District 29 will be the Orange County Stars. MEMBERSHIP It s that time again when membership dues is upon us. Please help us meet our goals and send in your dues as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation. EVENTS Our Independence Day Potluck was a fun time for all who attended. There certainly was a wonderful variety of yummy dishes for everyone to enjoy and Commander, Jim Sewell, did a super job under fire with the burgers and dogs. We were honored to have 1st District Orange County Board of Supervisor Janet Nguyen, and two Garden Grove City Councilmen join in the festivities. Also, the Orange County Register came by and took pictures of the group and some other candid photos that appeared in a full page color article in the Register on 7/10. You can go to the website at to view the slide show. The article was a great boost for our Post. DINNERS Our regular 1 st Friday of every month dinner is cancelled for August due to scheduling conflicts, and many members on vacation and low attendance. However, mark your calendar for Monday, August 25, when the Auxiliary will be having a dinner/dance with a 20 piece swing band. Dinner will be served from 5:00 6:30 p.m. and the music and dancing from 7:00 9:30. The price will be $8.00 per person. So grab your partners, friends, and neighbors, put your dancing shoes on, and come on down for some great food and music! Friday, September 5, the menu will be Hobo Stew. You won t want to miss this dinner as we have some special guests lined up. So mark those calendars so you can come and meet them and join in the fun. Remember these dinners are our main fundraiser monthly for our valued programs for our veterans and our youth and we greatly appreciate your support. 3 Page 3 American Legion Riders Chapter 555 So man na onal motorc cling publica ons are tou ng the beginning of riding season. Riding season? We are luck here in Southern California that our riding season lasts all ear long. We ride as a Chapter and we ride with small groups of friends from within the Chapter and we ride solo. The one thing we must alwa s remember is that whenever we ride, and are wearing the Chapter 555 vest, we are a ver visual arm of the American Legion and the American Legion Riders. People who know no be er assume that we are a group of people straight out of a 1950 s/60 s motorc cle gang movie. t is up to us to make sure we do not confirm that misguided idea. We do good work, and as people get to know who we are, the come to realize that. Let us alwa s conduct ourselves in a manner that brings credit to the American Legion and the American Legion Riders. n Saturda, Jul 12, a ended the American Legion Riders/Department of California, Area 5 Presidents mee ng. t was a good mee ng, with most of the Area Chapters represented. A ma or area of conversa on was the support of our Posts b the Chapters. Vice President, Mick Sobczek encouraged all the Chapter Presidents to let there Chapters know that it is in our best interest to support the Post. Show up at Post mee ngs, dinners, and at all Post ac vi es. f there is a Dinner, go to it. ne area that seems to escape the general membership of the Post is that the Riders is not a separate func on from the Legion. n the State of California, we are a recognized program, supported b The Department of California. This is not the case in ever Department, but it is in ours. The also seem to miss that we are made up of members of the Legion, the Auxiliar and the Son s, as equals. No other program of the Legion accepts members of the other programs, simpl because the are members of a Legion program. ther things were discussed, and will discuss those at the next Chapter mee ng. n the da was at the Presidents Mee ng, several of our Chapter members rode to Buena Park to a end a breakfast and informa onal mee ng regarding the proposed Veterans Cemeter at the former MCAS l Toro. look forward to hearing what was learned at our next mee ng. Finall, on Sunda, Jul 13, was honored to be asked to nstall the fficers at Chapter 716.
