1 Knightly News Volume 20 Issue 3 March 2019 Contact the Editor: gnelson8156@gmail.com Inside this issue: Insurance Agent Habitat News Birthdays Chancellor s Corner Knight & Family Membership Lenten Meal Culture of Life 5 Officers & Calendar of Events 6 Grand Knight s Report Next Business Meeting March NOTE: Thursday due to Ash Wednesday Mass at 6:30pm Meeting 7:00pm Meet in the New PAC Rooms This past month the council held another great sold-out Super Bowl Brisket sale. Many thanks to Eddie who chaired the event and all of those knights and families that came out and helped and had fun. There was plenty of fried everything and drink for all. I think everyone enjoyed the fun and fellowship. We also completed our first Blood Drive of 2019 with over 20 units collected - thanks to all who participated (or tried to participate). I m proud of the showing of our knights for this very important ministry. We had several of our knight families attend Priests and Religious Appreciation Dinner, and others who attended the Mens Conference. As we move into Lent, it s time to slow down a little and spend some time assessing how we re doing as Christian men. Do we always try to do what s best for the other? Do we even remember that that s what Jesus calls us to do? Am I charitable to those who are not close to me? Do I treat everyone with respect and dignity - even when they aren t around? Maybe this Lent I ll give up something I enjoy - like talking bad about people that bug me. Or maybe I should add something like only saying nice things. Or maybe even, as Fr. Lou spoke about in his Homily, be kind to those who would hurt me. It s quite a challenge, but with the help of the Holy Spirit, I can try. Peace for All, March 6 Glenn

After the death certificates came in, I went to the widows house to fill out the death claim form for his insurance policies. While this can be done in about 15 minutes, it took me a little over 2 hours to finish. It is not that I was trying to write neatly and took my time (for those of you who have seen my handwriting, you know that is almost impossible). No it was because we talked about a great many things. Some had to do with the benefits, but mostly we just talked. This member was taken from us very quickly and the family didn t have time to say good bye. As I sat there listening, I realized one more thing that separates us from the commercial companies. Personal service. When I first started working for the K of C in 1990, most companies still had that personal service. They would send an agent to the house to fill out claim forms etc. This is not so today. Most companies will mail you a claim form when there is a death of a policyholder. We still believe in the personal service. We feel it is just as important to come to your house to fill out claim forms as it is to come to the house to talk to you about our insurance program. Most companies ask that you come to their office to discuss insurance, at THEIR convenience! We come to your house at YOUR convenience. Sometimes death can provide something positive. In this case, although very sad, it taught me that we really do have a great organization and it gets me wondering why all of our members are not insurance members. If you were to pass away suddenly, wouldn t you want someone there to help your family get through that very difficult time? Perhaps now is the best time to call me so we can get together at your convenience and discuss your family s financial future. Remember, no obligation, just information. Hope to hear from you soon. Eddie Mazurek 512/ emazu5@gmail.com Habitat for Humanity News Each year Habitat for Humanity builds a house sponsored by the Austin Diocese Catholic Churches. If you have ever wanted to get involved with building a house for Habitat for Humanity, we need your help. We will start the house on March 2nd and continue each Saturday until it is completed.. If you are interested or need more info, please contact Eddie Mazurek at emazu5@gmail.com or Skill level doesn t matter, we can use your help.

3 Volume 20 Issue 3 Page 3 Chancellors Corner Greg Nelson Contact the Chancellor to let the council know about prayer requests for yourself or family members. Let your Knights Family Pray with and for you. gnelson8156@outlook.com This Month we have added: Greg & Stephanie s son David Carlos Diaz-Laboy Jaime Gonzalez Jr. Son of Jaime Gonzalez Sr For the March Mtg: Dora Sabedra, Juan Tavarez s Mother Alberto Chiquillo John & Yoli Muniz David Laura s Son Jayden Armand s Son Denis Al and Kathy Fulkerson s Dad Knight & Family of the Month Knight: Steve Dillon On January 27th, St. Catherine held the first Parish Ministry Fair since our new parish hall opened. At the fair, parish ministries were able to showcase their organizations after the 7:30, 9:30, 11:30 and 1:15 masses. As this was not a planned council event, we had approximately two weeks to find someone to take on this event. Steve Dillon, our Youth Activities Director, stepped up to this task. He quickly formed a team and prepared to setup and man our table for the duration of the fair. In addition to setup and tear-down, the team provided information on, and answered questions about, the Knights and our council. Family: Randy & Cathy Schreiber Family Council 8156 is pleased to recognize the Randy and Cathy Schreiber family as Family of the Month for February Randy has been a member of Council 8156 for many years and has served multiple terms as Financial Secretary. For the Council s annual Superbowl Brisket Barbecue, Randy and his family stepped up to help ensure a fun and filling evening. Randy, Regina, Matthew, and Mark fired up the fryers and provided a seemingly endless supply of fried foods for our volunteers. The Parish Ministry Fair is an important event for us as it helps spread awareness about our council and plants seeds in prospective members. For stepping up to this task, and for always taking advantage of opportunities to spread the word about our council, Steve Dillon is this month's Knight of the Month! When you see Steve, please thank him for all his efforts and congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition.

