1 OCTOBER 2016 O T H E B E L L S S T. M A R Y S The Reverend Jason A. Murbarger 20th Rector of St. Mary s Episcopal Church, Daytona Beach, FL.
2 Dear St. Mary s Family, For the past 16 months we have, together, prayed for the Search Committee every Sunday at both services. Many of us have prayed the prayer every day for the past 16 months and many of our family and friends have joined us in this prayer. I estimate that the prayer has been lifted up to God more that 24,000 times. To quote C. H. Spurgeon "Prayer can never be in excess." And in Matthew 21:22 All things, whatever you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive. On Sunday, September 25, 2016, I was delighted to announce to our congregation a Praise Report of great magnitude which began to unfold on August 30th when the vestry unanimously voted to offer a call to a candidate. The next day, September 1st, following approval from Bishop Gregory Brewer, I, as your representative, was honored to issue a very emotional call that was accepted on September 3rd, pending the signing of the Letter of Agreement. On September 15, the Letter of Agreement was signed by us and on Friday, September 23, I received the copy of the Letter of Agreement signed by Bishop Brewer thus finalizing 16 months of a very prayer-filled search process. I, and the members of the vestry are overjoyed to announce to you that by God s grace and God sgift of wisdom for the Search Committee to listen for His still small voice the Vestry feelsrichly blessed to be able to announce to you that The Reverend Jason A. Murbarger has been selected to be the 20th rector of St. Mary s Episcopal Church. Praise God! and Alleluia! We believe very strongly that Fr. Jason possesses many of the attributes that were expressed in the Parish Survey results. Fr. Jason, as he prefers to be addressed, is a wonderful man of God. As all of the references stated he is called to serve God. When you hear his story of how he came to the priesthood you, too, will be greatly moved... He is married to the beautiful Sharon, they have two sons, Jared and Jordan and a thirteen year old Chocolate Lab named Ranger. Fr. Jason was a seminarian at Nashotah House, coincidently, which is where many of our previous rectors went to seminary. While there he oversaw all seminary chapel services and in his senior year he was appointed by the Dean to oversee the Administration of the seminary. He was ordained to the priesthood on December 9, 2013 and for the past 3 years has been serving as Assistant Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Vero Beach. At Trinity his role, besides celebrating and preaching, was to oversee budget development, financial management, plant oversight and pastoral care. Fr. Jason also brings a wealth of knowledge from his secular experience along with a very deep and abiding faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. He has been involved in Cursillo, Faith Alive, Order of St. Luke, Prison Ministry, and Continuing Professional Education for Assisted Living. Continued.
3 .Continued He received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from The Citadel in Served as Director of Intelligence in the Air Force, Sumter, SC. and returned to the Citadel in 1995 as an Associate Professor in the Aerospace Dept. Following that he had a long and very successful career as a Commercial Real Estate Broker before getting kicked in the head by God, his expression, and called to the priesthood. As things stand now, Fr. Jason will begin his ministry with us on November 1. His first celebration of the Holy Eucharist will be November 6, which is All Saints Sunday. This, my dear friends, begins a brand new chapter in the history book of St. Mary s. As I think about Fr. Jason s new ministry at St. Mary s I think of the praise song there is a new day dawning and it is just around the bend... Coming in love, coming in joy, coming in peace. Thank you all for your support and have a blessed day...and yes...there is a new day dawning! Fran Dunn SEARCH COMMITTEE FINAL REPORT Sixteen months ago the Search Committee was tasked to bring a new rector to St. Mary s. They asked God to reveal His will, waited for His answer, and acted in accordance. Although this sounds simple, God does answer prayer and the group learned to hear God speak. As in the words of John Wesley, "Prayer is where the action is." We extend our appreciation to this dedicated group of St. Mary s members who have given of their time and talents for the past 16 months to make this moment possible. Shiela McKay- Vaughan, Jackie Block, Jamie Musselwhite, Claudia Forrester, Danielle Rogers and Fran Dunn. Someone once delivered a series of nevers to an adult Sunday School class. He said, never give up; never lose faith; never stop learning; never ignore an opportunity for personal spiritual growth and never, never stop praying. That defines this committee and their faithful service to a t! WELL DONE GOODAND FAITHFUL SERVANTS! And we thank you, our congregation, for your prayers and support throughout this process. Fran Dunn
4 STEWARDSHIP T HERE S A NEW DAY DAWNING A NEW DAY TO MAKE A COMMITMENT TO THE LORD A NEW DAYTO TAKE A GIANT STEP TOWARD SUPPORTING GOD WHO SUPPORTS US IN EVERYTHING, OUR ENTIRE BEING A NEW DAY TO UNDERSTAND THAT EVERYTHING WE POSSESS IS ON LOAN TO EACH OF US BY GOD. A NEW DAY TO GIVE BACK TO OUR CHURCH, WHICH IS THE FOUNDATION OF OUR PRECIOUS COMMUNITY OF LOVE AND SUPPORT A NEW DAY TO RE-EVALUATE OUR STATUS AS MEMBERS OF THIS COMMUNITY WHICH HOLDS US TOGETHER IN TIMES OF JOY AND IN TIMES OF SADNESS. A NEW DAY TO UNDERSTAND THAT WE NEED EACH OTHER, EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US, TO PRODUCE GROWTH AT ST. MARY S AND TO CARRY THE MESSAGE TO OUR DAYTONA COMMUNITY AND THE WORLD COMMUNITY. A NEW DAY TO CONSIDER SERIOUSLY THE IMPORTANCE OF TITHING AND THE CONSE- QUENCES OF THAT COMMITMENT REWARD BEYOND OUR WILDEST DREAMS, A MAG- NIFICANT AURA THAT GOD IS SMILING DOWN ON US BECAUSE WE ARE TRUSTING IN HIM TO CARE FOR OUR NEEDS DURING THIS NEW EXPERIENCE (FOR SOME) OF TITHING AND THE ABILITY TO INITIATE MORE PROGRAMS AND REACH OUT BEYOND OUR DOORS WHAT IS STEWARDSHIP? Stewardship is about being grateful, responsible stewards of the gifts we receive from God. The tradition of giving back to God and to the church comes from the Biblical practice of tithing, which means to give back a tenth of our earnings to God (Numbers 18:26). The Episcopal Church sees stewardship as more than simply contributing money to the church; it s also about contributing time and talents, and volunteering for ministry and mission. It s about reaching out to build relationships from a perspective of abundance instead of scarcity. THINK ABOUT IT! PRAY ABOUT IT! ***Each of the past three years of our stewardship campaigns has shown a slight increase from the previous year. Let us make it our goal this year to demonstrate such great trust in the Lord that we show our greatest support ever. Jackie Block LOOK FOR MORE WHEN FR. JASON ARRIVES THERE S A NEW DAY DAWNING
