1 ISIS SHRINE NEWS Situated in the Oasis of Salina, Desert of Kansas POTENTATES MESSAGE: January 2019 Volume # 1 This year as my position of the Potentate for the ISIS Shrine Temple is coming to an end I realize; not only how fast it came, but that I haven t had the time to complete all the things that I wanted to accomplish this year. What I do feel good about is the Divan behind me are really qualified to continue the direction we have been moving the last several years. It is that continued improvement year after year that will keep our Temple violable to our mission, so we can take care of the children in North West and Central Kansas. The 45 kids that we are taking care of appreciate the work we do to keep the Shrine active in our jurisdiction. This is why every Noble does what he does; to help children that need our hospitals so they can live a life better because of our care. We need a strong financial Temple to facilitate our mission. The financial improvements we have made this year has been a great start and I believe we have accomplished a lot. We still have several projects that we need funding for, like The 100 K Club; commit $100 for three years to improve the financial health of the Temple. We have raised over $60,000 with The Building Mortgage Fund, and still need $130,000 to pay off the building mortgage. We also started the project titled, The Building Maintenance Fund and this year we are approaching $25,000 expenses and still have a parking lot issue. The most important fund is our Travel Fund, a tax deductible fund that supports all we stand for. It is supported so far by memorials from Nobles and there widows. Please be generous to our funds and help raise money for those funds. Our membership is dropping fast as the average age keeps getting higher and higher. A few years ago we were over 1500 and in 2025 it is predicted to be 700. That is why the 2025 Committee s report was so important. Their report during the October Stated Meeting gave us their direction on how we were going to operate our Temple at 700 members. As of this year, to continue as we are we need another 300 members. We are operating beyond our means and we have to raise our income. The building is consuming to much of our budget and was recommended to sell it to get financially stable. This will have to be a vote of the Nobles. Is there another way? Do we have to sell our home and operate out of an office? The Divan has heard a lot of concern that this is the wrong direction. However, the facts tell us we have too change. If we can get Nobles working on ways to save the Temple by helping to pay off the mortgage, fund the maintenance, and join the 100K Club, we can save our Temple, but we need more response from you in accomplishing these Fund goals to support our Temple. Instead of saying I don t want you to sell the building, contribute to these funds to save it. When you became a Shriner you vowed to support our temples of mercy with spirit, time, talent and means. Now is the time to help us. The culture has started to change from our Clubs to our Temple and we need to continue for support our Temple to meet tomorrows needs of our philanthropy, Shriners Hospital for Children. NEW YEARS EVE PARTY DOORS OPEN: 7PM ENTERTAINMENT: 8PM The price will be $60 a person and includes endless finger foods, until they are gone, entertainment, 2 free drinks, and party favors. 2 MESSAGE FROM THE ISIS SHRINE CHIEF RABBAN Greetings Nobles and Ladies, 2018 has rapidly come to an end and with that a new Divan has been elected and new group of people will be showing up with new responsibilities. I would like to express my great appreciation for our 2018 Potentate Illus. Sir Mark Smith and his Lady Cindy. Mark and Cindy have worked very hard over the last year and have laid a lot of ground work out for the future of Isis Shrine. Your Divan has a better understanding of the finances and the needs of the temple now and it is now time to get back to basics. Throughout 2019 your Divan is going to concentrate on Membership very hard. We have to sustain the membership we have and the need for members that have slipped away to come back is imperative more now than ever. Our numbers are falling and the predictions of the future are grim at best. Your Divan is going to also concentrate on the fund raisers we will have next year. We would like to try and have those fund raisers paid for in advance so the monies generated will be solely profit. This will be a difficult task but this program has already been put into place and we are starting to get annual sponsorships throughout our jurisdiction. My belief is if we have corporate sponsorships throughout the year it will offset our circus and other fund raisers through the year making it possible to generate more income. Along with this we still need to have every Noble and his Ladies support through the purchase of circus tickets. The Sportsman Event held as Isis Shrine is going to have a whole new look also. It will be a true Sportsman Event which means there will be other items listed rather than just guns. I would like to see a huge turnout for this event this upcoming year. Installation of the 2019 Officers will be on January 18 at the temple and I hope to see a record turnout for this event. I am very excited about this next year and look forward to working with every Noble and their Ladies as well. Let s band together and get Isis Shrine back on track