SEPTEMBER 2016 O T H E B E L L S S T. M A R Y S
Dear St. Mary s family, The article below was written in August of 1996 by The Rev. Alexander Greene for Journey Through the Word. I think it is as relevant today as it was when he wrote it. The scripture verse he references is Hebrews 11:32 12:6. Privileges A privilege is a freedom or opportunity which has been given us and which we cannot claim is ours by right. This writer recalls being in a class taught by Reginald Fuller, a noted New Testament scholar, in which he said that it s a privilege to pray the Lord s Prayer. When Terry Waite was seemingly bout to be executed he was permitted to pray that prayer. There are privileges we take too much for granted. How many Americans and Canadians do not bother to vote in elections? The joy of black South Africans when for the first time they were able to choose their leaders would have reminded us that freedom to cast one s ballot is a precious privilege. Many church members take their Christian faith for granted. They have their children done and come to worship occasionally without considering that baptism and church membership have been bought with the blood of Christ and the witness of godly people, even unto death, through the ages. That is a message of today s Bible selection. And there is life itself. Do we thank God for the experience of waking in the morning and for the opportunity which a new day brings? The ordeal of Terry Waite tells us that life is a privilege we must never take for granted. Prayer: Lord, help me to live and pray as Jesus did. Reflection & Discussion: Think of a privilege you have been given and failed to appreciate at the time. Discuss the notion that worship, prayer, and practice of your faith is, indeed, a privilege. Give thanks. Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Fran
SEARCH COMMITTEE UP-DATE The Search Committee has now completed the reference checks, in-house interviews, and on-site interviews as was mentioned in last month s Up-Date. A meeting has been scheduled for the vestry to meet and discuss where God is leading us. Once the decision to offer a call to a candidate is made we notify the diocese for approval from Bishop Brewer. Then, and only then, are we permitted to contact the candidate with our offer of a call. The candidate then has a given length of time to discern if St. Mary s is where he/she is being called by God. Your prayers are very important. Please continue to pray for the wisdom of discernment for St. Mary s, the search process and the selection of a candidate! In June of 2015 the Vestry of St. Mary s Episcopal Church, Daytona Beach, Florida adopted the following policy concerning the practices and procedures for assisting persons requesting financial help. POLICY TO ADDRESS PANHANDLING PRACTICES ON ST. MARY S PROPERTY 1. Members of the congregation are strongly requested to not give money out to persons panhandling. 2. All monies and other forms of assistance are to be distributed by the rector only. 3. If a member feels called to offer/provide monetary assistance to a person soliciting, they are requested to do so by providing the funds to the rector and the rector will then distribute themoney to the designated person.
WALKING THE LABYRINTH Recently St. Mary s was extended an invitation by our Senior Warden, Fran Dunn, to meet together at one of several labyrinth stations in the Daytona area to pray and reflect on our lives and the life of St. Mary s. It was a very powerful and moving experience for each of the participants. History of the Labyrinth. The Labyrinth dates back 4000 years and was used to heighten awareness of the human condition as an aid to psychological and spiritual growth. It is an ancient symbol relating to wholeness. The classical labyrinth has an association with Christianity. It all but disappeared until the Middle Ages brought renewed interest and a more complex design-an eleven circuit, four quadrant design which forms a cross with a rosette in the center signifying enlightenment. The Labyrinth is a metaphor for life s journey, a circuitous path to the center and back a journey to the center of yourself and back out into the world with a broader understanding of who you are, being mindful of your life experiences and your spiritual journey. It has long been used as a meditation and prayer tool with the idea of coming closer to God. Walking The Labyrinth You are on a journey, a journey toward the light that is God. A journey towards the center of the labyrinth and out again. A journey toward God and out again. A journey of receiving and then giving. Walk with expectancy. As you journey, reflect on what you see, hear, think. Expect to discover the wonderful, the fantastic. As you move toward the center of the labyrinth, confess and let go of things that hinder your relationship with God. As you journey, unmask yourself, peel away the layers grow by subtraction. Prepare your inner self to meet with God. The turns of the labyrinth can represent the changes and passages in your life.
We are moving forward in our Foster a Family project and all hands on deck are required. We are trying to locate adequate housing and work, for our family, Susan and Jerry. In addition we are asking every member of the congregation to help in any way they can, be it prayer, odd jobs, knowing of a job, toiletries, new under garments for both, an apartment etc. As you can see the list is long but not overwhelming. We as a community can help make the lives of these two good people better. Look into your hearts and ask God what he would have you do. Thank you Danielle Rogers Missions and Outreach, chair CURSILLO MEMBERS AND FRIENDS Friday, Sept 16, 2016 ST. It then follows, as a matter of course, that it is his duty to carry his Christian code of morals to the polls and vote them...if Christians should vote their duty to God at the polls, they would carry every election, and do it with ease...it would bring about a moral revolution that would be incalculably beneficent. It would save the country. Collier s Magazine (September 2, 1905)
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2016 Come for fun, food, and line dancing 6:00 PM - sign-up in Palmer Hall $15 per person NIGHT Make A Friend, Be a Friend, Bring a Friend To Jesus Co-Ed Cursillo #123 Cursillo for many is a renewal and nurturing of faith; for others it is a beginning into knowing and truly feeling the authentic love of Jesus Christ in our personal lives. In essence it is a mini course in Christianity. And it is an experience you will never forget. If you are interested in going to Cursillo, particularly this one coming up, please contact Danielle Rogers, Kathy Munroe or Rachel Ramsey, to get the process started. Even if you are unable to go to this Cursillo weekend, fill out the paper work now for the future. CONGRATULATIONS TO: KATHY MUNROE and RACHEL RAMSEY who are blessed to have been selected to work on the team of about 30 Cursilliesta s (Cursillo Members) for this up-coming Co-Ed Cursillo on October 6-9. We at St. Mary s are grateful to have these two beautiful Christian ladies to represent our church in a ministry that is close to their hearts and ours. PRAY! PRAY! PRAY! for Kathy and Rachel as they prepare for and embark on this mission of spreading Jesus intimate love and compassion to all those who are team members and candidates.
