1 THE BELLS OF ST. MARY S Dear St. Mary s family, MAY At its April meeting the vestry voted to accept a proposal from TYL Construction for the repairs/rebuild of the Lanai. This has been made possible by a generous gift from a member of our congregation and from the Andy Maxwell bequest. This work is scheduled to be done the first week of May. Lloyd Davis the owner of TYL, which stands for Thank You Lord, has asked that we keep them in our prayers: 1. For the Wisdom of the Contractor - that would be me (Lloyd Davis). I know that I need the Good Lord's help in LOTS of things, but probably wisdom more than any other. 2. For the Safety of the Men and Women doing the work - Even a small project like this one has plenty of opportunities for someone to get seriously hurt. 3. That the Good Lord would be glorified in everything said and done - This one by far is the most important of the three. Please add TYL to your prayers for the coming week. The Search Committee will have its first official meeting on May 5. Our first order of business will be to prepare a parish survey which every member will be asked to respond to via or snail mail. If we do not have a current address for you, it would be helpful if you would contact the church office with that information. Please keep in mind that this may take a couple of months. The time spent in preparation of the survey will be most beneficial as we move forward with the process. Most importantly, PLEASE continue to pray for your elected leaders, the vestry, as we strive to discern to where and to what our God is calling us. As we look forward: Thanks to your stewardship this year you have made it possible for the vestry to return the $25,000 we borrowed from our reserves to keep us afloat in We are richly blessed by you! Once the road construction is completed it is going to be vital that we have the church painted. If you have looked around the outside of the church you have noticed that St. Mary s is in desperate need of a paint job. Our A/C units are now 19 years old. If you have lived in Florida for very long you are aware that they have already outlived their expectancy. This will be a major expense. Because the city codes are changing and the fact that the units are on the roof and will require lifting equipment to replace it would be prudent to replace all the units at one time. I mention these issues/needs to you so that you are aware that there are many ways for you to be helpful with your designated gifts to these important projects. Our beloved 132 year old church is and will continue to be in constant need of repairs and maintenance. Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Fran Dunn

2 Outreach May 2015 Outreach Ministry Report Month of April 2015 The St. Mary s Outreach Ministry has been busy planning continued 2015 activities and projects. Stay tuned to the monthly Bells and the weekly bulletins for some important collections and events which can help us bring comfort, nourishment, compassion and to help ensure justice for all citizens in our area who may be challenged or facing struggles. St.Mary s parishioners are always so generous with their time, talents and resources --you are very appreciated in all you do and we thank you. On March 16 th, the FAITH Organization held their Annual Action Assembly and has been successful in persuading the Daytona City Council to agree to remove the arrest question from the City job application. Danielle Rogers of the Outreach Committee attended the event. Also at this meeting, five of the seven County Council members voted to provide land and money for the homeless shelter. Help is still needed to get this monumental task accomplished and parish member support is appreciated. More information from Danielle, our FAITH representative, will be forthcoming as this project progresses. She is looking forward to meeting and speaking with you. The Love Basket Collection, which continues until Thursday, April 30 th is in process at the time of this writing and plans are in action to donate toiletries, cosmetics, cosmetic bags, creams, lotions, beautiful scarves etc. to Palmetto House and the Domestic Abuse Council for distribution among the female residents in honor of Mother s Day. A big thank you for your generosity. Thus far, we have collected over $400 of cosmetics and personal items for this collection and the amount is still growing. The HUM food collection has netted a generous amount of food and pantry goods this month for use both at the food pantry Bay Street and the Bridge of Hope feedings at North Street. St. Mary s Outreach is issuing their first check to HUM this year in the amount of $250 to buy food for their pantry and for Bridge of Hope. Next month, we will provide a donation to Star Center, the HUM shelter for women and children. Food Needed for HUM for May: Jams, Jellies, Crackers, Peanut Butter, Cereal, Vienna Sausages in Pop top Cans, Soups and Breakfast Cereal. For the Bridge of Hope: Food service sized cans of chicken or tuna. Below, Deb Konkos, Outreach Committee Minister, donates a regulation major league Louisville Slugger Award which was presented to her husband Michael for being a U.S. Surgical Corporation (Covidien) Heavy Hitter for Star Performance in 2001, to Linda Misko of the Florida Memorial Medical Center s Education Dept. benefitting a children s junior league baseball team in Santo Domingo. The league training is to assist the children in the program to become U.S major league baseball players. This bat, along with some children s batting helmets, greatly needed by the team, were donated by Miguel Berrios. The items were transported to the country last week. As you can see, the items were greatly appreciated. Respectfully submitted, Deb Konkos Outreach Ministry