so we can have a great year in 2019 and for many years to come. Very Truly Yours, Russ Ingle and my Lady Connie MESSAGE FROM THE ISIS SHRINE ASSISTANT RABBAN Greetings Nobles and Ladies, As our year comes to an end, Lady Valerie and I would like to thank everyone for your support this past year. We hope you had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The last couple of months have been very busy. We went to Midian Shrine for Fall Ceremonial. There we took two new Nobles in our ISIS Shrine. It was a very good day working with the Nobles of Midian Shrine. We participated in the festivities and also their parade. Lady Valerie and I have attended several Club meetings around the area these past couple of months. On December 1st we spent the day in Salina along with many other Nobles. We were at Central Mall for Christmas Fantasy. I would like to thank all of you who showed up to represent our Temple and wearing your Fez. It looked really good seeing so many Shriners in the mall. That evening we were at the Temple for our annual ISIS Shine Christmas party. Even though the weather was not pleasant, we still had a great turn out. The entertainment was excellent, and there were more than one hundred Nobles and Ladies in attendance. It was a great night of fellowship within our building and a great dinner of ribeyes and all the sides prepared by Scott County Shrine Club. A big thank you to all who helped with the preparations for a wonderful evening. Our next major event was our Temple elections. Again we had a great turn out. I would like to thank everyone for their support and believing in me to be a part of the Temple leadership. Lady Valerie and I would like to extend a great big thank you to all who came out for dinner and brought toys. There were a large number of toys donated to be taken to the St Louis Hospital. We also would like to thank all the clubs who collected toys and brought them to be donated. We brought a huge box from the Russell Shrine Club. A big thank you to our home club. Looking forward to seeing everyone for Installation on January 18. We will also be having our annual Memorial Service for all the Nobles who have been lost this past year to the Black Camel. Remember to continue supporting your local Blue Lodge. That is where we all began as we were raised to the Degree of A Master Mason. Fraternally yours Darrell Ryan Asst. Rabban. 3 RECORDS CORNER Where did 2018 go? As the year started, the Divan was faced with many challenges, and we worked together to make the best educated decisions that we could, while keeping the interest of the Temple and its Nobles in mind. Thank you to all of the Nobles and Ladies who supported us throughout the year and worked to keep the ISIS Shrine moving in a positive direction. Congratulations to Illustrious Sir Mark Smith and First Lady Cindy on a successful year. Thank you for your continued dedication to this outstanding organization and Shriners Hospitals for Children. December 1, 2018 a Christmas Party was held and had 112 Nobles attend, even though the weather did not want to cooperate. There was entertainment throughout the night and a wonderful steak and chicken breast dinner was prepared by the Scott City Shrine Club. The Temple was beautifully decorated and there was a raffle that offered many people the ability to do some early Christmas shopping. Thank you to all of the cooks, people who decorated, and to the companies and Nobles who donated their time and generosity to having such a great raffle selection. A Stated Meeting and Elections were held on December 14, and your elected 2019 Divan members are: Potentate: Illustrious Sir Russ Ingle w/ Lady Connie Chief Rabban: Darrell Ryan w/ Lady Valerie Assistant Rabban: Alex Leslie w/ Lady Donna High Priest and Prophet: Russ Kontas w/ Lady Gretta Oriental Guide: Brian Riedel w/ Lady Lisa Treasurer: Gary Kay Recorder: Casey Flinn w/ Lady Megan Installation of the elected Divan and Annual Meeting will be January 18, Dinner will be served around 6:00 pm and will cost $15.00 per person. It will consist of roast beef, baked chicken, twice baked potato casserole, green beans with onions and bacon, salad, roll, and Texas sheet cake. There will be water, tea and coffee at no extra charge, and of course camels milk is always available. Please RSVP by January 11, 2019 so we can get a good count to the caterer. The Annual Meeting will be held at 7:00 pm with Installation shortly after. The installation portion is open to the public, so if you would like to invite friends and family to be part of this celebration, please do. At the time of publication of this newsletter, we had 1104 Nobles, and still had 440 Nobles who owe for 2019 dues, and some of them are in arrears for 2017 and December 31, 2018, over 70 Nobles will be suspended due to failure to pay dues. If you have not paid your dues please do so at your earliest convenience. If you know a Noble who has not paid his 2019 dues and/or is in arrears for , please talk to them to see if they could pay in full to stay in good standings with the Temple. These dues are vital to keeping the ISIS Shrine operating day in and day out. INPATIENT REHABILITIOATION: JOSH S JOURNEY Fourteen-year-old Josh, from Worcester, Massachusetts, had an accident while using his powered wheelchair at school. Josh, who has cerebral palsy, often requires some assistance from others, but his injuries left him unable to move about and care