2 Our Vision P A G E 2 t he Pastor s pen A Passion for Your Purpose T HE F R I E N D L Y C O R N E R By: Pastor Warren E. Amlet God saved each of us with a plan and purpose in mind. Jer. 29:11 says I know the thoughts I have towards you, plans for a hope and a future. The French call it a raison d'être (a reason for being). As we begin a new year, we must stop and ponder the question, Why am I here? 1 Corin. 9 speaks of the gifts of the Spirit. Every believer once he or she is saved receives one or more of the gifts. It was Paul who admonished a young Timothy to stir up the gift (s) that was in him. When we don t use the gifts, they lie dormant and have no effect. We are saved to change the world for God. Let me further say that whatever we are truly called by God to do becomes a passion. We re motivated by an excitement to do it for the Glory of God and to see His kingdom come on earth as it is in Heaven. Remember the Magi, wise men who had a divine passion that lead them to Jesus, the Son of the Living God. Your passion is your power. It ignites the fuse in you to do God s work. Going to the next Spiritual level is allowing God to stir and move you to that next place (spiritual place) to which he has called you. Remember the Kingdom of God is always moving forward and the worst place to be is where God left. F. W. Boreman said we make our decisions and our decisions in turn make us. Make the decision to rise. Christ in the new Testament said many times Rise and be made whole. From the lowest position to the highest you are a child of God with a gift God has given you. Say to yourself - Gift I will arise and let God stir up my gift. Pastor Warren E. Amlet & Sis. Irene S. Amlet This year make a decision to Risk! It is true nothing risked, nothing gained. Nothing beats a failure but a try. Step out, step up and let God. He can and He will. He has done it before hasn t he? This year make a worth list not a wish list. 1. Embrace biblical giving - tithing 2. Embrace worship - Bible study, prayer meeting, Church School 3. Embrace evangelism - Share the Christ in you with others. 4. Finally embrace stirring up your spiritual gift. Yours in Christ Pastor Amlet FBCSP Make the decision to return. Maybe spiritually you ve been on E. God is calling you, as He called a blind man out of a crowd to come forth, to go forward in 2011 so you will see a little of Heaven. So don t do old things because they re familiar, don t complain, exclaim, embrace your deliverance. Fellowships with New First Baptist Church Taylorsville for the Hospitality Ministry Anniversary The Vision of First Baptist Church South Portsmouth is based on Luke 4: This is a ministry of helping people to get to the next level in their walk with God by helping the poor, healing the hurt, proclaiming freedom, restoring sight to those spiritually blind, releasing the oppressed, and to preach the good news of Jesus Christ with signs following. Recognizing that God is a God of purpose, FBCSP maintains an atmosphere where people can freely worship God, embrace His Word, experience His power and walk in His purpose. We express God s love by demonstrating unconditional love for all people, giving them room to grow, as we serve and advance God s Kingdom together.

8 P A G E 8 Our Anniversary Celebration T HE F R I E N D L Y C O R N E R By Sister Velma Brown The banquet committee would like to thank all who supported the 2010 banquet. It was a joy for the committee to work together to make sure that the celebration was a time to give thanks to God. Even in 1889 the believers had a mind to work. In 1889 a frame building 24 X 40 feet was erected on the corner of Beech Street and Centre Avenue by faithful believers from Mars Hill Baptist Church of South Hampton County. They wanted a place to worship God that would feel like their home church. The building they erected was given the name of First Baptist Church of Brighton. Over the years the name was changed to First Baptist Church South Portsmouth. On October 23, 2010, we celebrated the 121 st anniversary of First Baptist Church South Portsmouth and the 20 th anniversary of Pastor Warren E. Amlet and First Lady Irene Amlet. shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! For the first time the banquet was held in the recently erected Warren E. Amlet Fellowship Hall. Many members, neighborhood friends, several churches, were represented to help us celebrate a glorious evening of thanksgiving to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. God has truly blessed First Baptist in so many ways. God has given us a pastor who loves God and is a true servant, a first lady who is a prayer warrior, a beautiful sanctuary, a loving church family and a beautiful fellowship hall. To God be the glory for all that He has done. The was a very special time for the pastor, first lady, members and friends of FBCSP. It was especially significant to our pastor because it was the twentieth year of service to our church and membership. Romans 10:14,15 and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how