3 Volunteer Survey Results Though there was not a large number of participants in the survey, between this and the results of the Ministries fair we were able to determine where the focus of interest lies in St. Mary s present ministries. in addition we were able to discern a couple of other ministries to explore in the near future. The greatest interest was expressed in volunteering for outreach ministries and serving in worship ministries such as lectors, acolytes and ushers. Individuals signed up to participate in almost all ministry areas, The list was distributed to the ministry leaders. And indeed we have added to the following ministries or have interest shown: 4 new people to Outreach, 4 new Ushers, 2 to Pastoral Care, 7 Oblationers, 5 have expressed interest in upkeep of the memorial garden, 2 in being a part of the Men s Group, 4 office volunteers, 2 in Altar Guild, 3 in Fellowship/ Hospitality, 3 have joined the Choir, 2 in counting, 2 in Altar Guild. A ministry worth exploring is In-Home Bible Studies as mentioned by 4 individuals and several were interested in Sunday School with the addition of more Children. It is interesting to note that there are approximately 83 individuals who are involved in the worship ministries (Choir, LEM s, Acolytes, Ushers, Oblationers, Altar and Flower Guilds, Lectors, Crucifers, Prayers of the People. We are blessed, Take me out to the ball game Danielle Rogers is willing to organize a trip to the ball park in June to watch the Yankees or the Mets. Before doing so your input is requested: #1 Are you interested in going to the game? #2 Do you wish to have dinner at the park, at the church or would you like to skip an organized dinner altogether. Please express your pleasure to Danielle as soon as possible.

4 Love Baskets for Women May 1, 2015 LOVE BASKETS The St. Mary s Outreach Committee is repeating the Love Baskets for Women program for 2015 for the ladies of Palmetto House and Domestic Abuse Council in honor of Mother s Day. There will be a meeting on Friday, May 1st at 1:00 pm in Palmer Hall to assemble the cosmetics into gift baskets. Come join the fun! The HUM food collection for the month of May is jams, jellies, crackers, peanut butter, cereals, Vienna Sausages in pop-top cans, soups. 6 BUILDING At last we have found the perfect contractor for the lanai renovation. We will be using Lloyd Davis and TYL (Thank You Lord) Construction. Some may remember the wonderful job he did on the elevator. We are blessed to have him back again. The surface of the lanai will be composite Trex Deck in a mist gray color. The construction will begin sd soon as the materials arrive and he can schedule us. He hopes to begin on a Monday and be finished by the next Sunday in order to spare everyone the inconvenience of closing the lanai access to the church. We will pray for an easy job with no complications to delay this long awaited fix. The Trex material is not a wood surface but will appear to be wood. This is the same material that is used in our parks on walkways and decks. It will last for approximately 30 years, God willing. The under deck supports are either being replaced or repaired and all will be water proofed. The railings will be reinforced as they are reattached. I am humbled by the generosity of a church angel and a gift left to the church by our dear Andy Maxwell. When the lanai is complete we will have a dedication and affix a plaque to the lanai in grateful thanks to Andy s memory. We will also be addressing the damage to a few ceiling tiles in the church bathroom due to heavy rains. This should not interfere with the use of the facilities. & God has blessed us so much and we are working very hard to solve the air conditioning inconsistencies in the church...but, as we all are aware, our system is greatly stressed due to its age, and I would suggest you bring along a sweater if you feel too cold. Remember the choir and Fr. Bob and all who serve at the altar have three layers of clothing...theirs and the vestments, and they feel the heat mightily when the church is too warm. We will also have prayer shawls available at the back of the church which the ushers will bee glad to bring to you if you wish to borrow one for the service. God bless you all and thank you for your support. Marge Underwood Building and Grounds GROUNDS
