1 Volume 14 Issue 3 Council Bulletin March 2014 Grand Knights Epistle Ivy Flynn is neat She has shepherded or is that shepherdessed our DART LEAGUE over the past years. A bit ago G. K. Jim and Ivy looked after this long standing club together and now she continues to facilitate the League because (Ivy happily says) it gets her out on Wednesdays. Bother Jim Lumley has too often been ignored. With the advent of call display sometimes some Brothers may have overlooked his invitation to become involved in one of the charitable works of the Order. That said most HAPPILY most Brothers have answered, said Hi and then Sure Dennis Grand Knight - Father Ernie Deslippe Council 1467 A SHOUT OUT to Carol Coveny as well for her ongoing invitation to the ladies who are married to us. The Auxiliary is composed of all of the wives of Knights really - even mine and yours. The Auxiliary staged a Chili dinner, the Valentines Luncheon (roses and wine and proper food offerings.) and again hosted the men of the sliding rocks. When you think of March of course you think of LENT. BUT you also need to think of our Ceilidh. The really best tickets are available from the O Connor Family of course but for sure at our Hall, Brother Jim Lumley and your D.G.K. Peter O Donnell. This has been a sold out gathering in past years and perhaps an indication that the Irish ancestor and spirit of our founder is alive and well in this Council - - and all others as well of course AND Please make sure you welcome our new Brothers DAVE PRIMEAU (usher 9:00 Mass - H.A.) Susan is our new Aux. member RAFFELE PUGLIESE Lauri Rafflele is son-in-law to our Bro. DINO and of course Lauri will be with the Auxilliary Chaplain s Message During the month of March we celebrate St. Patrick the Apostle of Ireland as he was popularly known. St. Patrick was born in Britain, the son of a municipal official. At the age of sixteen he was kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland. His assignment was to be a shepherd for a flock of sheep. It was in Ireland that he learned the Celtic language and was converted to the Catholic faith. Later he escaped his bondage and fled to France where he became a disciple of St. Germaine of Auxerre and visited the monastery on the isle of Lerias near Cannes ( ). Returning to Auxerre he spent the next 15 years studying for the priesthood. It was Pope Celestine 1 that sent Palladius as a missionary to Ireland, but he died there within a year. Consequently St. Germain ordained Patrick as Bishop so that he could continue Palladius work. Patrick arrived in Ireland in 432. He converted some of the chieftains and was very successful in adapting the gospel to the Irish culture. Ireland is the only country in Western Europe in which the church was established without martyrdom. A few years before his death he convoked a synod and turned over the government of the Church in Ireland to other Bishops. St. Patrick died on March 17, 461 and was buried at Saul on Strangford Lough where he had built his first church. Although he was venerated in Ireland and England for many centuries, his feast was not listed in the Roman calendar until Father Brian McColl

5 Only Having Insurance Through Work Doesn t Work Do you know anyone whose life or career has drastically changed during these years of economic downturn? It s very likely that someone in your immediate or extended family or group of friends is facing financial uncertainty. Maybe there s a possibility that you (or your spouse) could lose your job or change employers. Too many people have often relied on group term life insurance as their only safety net. Often, this insurance is an employee benefit provided at low or no cost. The existence of this coverage might convince someone that personally-owned life insurance is not necessary. But only having through work insurance can leave you and your family vulnerable. Most group life insurance policies are limited in amount, which may be tied to salary or some other benchmark. These numbers are often capped, and this cap may be dangerously low when compared to your family s actual needs. In fact, a detailed needs analysis that evaluates your specific situation, will likely show that any employer-provided coverage falls short. In addition, the amount of group insurance offered is almost always reduced, sometimes dramatically, when you retire. You could one day find yourself without coverage, and if your health has changed (which it will as you age), you might also find yourself unable to secure individual protection. At the very least, it will definitely be more expensive. While group life insurance can help, it does not replace the need for individually owned life insurance. I ll be happy to meet with you and provide a no-cost needs analysis, so you ll know exactly where you stand. I m at or martin.evers@kofc.org. Call me let s talk. 6 PRO LIFE PROGRAM: Director: Larry McCaffery Euthanasia is now legal in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland (in Switzerland doctors are not punished for performing assisted suicides), Australia and Columbia. It is also legal in 3 states in the U.S.A., Oregon, Washington and Montana. New Hampshire's Senate has defeated an effort to legalize assisted suicide. Belgian lawmakers gave final approval this month (Feb. 2014) to a measure that would allow euthanasia for incurably ill children enduring insufferable pain. King Philippe was expected to sign the measure into law and make Belgium the first country to lift all age restrictions on legal, medically induced deaths. Pray that euthanasia does not spread world wide. Rose Sunday for the plight of the unborn will be held April 5-6 at Holy Angels and St.Annes Church Director: Bro Gord Smith gosmit@execulink.com REMEMBER LENT On behalf of the Council, I would like to thank Fr. Mark Poulin for organizing such a meaningful liturgy for our Marian Prayer Program in honour of the Immaculate Conception at St. Anne s on Feb. 11, [the World Day of the Sick]. Many people have commented positively on the Liturgy. I would also like to thank Brother Larry McCaffery for organizing our Brother Knights from St. Anne s as well as those Brothers who responded to Larry s call and assisted in the liturgy in any way. As Lent rapidly approaches, plans are underway for our second annual 40 Cans for Lent Food Drive. An announcement will be found elsewhere in the bulletin. Look for sales, and please be generous! Finally, a Brother Knight contacted me to inquire about getting another rosary. His had gone missing. Do you know where yours is? BULLETIN DEADLINE March 23rd Please submit your reports electronically to the bulletin editor. Roy Ewart at: ewartroy@gmail.com. Written submissions should be delivered to Henry Poirier before the deadline. Page 6