for himself as much as he did before the accident. He needed intensive rehabilitation therapy to help improve his mobility and reduce his dependence on others, and he needed to achieve this rather quickly. Josh was slated to start high school in just a few months and he did not want anything to prevent him from getting there. With that goal in mind, Josh s family looked for a rehabilitation program that would provide the multiple therapies he needed, in a structured environment guided by an interdisciplinary team of experienced professionals. They chose to bring him to Shriners Hospitals for Children Springfield. The inpatient rehabilitation program at Shriners Hospitals for Children Springfield is the only one of its kind in western Massachusetts. We provide coordinated child- and family-focused care for children up to age 18 who have suffered an injury or illness resulting in disability. Our program was created for patients who are well enough to be discharged from an acute hospital, but still need to rehabilitate to maximize quality of life and live as independently as possible at home, school and within the community, said Program Director Sheryl L. Moriarty, MOT, OTR/L, CDRS. Patients participate in a minimum of three hours of combined physical, occupational and/or speech therapy five days a week, using state-of-the-art rehabilitation equipment not common in other programs. When not in therapy, patients are monitored around the clock by pediatric nurses who specialize in rehabilitative care. Spacious private rooms are equipped with Wi- Fi and entertainment technology, and offer a sleeping option to parents who choose to stay with their child overnight. Just steps away, a sun-filled atrium invites patients and families to enjoy toys, games and technology appropriate for all ages and abilities. Josh received three hours of physical and occupational therapy five days a week, said pediatric physiatrist Kerstin Sobus, M.D., the medical director for the inpatient rehabilitation program. He frequently used the Zero G, a dynamic body-weight support and fall protection device, to work on his ambulation. Within the first 10 days, he was already supporting 50 percent of his body weight, which was a great gain. In occupational therapy, Josh improved his independence, performing activities of daily living such as eating, brushing his teeth and transferring from his wheelchair to a chair. Thanks to all of Josh s hard work in the inpatient rehabilitation program, the most significant transfer Josh made over the summer was to life as a high school freshman back home! To inquire about inpatient rehabilitative care for your child or to make a referral, contact clinical liaison Susan Tapases, RN, BSN, at My lady Megan and I would like to say thank you to everyone who supported us in There have been many changes that we have had to adapt to, and the support of the Nobility has allowed us to do our best to be successful in handle them. Thank you, Nobles and Ladies, for your hard work and dedication to this wonderful fraternity and all that it stands for. Because of you, we are able to continue doing what we meant to do, which is making sure children get the greatest health care, no matter their family s ability to pay. Casey Flinn Recorder

4 MEMO FROM MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE We started the campaign to retain 71 Nobles who have not paid their 2017 & 2018 dues, and here are the results through the beginning of December We have 21 who have decided on being suspended for non-payment of dues. 7 Nobles have paid their dues and will remain Shriners. 3 Nobles have begun a payment plan arranged by the Temple office. 2 Nobles have taken a journey on the Black Camel across the cold sands of the desert. Shrine Imperial has sent a Final Notice to the remaining 38 Nobles of their impending suspension. The committee is making a last ditch effort at making phone calls to these Nobles with the hope that our combined efforts can get these Nobles to retain their membership. In addition, each Shrine Club has been sent this list of 38 Nobles in the hope that they know someone on this list and that they can contact and convince them to stay with The ISIS Shrine. During this year all the members of the committee have been focused on the retention of past due Nobles. Next year we will assign each member of the committee to a specific task such as Recruitment, Retention, Restoration and Relationships. The committee currently consists of Russell Kontas, Galen Elliott, Bob Short, Darrin Deatherage and Brian Elliott. We need more involvement in the activities of the Temple to make it a vibrant and growing concern. If every Shrine Club would get a member of their organization to become a member of the committee it would go a long way toward giving us some fresh outlook on what it s going to take to get us growing again. OTTAWA COUNTY SHRINE CLUB The November meeting of the Ottawa Country Shrine club was held November 12, at the Scout Hall in Minneapolis. President, Bob Johnson called the meeting to order with 36 members and guests present. Jim Kay gave the prayer, and The Pledge of Alliance was recited before a fried fish dinner. Kevin and Linda Blochlinger prepared the delicious cod fish. Side dishes and desserts were provided by the ladies. Those in attendance were: Gerald Peterson, Past Potentate 2006; Louis Slavik, Past Potentate 2016; John Gilpin, Emeritus Recorder; Gary