12 Humor Good for the soul V O L U M E 2, I S S U E 1 P A G E 12 Puzzle Food for the brain B i b l e B r a i n T e a s e r I once made a remark about the hidden books of the Bible. It was a lulu, kept people looking so hard for facts, and for others it was a revelation. Some were in a jam, especially since the names of the books are not capitalized, but the truth finally struck home to numbers of readers. To others, it was a real job. We want it to be a most fascinating few moments for you. Yes, there will be some really easy ones to spot. Others may require judges to help them. I will quickly admit it usually takes a minister to find one of the 17, and there will be loud lamentations when it is found. A little lady says she brews a cup of tea so she can concentrate better. See how well you can compete. Relax now, for there really are the names of 17 books of the Bible in these sentences. (One preacher found 16 books in 20 minutes. It took him three weeks to find the seventeenth one.) With five eager readers now calling her mom, she s ready to write her own stories. Timika s bringing these tales out of her head and onto paper because of her experience in the creative writing program. Friends would read my work and tell me it s great, but now I know how to identify what s really working and what s not, says Timika, who served in the Army as a photojournalist. As a writer, I finally feel like I belong. After completing her military service, Timika earned both her B.A. and M.F.A. degrees from Rutgers Camden. She received the Ralph Johnson Bunche Distinguished Graduate Award for being an exceptional, full-time student. Named for the Nobel Peace Laureate, the award provided Timika with a $15,000 stipend plus tuition remission. I was humbled in receiving such an honor, Timika says. It allowed me to focus on my writing goals and shape my plans for my future in writing. She aims to publish her book-length thesis which features fiction inspired from her childhood, like the short story Della, borne of Timika s relationship with her grandmother. Timika is a former member of FBCSP. Remember our sick and shut-in with a prayer, a call or a visit. And the prayer of faith shall save the sick and the Lord shall raise him up. 14 Mine? Read: Malachi 3:1-18 Submitted by Sis. Brandi Diaz Have you ever tried to take a toy from a toddler? If so, then you know it s hardly worth the effort. Even though the child probably doesn t know where the toy came from, the words my and mine repeatedly resound. It s hers and no one else s. Mine. It s one of the first words we learn as children. No one has to teach us to be possessive. Hoarding comes naturally. Maybe we fear that we won t have what we need or that someone will take what we think rightfully belongs to us. Learning to share is so often the challenge. God instituted the concept of tithing during Moses time. Not only was it the way God provided for the Levites, but it was also a spiritual discipline to teach his people to rely on him. By giving God the first tenth of their produce, they acknowledged that all they had was from his hand. In this passage, God lamented that the people were robbing him by withholding their tithe. He asked them to test his generosity. And WOW! God can pass that test, opening the floodgates of heaven and pouring out so much blessing that there will not be enough room for it. With a return like that, who wouldn t want to give to God? But God doesn t ask us to give out of his own need or for what we receive in return. He asks us to give as a reflection of how generous he has been to us. He has, indeed, poured out mercy, forgiveness, provision and everything else we need. Jesus said, Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you (Luke 6:38). The Old Testament tithe was a requirement, but the New Testament offering is a test of the heart. Giving is not a duty but a joyous outpouring of gratitude. And giving is God s way of making us, his people, and a conduit of his love to other. The We Care Food Ministry celebrated it s 1 st anniversary on Nov. 18 th by providing 112 families in Southside Portsmouth with groceries for Thanksgiving. We give a generous Thank you to our church families who provided 57 turkeys for our distribution. You not only helped in providing a Thanksgiving meal but assisted in feeding each family for three additional days. Our mission has been met this year. E have shown 3,850 people, including widows, the homeless, unemployed due to lay-offs and single mothers struggling to make ends meet the caring love of God in the mist of their circumstance. This could not have been accomplished without the loving concern of Pastor Amlet and our administrative officials who supported the ministry prayerfully and financially. The smiles and words of gratitude received from the people we served let us know that we made a difference in their lives The ministry could not have functioned without the anointed and dependable staff of volunteers, who showed up week after week to stock, file and pack the products for distribution.
