1 Spreading the WORD to our Community! Message from Our Pastor & Minister Madelyn Montgomery In Matthew 5:13-20 Christians are called to be salt and light for Christ in the world. Why does he want us to be salt? In Jesus day, as in ours, they knew how important salt was. It is an essential mineral needed to keep our bodies functioning. Our muscles and our brain cannot work without salt in our diet. Life cannot be sustained without salt. Salt was also prized as a preservative. Without modern refrigeration the people preserved food by rubbing salt on it. In worship, salt was used as a purifier. My mother used to give me salt water to gargle when I had a sore throat. Salt is able to drive away infection; it heals and drives away decay. So salt symbolized the need to have all evil removed and to be pure before God. Jesus seemed mostly concerned about the flavor of our salt. Just like salt seasons food, the lives of Christians need to season the world. Through us, Jesus wants to spread the flavor of God s love to the world and expects us to use the salt in us to preserve his truth. In this passage, Jesus also calls us to be His light. It is not our own light that we shine, but the light of God reflected on us, just like the moon receiving light from the sun. So by God s Son-light we are able to glorify Him. Let us continue to use our salt and our light to help mankind. It was a lulu, kept people looking so hard for facts, and for others it was a revelation. Some were in a jam, especially since the names of the books are not capitalized, but the truth finally struck home to numbers of readers. To others, it was a real job. We want it to be a most fascinating few moments for you. Yes there will be some really easy ones to spot. Others may require judges to help them, I will quickly admit it usually takes a minister to find one of the 17, and there will be loud lamentations when it is found. A little lady says she brews a cup of tea so she can concentrate better. See how well you can compete. Relax now, for there really are the names of 17 books of the Bible in these sentences. (One preacher found 16 books in 20 minutes. It took him three weeks to find the seventeenth one.) Prince Hall Masons Honors Deacon John C. Harrison Most Worshipful Grand Master Roger C. Brown and thirty-seven Prince Hall Masons attended Mt. Moriah Baptist Church to honor District Deputy Grand Master (DDGM) John C. Harrison. Harrison, a 33 0 Mason, has been a member of the Fraternity since He served as DDGM for the thirtieth district (covering Culpeper, Warrenton, Leesburg, and Midland) for 14 years before resigning. Grand Master Brown was very pleased with the outstanding work of the DDGM and he honored Harrison by making him District Deputy Grand Master Emeritus. Special Guests, at the Church, for Harrison were his Daughters, Renee and Adriane, Brother, Frederick (Assistant District Grand Master from Lawrenceville), and Grandson, TJ. 3 Prince Hall Masons Honors (cont.) In honor of the occasion the Church was presented a check for $580 from the 30 th District for the Church s Building Fund. This was very special for Deacon Harrison and he thanked Pastor Montgomery, Chairman Calvin Cook, Grand Master Roger C. Brown and all present for making this a very special day for the old fellow. 4 A Message from First Lady Minister Madelyn Montgomery When Faith is put into Action! When we put faith into action we will quickly see the result God is a reality. We can never walk on water as well as we can never walk without Jesus, by our side. If you are in a boat and the boat turns over guess what, Jesus will keep you from drowning. When faith takes over, fear will move out. God gives us the confidence to do all things. We always should do our best to please God. In God we trust in all things let our life reflect Jesus. We are never disappointed when we follow His lead. Remember God is a reality. That s how I live my everyday life. For the Lord s word is true all His works are trustworthy. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Prayer for Peace O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love; for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen. Put God in Your Dreams Sermon by Rev. Montgomery Ask God to show you His dreams for your life. I am convinced that when God gives you a dream it is for your benefit and the benefit of others. God gives his dreams to men and women who will work to put those dreams in action. The great accomplishments of the world have come from dreamers that God had chosen. God is the source of all truth and wisdom. God dreamed that His people needed to read His word. So He gave John Guttenberg the dream of the printing press. God had a dream that his people needed to have light shown in the dark places of this world. So God gave Thomas Edison the dream of the electric light bulb. God had a dream that human kind needed a better mode of transportation than the horse and buggy. So God gave the dream of the automobile to Henry Ford and others. God had a dream that humans needed to span the great distance separating them. So God gave the dream of an airplane to the Wright Brothers. I believe God gives dreamers dreams to further the comfort and well-being of His people. Unknown 4

5 Don t Quit When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you re trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high, And you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit Rest if you must, but don t you quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns, as every one of us sometimes learns. And many a person turns about when they might have won had they stuck it out. Don t give up though the pace seems slow - You may succeed with another blow. Often the struggler has given up when he might have captured the victor s cup; And he learned too late when the night came down, How close he was to the golden crown. 6 Faith Information According to the U.S. Religious Landscape Survey, conducted in 2007 by Pew Research Center s Forum on Religion & Public Life, Black Americans are markedly more religious on a variety of measures than the U.S. population as a whole. It cited that 87% of Blacks (vs 83% of all American) are affiliated with a religion. It also found that 79% of Blacks (vs 56% overall) say that religion is very important in their life. Mt.
