And now we re heading into February which continues the pace. Coming up we ve got Super Bowl Brisket Sunday (cooking starts around 7:00PM Saturday evening on February 2), cooking for Family Movie Night also on the 2nd around 4:00PM (I don t have any details but I think the Church is assuming we re going to take care of it), our Business meeting on the 6th, our Council Audit on the 10th, BBQ Sunday on the 17th, Priests and Religious Appreciation Dinner on the 19th, the Council Planning Meeting on the 20th, a Blood Drive on the 23rd, and garage/shed cleanup coming soon. Not to mention the Habitat build is starting on March 2nd! And I m sure other things will pop-up as they typically do. Regardless of what some people think about the Knights of Columbus, we can be proud of all that we do. And I could care less if some think all we do is sit around a drink beer - those are the ignorant people who try to make themselves feel better because they themselves are not involved. I m continuously amazed at the volunteers we have (and you know who you are) and their relentless support of the many activities in and around our community. I hope we can keep up the pace, but in the back of my mind I m pondering the story of the Goose that Laid the Golden Egg. Presentation of the Lord February 2 Peace for All, Glenn

As you know, I come to visit you in your house to enlighten you on the benefits available to you and your family through the Knights of Columbus. The other night, I was looking for an address and could not locate it on the house. It got me to thinking about emergency vehicles. If you had an emergency, would EMS or firefighters be able to find your house quickly? Most house numbers are on the garage or by the front door. Many times there is no light on them, so that after dark, it is very difficult or impossible to read them. Do your family a favor. Drive down any street and see if you can read the house numbers after dark. Then when you get home, look at your own numbers and see if you can see them from the street. Perhaps a new resolution would be to be sure they can be seen easily from the street. Who knows, it might even save your life! On another topic, do you have an old 401K or some other retirement type product still at your old employer? Perhaps you have seen it crash and maybe it has started coming back up in value. Did you know you could put that retirement account with the Knights of Columbus without paying any taxes on it at time of transfer? Also, the Knights of Columbus guarantee growth every year, does that sound like a good idea to you? In fact, once you earn interest, it cannot be taken away from you, unlike the stock market or mutual funds. We have learned a lot in the recent past about maintaining our retirement funds. We work way too hard for our money to see it slip away because of the economy. If you would like to discuss this or any other products concerning the Knights of Columbus, feel free to contact me. 3 Volume 20 Issue 2 Page 3 Membership Eddie Mazurek Twenty two.. Our membership goal this fraternal year. Can we meet or exceed it? St. Catherine s has about 4500 families. Council has about 350 members. A lot of our Catholic men have not been asked to join the Knights. Why they should be asked: 1. SK Carl Anderson has said: we have a MORAL obligation to ask every good Catholic man to join the Knights. 2. Some of us are getting old. We need younger men to take our place to carry out the mission of Fr. McGivney. 3. The Knights are a great organization! Everyone of us joined for a reason. 4. We, as Catholic men, have been asked by our church to right the wrong that is going on in the nation and world. 5. Where else can you go to a dinner or social activity and know for a fact that the person next to you has the SAME values and ethics you have? We don t need just any 22 men. We need GOOD Catholic men to join us so we can continue our legacy as the best council in Austin and central Texas. Surely we all know one good Catholic gentleman who is not a member of our great organization. Membership is so easy now with the electronic membership tool Supreme has given us. All you need to do is go to Knights.net and have your friend, neighbor, relative sign up. We will take care of the rest of the steps. Knight & Family of the Month Knight: Frank Marchan We are happy to honor our Knight of the Month for January to Frank Marchan. At the start of the fraternal year, Frank accepted the position of program director. This position has many demands and responsibilities to assure our council is aware and has support for the various programs of charity, family, church and community which are our major areas of support for the Knights. This past month, Frank stepped up and took direction for one of our church events which is a corporate communion for our members and their families. This event blends the areas of family and church. Once it was discovered that there was a need for leadership for this event, Frank took ahold of the responsibility and made sure that our council members were aware and participated in this council activity. We thank Frank for doing this and making sure that meaningful activity was continued to celebrate the mass and our brotherhood of togetherness in Christ Family: Lloyd & Carole Monroe This month s family of the month is no stranger if you attend Friday daily mass, Sunday 5 pm mass, baptism classes and probably some groups I am not aware of. We have chosen Lloyd and Carole Monroe as this month s family. Both Carole and Lloyd are sacristans for the Friday daily masses. They quite often serve as ministers in other daily masses as well. Both are also eucharistic ministers at the 5 PM Sunday mass as well. Lloyd has just been promoted to a mass coordinator for 5 pm Sunday mass also. Lloyd jumped in to help when needed to run the baptism classes for the parish. He is also involved with the high school youth group and is a teacher for them. I almost forgot, Lloyd is also our church activity director for this fraternal year. If you are around the parish grounds during the day, there is a good chance you will run into them either volunteering for something or attending a class to enrich their faith. If you happen to see them, please congratulate them on being named Family of the Month!