4 Volume 20 Issue 3 Page 4 Membership Eddie Mazurek New members are the life blood of our Order! I ll say that again: New members are the life blood of our Order! I think everyone agrees with that, don t you? New members give the council they join more manpower to accomplish the good works that the Knights are known for across the world. It gives the new member an opportunity to give back to his community and help his fellow man and maybe just as importantly, it infuses the council with new and fresh ideas. Our approach to membership can be summarized in four points: Lead with Faith becoming a better Catholic man, father, and husband through prayer, study and encouragement from fellow brother Knights. Right here in this council you have a number of programs that speak to that. Serve Others This is where many of our councils excel they do so much to support the local community needs. Councils like this one also help support our larger initiatives for the Order nationwide even worldwide. Special Olympics, Coats for Kids, Global Wheelchair Mission it s a long, long list! Defend Your Values From the March for Life to Christian Refugee Relief to the Ultrasound Program, new members can get involved in issues that are close to their hearts and have a dramatic impact on our hurting world. Protect Your Family This includes the Consecration to the Holy Family, our Family of the Month and Year and of course the protection afforded by our Order s highly rated insurance and saving products. Just last month I met with several of this council s members to update their Family Service Record and make sure the family is secure no matter what situation they face. With so much good, why can membership be a challenge? Maybe it s been my approach. I often assumed other men would want to join to help us, the council. But shouldn t I be inviting men to join to help them? Help them along in their faith journey help them discover the joy of being of service to others help them become a better Catholic man? So the next time I ask a Catholic man about joining the Knights, I m going to tell him about why I joined, what it s meant to me, how I m better for it and how I hope I ve made the world just a little bit of a better place because of my membership in the Knights. Then I ll ask him what he s looking for I think no matter what he says, I ll have a solution for it right here in this council. Lenten Meal Revival Starts in March All Hands on Deck. 5 Page 5 Knightly News Culture of Life Criston Klotz To claim the right to abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia, and to recognize that right in law, means to attribute to human freedom a perverse and evil significance: that of an absolute power over others and against others. (St. John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae) NATIONAL NEWS Washington Post columnist Marc A. Thiessen (May 23, 2018) President Trump s critics were apoplectic last week when the president referred to MS-13 gang members as animals. Of course, no one should be dehumanized. Yet many of the same people expressing outrage that Trump would dehumanize vicious gang members have no problem dehumanizing innocent, unborn children.since taking office, Trump has taken many steps to ensure our tax dollars are not used to subsidize the taking of innocent human life. He got a record number of conservative judges [and other key government positions] confirmed during his first year [and last year]; allowed states to defund Planned Parenthood; defunded the pro-abortion United Nations Population Fund; restored and expanded the Mexico City policy banning taxpayer funds for groups that perform abortions overseas; and exempted organizations with moral objections against providing abortifacient drugs from the Obamacare Health and Human Services mandate. He is, as SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser put it Tuesday, the most pro-life president in our nation s history. [He is the first President to address the March for Life participants in Washington, DC (twice now) and through new H&HS regulations insurers must state whether their medical benefits include payment for abortions.] Every life is sacred, and... every child is a precious gift from God, Trump declared Tuesday night [during the SBA List Gala]. We know that every life has meaning and that every life is totally worth protecting. Trump is doing everything in his power to protect those lives. That is why pro-life conservatives stick with him. We are Knights of Columbus, a Catholic religious organization and fraternity founded on the basis that all life is precious and must be respected, supported, nurtured and protected. Fair immigration laws, equal rights for women, racial equality, etc., though very important issues we must support, do NOT supersede protecting, supporting and defending children in the womb, their mothers, and their fathers from the lie of abortion. Abortion doesn t eliminate problems. It further complicates and harms relationships in women s lives. Abortion can and will only make any situation worse. It allows abuse and loneliness to continue. It s a quick fix to a bigger problem. We need to focus on saving every life no matter how small or how large. Consider supporting pro-life organizations that no only decry abortion, but also seek to end the reason women feel abortion is the answer. If you do not know where to find them, let me know and I can provide you a long list of those organizations focused on supporting those considering abortion. Speaking of SBA List, their newest educational effort, a documentary exposing the catastrophic impact of abortion drug use has been released. A Closer Look at the Chemical Abortion Pill shines a spotlight on the growing threat posed to women s health and safety by chemical abortion.chemical abortions now make up an estimated 30-50% of all abortions in the United States and the Big Abortion Industry is pushing to expand them even further, until anyone can purchase these drugs over the counter or over the internet and self-manage an abortion at home. In this special program [link copied below], developed by the same Emmy Award-winning production team of LII s weekly television show Facing Life Head-On, you will hear how women are cruelly deceived by abortion advocates who portray the abortion pill as a safe, easy and near-painless solution to an unplanned pregnancy. You ll meet Elizabeth, who suffered nightmares and anorexia after her chemical abortion. You ll hear from Tammi Morris, who took the abortion pill and was horrified to see a formed, recognizable, undeniable baby. My baby. Haunted by a grief much of society doesn t recognize or understand, they have felt the added guilt of having taken the pills themselves. watch?v=cjyx_vkh-j8&feature=youtu.be A PERSON'S A PERSON, NO MATTER HOW SMALL. Horton Hears a Who, by Dr. Seuss AUSTIN NEWS. Central Texas Coalition for Life begins its sidewalk prayer program March 6, Sign-up online at Protect women and children from abortion; come out and join us and include a prayer for life like the one below (or a similar one) during your daily prayers and meditations for Lent. God, Creator of all life; Mary, Mother of the unborn; St. Theresa of Calcutta; and St. John Paul II, help me be as wise as Horton every day of my life. May my heart, mind and soul love, support and defend every person no matter their stage in life s journey. Help me set aside my prejudices toward a baby in the womb and his or her right to the same life I enjoy every day. Give me the fortitude and wisdom to cherish and support all life from the moment of conception until natural death, and especially those victimized by the lies of the evil one.