Kay, Treasurer; High Priest and Prophet Alex Leslie. Larry Bertrand thanked everyone for supporting our Shrine Bowl candidate for He has participated the past 3 years and is a Minneapolis high school student. The funding for this student to attend, was made possible by joint contributions from Minneapolis Blue Lodge #143 and the Ottawa County Shrine Club. Election of Officers was held. The following Nobles will be installed and their duties will start in January, President Louis Slavik; Vice President John Gilpin; Secretary/Treasurer Dick Belden. Alex Leslie discussed the upcoming Spring Ceremonial to be held in Scott City. Also a discussion about circus procedures and circus tickets. ISIS membership chairman, Russ Kontas, spoke to the group concerning the need to increase membership by bringing new candidates into our mason lodges and then into the Shrine. Russ also announced that he will be running for the Divan position of High Priest and Prophet for IMPORTANT CIRCUS INFORMATION The circus will be here before you know it. With their hard work this year s circus should be bigger and better than ever! MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE UPDATES With approximately 75% of our membership aged we are in trouble. We may lose between 60 and 80 members in Shrine International shows that only about 30% of Masons in Kansas are Shriners. That means that in order for us to reverse the trend of the last 15 years we must both make Masons and or convert 300 of them to show a growth of 100 Nobles in our Temple. And we must do this every year for the foreseeable future. It is not impossible to do this. What will make it possible are the concerted efforts of all of us. We have started to enlist both Shrine Clubs and Blue lodges in this effort. Here are the Shrine Clubs and Blue Lodges (including the Coordinator) who ve committed to growing both organizations. North West Shrine Club Bob Short Scott City Shrine Club Scott Lundgren Logan County Shrine Club Gary Runnalls Ottawa County Shrine Club Bob Johnson Minneapolis Lodge #143 John Swagerty South Solomon SC Russell Ingle Manhattan Shrine Club David Davis Membership growth is the key to survival of both Blue Lodges and the Shrine in Kansas. You must be a part of this effort. Here s a quote for this month: The past is the past. It s now up to us to sustain our own culture. We only lose what we fail to nurture. 6 Mickie Named Chicago Bears Magellan Champion of the Game Upon meeting 11-year-old Mickie, her sweet laugh and can-do attitude are evident. Mickie was born with Pierre Robin syndrome, a congenital condition involving facial anomalies. When she was less than 1, an in-home speech-language pathologist suggested that Mickie see specialists at Shriners Hospitals for Children Chicago. During an appointment, Mickie was also diagnosed with low muscle tone, scoliosis and kyphosis (an excessive outward curvature of the spine). Following halo traction treatment in 2011, Mickie had her first spine surgery at the Chicago Shriners Hospital. Spinal growing rods were implanted along her spinal column to help straighten the curve as she grows. Mickie has had several subsequent surgeries that have greatly reduced her spinal curve. Since then, Mickie and her family have been ambassadors for the Chicago Shriners Hospital, sharing their story with community groups, at hospital events and even walking in the annual Medinah Ladies Fashion Show in Oakbrook, Illinois. On December 9, Mickie represented Shriners Hospitals for Children Chicago as the Magellan Champion of the Game at the Chicago Bears vs. Los Angeles Rams NFL game at Solider Field. Magellan Corporation partners with the Bears to grant hospital patients an exciting game-day opportunity. Mickie and her family watched players warm up from the sidelines before the game, were brought on the field by mascot Staley Da Bear and projected on the jumbotron during the first quarter of the game. We agree with the Bears and Magellan Corporation that indeed, Mickie is a champion! Mickie s mother said her surgeon, Kim Hammerberg, M.D., gave Mickie her life back through all the great care provided to her. In her free time Mickie enjoys hanging out with friends, playing the trumpet and piano, and of course, rooting for Chicago sports teams. NORTHWEST SHRINE CLUB Just a highlight of Northwest Shrine Club functions for We have donated $500 to Sherman County Genesis, $500 to Wallace County, and $500 to ISIS Temple for Christmas toys for the children in the hospital in St. Louis. We have also donated over $10,000 to ISIS Temple for the building fund this past year. Bought 2-50# bags of peanuts and donated them to Genesis for the Christmas food gift boxes to be given out the Saturday prior to Christmas, (over 100 food boxes) donated the other bag to the Lowell Coleman Post VFW for Christmas candy bags given out to children while seeing Santa at the VFW. We are also sponsoring and sending a High School Junior, Kerrigan Rudolph, to St. Louis and have donated in excess of $2,000 to date to the family for travel expense. We have had her talk about her experiences at the Hospital at our Shrine Golf Tourney in July, and the last 2 Shrine meetings. December 17 th will be her 3 rd trip to the hospital and she is doing well. We have sponsored many children form NW Kansas and our Club does not send the bills into the Temple for a 50% reimbursement, we pay for all expenses at 100% from our Travel Fund.