Oliver s Birthday Jenni Teeples - John & Glenda Massey s daughter Bill & Laine Harris Don s Wife Billye Archer Lenten Meal Revival Starts in March It has been a few years since the last Lenten Meal. Many of our volunteers have been called home and some of the newer members may not know what this is all about. It is about community and service. Friday s during Lent we provide a meal serving over 200 in one hour, before Stations of the Cross. We need many volunteers to pull this off so consider a sacrifice of your time this Lent. Stephanie and I have chaired this for the last 14 years and we enjoy this but it also time to train the next generation chairperson. Council Knights and Ladies are needed to make this happen. Early Preparation starts around 2pm and tasks continue through clean up. This year we will be serving 5:45pm - 6:50pm with cleanup to follow. We also include a Kids Only table which is a favorite of families attending. No charge to those attending but we do have a free will donation. Historically we have always broken even by the last meal. We re looking at 150 lbs. of Potatoes, salads, soups and other sides each week. This year the schedule is: March 8, 15 & 22 April 12 There will be no meal on April 5 in preparation for Father Ray s 25th year as a priest that will be celebrated on April 6. 5 Page 5 Knightly News Culture of Life Criston Klotz Respect for Life (and those defending Life) from Conception until Natural death INTERNATIONAL AND NATIONAL NEWS National Catholic Register U.S. President Donald Trump signs H.R. 390, the Iraq and Syria Genocide Relief and Accountability Act of 2018' in the Oval Office at the White House Dec. 11 in Washington, D.C. Those supporting aid efforts in the region, including Archbishop Bashar Warda of the Chaldean Catholic Diocese of Erbil, Carl Anderson of the Knights of Columbus and New Jersey Rep. Chris Smith, were in attendance. Rep. Smith told the Register that he resolved to write H.R. 390 after visiting Erbil in December During that visit he saw firsthand the desperate situation of the Christians who had been kept alive thanks to the local Church and international Catholic aid organizations. We met all these people whose lives had been saved by the Knights of Columbus, Caritas, and Aid to the Church in Need, he said. Without that, it was an unmitigated disaster. Why are ultrasounds an important life affirming issue? From the January 2019, Columbia, the Knights of Columbus since 2009 have placed 1000 ultrasound machines in prolife pregnancy resources centers. The Columbia includes several real-life stories illustrating how an ultrasound image of her child impacts a mother facing an unexpected pregnancy. From the Nation Review. The reason that progressives such as Weigel [author of an article in The Atlantic titled How the Ultrasound Pushed the Idea That a Fetus Is a Person, ] denounce ultrasound technology is not that they care about female autonomy. They reject it because they want to continue denying the humanity of the unborn child, a humanity that is undeniable whether or not the mother wants the child. Perhaps many are able to dull their consciences and convince themselves that it s just a clump of cells. But deep down, they must know. We all do. From Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman, the writers/coproducers of God s Not Dead, comes a film that speaks to one of the most polarizing topics of our day. Unplanned brings us an eye-opening look inside the abortion industry from a woman who was once its most passionate advocate [and rising star]. No matter which side of the fence you re on, no one will leave this film unmoved by Abby Johnson s journey. TEXAS AND AUSTIN NEWS Central Texas Coalition for Life begins its sidewalk prayer program March 6, St Catherine s of Siena will have signups for volunteers in the Narthex on February 23 and 24, 2019, after all Masses. A January 15, 2019, ruling of a three-judge panel for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit allows the State of Texas to temporarily terminate the Medicaid contract for Planned Parenthood. The ruling vacates the preliminary injunction by federal District Judge Sam Sparks... Judge Edith Jones criticized the district court for failing to give any deference to the findings of the Office of the Investigator General for Texas, and using incorrect standards in justifying the injunction. The case will be sent back to the district court, but in the meantime the largest abortion provider in Texas will not be benefiting from taxpayer funding through their Medicaid contract.