4 Page 4 The Marauder Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 555 Comrades, Here it is only August and it's already looking like it's going to be an exciting year, with a new Post Commander and new ideas we are going to hit the ground running. There will be a lot of new events happening, so keep watching the Marauder for the dates. It is also time for renewal and we have the new cards now, get a hold of me or George Willis for your cards. We will be having another day of fun on the 10th with Wrestling, It is loads of fun for the entire family and the event is a fund raiser for the Sons Squadron. This next Wrestling event will be for one particular Sons member, Nickie Eustace our new 2nd Vice Commander. Nickie has just won a spot on the USA Pankration Team and will be competing in Russia this November. (Pankration is a mixed Martial Arts competition). If you would take a minute of your time to read this article I think you will understand how proud we are of Nickie. ALBERT E. SCHWAB POST 555, MIDWAY CITY, CA. SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION WINS SPOT ON USA PANKRATION TEAM AND WILL REPRESENT THE U.S. IN RUSSIA, NOVEMBER 2014 As Commander of a Squadron I have met and worked with many fine people, occasionally you are privileged enough to meet an exceptional individual. I am honored to say that I have an individual in my Squadron who is just that, exceptional. A year or so ago a soft spoken, wellmannered young man came in with his father, Nickie and Michael Eustace to join the Legion and Nickie the Sons. As always we were glad to have them. Nickie soon became acting Sargent of Arms and is now 2 nd Vice Commander. Nickie was perfect for Sargent at Arms since at 13 years old he had already been 2 times California State, 4 time National Champion and 2 times Allstar Pankration Champion so keeping order should be no problem. Much to our surprise while we were all at Convention It seems Nickie had a little business of his own to attend to. Nickie along with his Father and Mother decided to drive to Wisconsin for the weekend so that Nickie could try out for the USA Pankration Team Trials (Pankration being a style of mixed Martial Arts) and see how he would do. In his first match he was up against a 19 year old Champion Wrestler, now keep in mind Nickie is 13 almost 14 years old. Not shying away from the competition he proceeded to get into it with the wrestler, at which time he was actually picked up and body slammed. Somehow keeping his wits and with instinct kicking in, he started to pursue his opponent as his mom said as fiercely as a Lion. Within minutes and to the surprise of everyone Nickie had his opponent in a submission hold and forced him to tap out. Now as if that wasn't enough, his next match was against a 21 year old Brown belt. Again not backing away from the challenge Nickie proceeded to move against his opponent with such precision that within minutes he had overcome his opponent and with a choke hold made him tap out. With this win Nickie won his spot on the USA Pankration Team and will be competing in Russia, represent the USA in November I cannot think of a finer young man to represent the USA and the Sons of the American Legion in Russia and he shall go with our support and best wishes, I know he will return a Champion. He is a Champion to us before he even leaves the states. Tap them out Nickie!!! By James Eubanks It is my hope to Rally support for Nickie and raise enough to help get at least one of his parents over there with him. Thank You, For God and Country James A Eubanks 5th Area Vice Commander S.A.L. Everyone knows by now that when a loved one passes on to the Post Everlasting please let me know so we can Honor that Member. More American Hero's that passed on to the Post Everlasting! US Marine WWII Veteran PFC Carl E. Parks served his Country proudly from September 1942 until December 1945 while assigned to the 2nd Marine Division as a Radioman. PFC Carl E. Parks saw extensive Combat service in the South Pacific Theater including the Mariana Islands Saipan, Tinian and as well as Okinawa. He was also part of the marine force sent to Australia to help guard that country against the possibility of Japanese Invasion. PFC Carl E. Parks was selected by his Commanders to be on the deck of the USS Missouri during the Japanese surrender, which ended WWII. His Military Awards include the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal W/3 Sm. Bronze Engagement Stars, WWII Victory Medal and the Navy Occupation Medal (Asia Clasp). PFC Carl E. Parks was a proud US Marine Veteran and because of his love of life, his sense of humor, his dedication to the Inter mountain area and his love for his family he will be missed by many. Another US Marine, James Lawrence Wecker, grew up in Granite City, Illinois. In 1954, after High School, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served 24 Years. He served multiple tours in Vietnam and was the recipient of the Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal W/5, Republic of Vietnam and Rifle Expert Badge. He retired from his service in 1978, achieving the Rank of GySgt-EOD Tech. He then relocated his family to Ridgecrest, Ca. in 1982 and worked for the Navy Air Weapons Station as a contractor where he worked for a total of 30 years. He was an explosive ordinance disposal technician and program manager for multiple defense contractors, he retired in Jim was married for 52 years and was a member of the Masons. We all will miss our Hero, a man that exemplified honor, courage, strength and unconditional love. The gentle giant who touched more people's lives with his quiet wit and commanding presence than there is room to write. The man who gave us everything will definitely be missed.
