continued to participate in First Friday Overnight Adoration in the Grotto Chapel at Saints John & Paul Parish. On October 8 th 2016 a number of our members participated with other Knights in the Columbus Day Parade in the Bloomfield section of Pittsburgh. Most are in one-hour shifts from 8:00pm Mass on the 1 st Friday of the Month through the night until 8:45am Benediction on Saturday morning. Please contact SK Larry Emark at <emarklw@verizon.net> or to get your name on the Adoration List. SJ&P also offers Tuesday All-Day Eucharistic Adoration (all year long) following the 7:00am Mass until 7:00pm Benediction. LONG TERM CARE AN IMPORTANT PIECE OF THE PUZZLE There are many financial consultants and retirement authorities who emphasize the need for a Long-Term Care (LTC) product for estate preservation and family protection. While many commercial life insurance companies have gotten out of the longterm care business, the Knights of Columbus considers LTC a very important piece of the family protection puzzle. The Order has been actively offering our members this product for nearly 15-years without a premium increase on current policyholders. Members who wisely purchased an LTC plan from the Knights in 2000 are still paying the same premiums today. Even better, our LTC coverage is backed by the full strength of the Order, which remains rooted in our strong Catholic values. Talk about stability when it counts. If we have not spoken about your need for LTC coverage in your family portfolio, please take some time out of your schedule to meet with me. Remember, long-term care policies are underwritten based on your health, and you most likely will never be any healthier than you are today. Contact me today if I can be of assistance to you Joe Joe Latess Phone: <Joseph.Latess@KofC.org> National Novena to the Holy Trinity Sunday, Oct. 30 Monday, Nov. 7 in prayerful preparation for the election Supreme Knight Carl Anderson and Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori invite everyone to join in a national novena to the Holy Trinity in the nine days leading up to the November election. It will start October 30th and end Monday, November 7th. Go to < and search for Election Novena. Most Holy Trinity: Our Father in Heaven, who chose Mary as the fairest of your daughters; Holy Spirit, who chose Mary as your Spouse; God the Son, who chose Mary as your Mother, in union with Mary we adore your majesty and acknowledge your supreme, eternal dominion and authority. Most Holy Trinity, we put the United States of America into the hands of Mary Immaculate in order that she may present the country to you. Through her we wish to thank you for the great resources of this land and for the freedom which has been its heritage. Through the intercession of Mary, have mercy on the Catholic Church in America. Grant us peace. Have mercy on our president and on all the officers of our government. Grant us a fruitful economy, born of justice and charity. Have mercy on capital and industry and labor. Protect the family life of the nation. Guard the precious gift of many religious vocations. Through the intercession of our Mother, have mercy on the sick, the tempted, sinners on all who are in need. Mary, Immaculate Virgin, our Mother, Patroness of our land, we praise you and honor you and give ourselves to you. Protect us from every harm. Pray for us, that acting always according to your will and the will of your divine Son, we may live and die pleasing to God. Amen.
