2 The Idaho Odd Fellow Rebekah News - June Page 2 Ramblings From The Grand Secretary This year I, as Grand Secretary, have been asked to print some random selections from the Code and our By-Laws to alert all members of various changes or regulations of our organization. We HAVE been getting a bit slack in adhering to our Code. To ALL desk officers, I would suggest starting with Chapter V of the By-laws and the Code on duties of officers and procedures of a lodge. To D.D.G.M. s & Lodge Deputies, Article IV, Section 4 through Section 8. I realize that this is a repeat, but it seems we have to be reminded of projects more than once for them to be somewhat effective. Everyone please be aware of the Representative s allowance when attending the Grand Sessions in August. It is in the 2013 Journal of Proceedings, Resolution Number 2, page 21. Just remember that September is the time to let Grand Lodge know who your Representatives are, so they can be put on the roster for roll call, if they want to get any compensation for attending the Session. Don t forget to include the name of your new lodge deputy who is selected at that same time in September. As I travel around the Jurisdiction, I find that we are still short on communication from the lodges with the Grand Lodge. The Grand Lodge cannot help if it doesn t know the problem. One question = what do YOU want from the Grand Body? All suggestions will be brought under consideration. The Grand Lodge has the new code inserts available, so you may put in your order anytime. The price this year is $2.50 plus tax, which is 0.15 to total 2.65 each. Thank you. I would suggest that each lodge send in one order for those who desire them to save on postage. One copy has been sent to each lodge as usual. Notice to all Odd Fellow & Rebekah Lodges As the Deputy Grand Master, I am responsible for the organization of the Memorial Ceremony held at the Grand Sessions each year. Coincidently, I am also the Chaplain of the Idaho Department Council and responsible for preparing the memorial program which lists all the names of our departed members. Having these responsibilities, as the Deputy Grand Master I have taken this opportunity to revamp the memorial ceremony to some extent this year in hopes of giving the ceremony a little more prominence and hopefully showing a more appropriate level of respect to our recently departed members. Essential to the plan is having a COMPLETE list of all members departed this last year (since August 1 st 2013). Without a complete list we cannot recognize and honor all who have departed and the members participating in the ceremony will not have the opportunity to fully complete their task. To date, I have received notices from some Lodges listing departed members. I am requesting that all Rebekah and Odd Fellow Lodges who have not sent me their list, and any necessary updates, of departed members please do so no later than August 1 st so I can finalize the program and the Memorial Ceremony for Grand Sessions. Should any member on your list be a past jurisdictional officer it is very important that you include the year they were elected as a jurisdictional officer. I thank you in advance for your cooperation in this endeavor and look forward to seeing you to at the Memorial Ceremony. Please send your list to my home address, or if you prefer, it: Dan Sanow 3008 Westmoreland Circle Idaho Falls, ID sanow1@msn.com In FLT, Kenny Averill, Grand Secretary Many thanks to Lee and Virginia Moberly for their generous memorial donation to the Idaho Odd Fellow Rebekah News I wish to thank all of the Sisters, Brothers, and Lodges who sent cards, who called or sent me s or sent messages on Facebook. You will never know how much your show of love and caring has meant to me, at this my time of loss of my big brother. Thank you for being my Sisters Brothers, friends and a big part of my family. Love, Vicky Kiele

3 The Idaho Odd Fellow Rebekah News - June Page 3 David Deland Grand Master Barbara Pettigrew Assembly President Dear Brothers and Sisters; By the time you read this I will have made most of my visitations. My wife and I have seen a lot of Idaho that we have not seen before. Northern Idaho reminds me of western Oregon where we used to live for many years. Each lodge had a lot of history, both in their halls and their people. I was so glad to be able to learn about each and every one of them. I have met some very dedicated and courteous Brothers and Sisters on our travels, I only wish that there were more of them. Recruiting members especially young members is going to be a top priority in the near future or some of these lodges will cease to exist, including my home lodge Payette #22, the grim reaper hit us hard this last year. The 150th Celebration is coming together my wife has been promoting it on our visits and has been selling meal tickets and medallions. Please remember that the 150th Celebration is open to the public and the only costs are for the meal and the medallions, invite your friends and family to come and learn about our Order. Pioneer lodge will be open from 10am to 4 pm the week before the event. I hope everyone has a nice summer and I would like to encourage you to bring in at least one new member by the start of next fall. In F. L. & T. David Deland Grand Master Dear Sisters and Brothers, What a great experience these past 5 months have been. No one can really express all the feelings you go through. We hope our visits have meant something to someone and will help their lodges. We, Jean Reinike and I, have been treated very, very well and we wish to thank all of you for your kindness and support. We only have 3 meetings left and we know we will miss the traveling to each lodge and getting the love that comes from being a Rebekah. Friendship, Love and Truth has followed us everywhere. We will miss this. I had the opportunity to be involved in the initiation of two people young people at Mountain Home, Guiding Star #4 Lodge. It was a good time had by all who attended. It was an honor to be among the sisters and brothers of that lodge. Hope you are looking for good candidates for your lodges. I have met some new sisters on my visits and they are eager to learn and will make great Rebekahs. Have a great summer and be ready to come back in the fall willing and able to be the best Rebekahs in your community. Find a need and fill it. Check with your city council, law enforcement officers, churches, schools. They could use our organization for good, not just donate, but volunteer. Gather school supplies, blankets, coats, hats, mittens, gloves, scarfs, canned foods, paper products, laundry soap. These are just a few ideas, there are more, just ask your members what they would like to support in your community and get your name out there. Until next time - In FL&T Barbara To our new members Don Harlan Kathryn Smith Guiding Star #4 Bernice Pullen Helen Clark Brenda Stallone Bluebell #72 P.S. Don t forget the 150th anniversary of Idaho City Pioneer Lodge 1 and Rose 18 celebration July 12th. Great PR for our Order. June 15th

5 The Idaho Odd Fellow Rebekah News - June Page MOUNTAIN HOME LODGE #19 SEES SUCCESS OF HARD WORK FROM 2013 IPLAY s first recipient, Devin Vaughan, with his clarinet and recital Brother Windy Osborn and Sister Marlene Osborn peruse some of ribbon. the items available in the IPLAY fundraiser sale. On May 3rd, Mountain Home Lodge #19 held the first of its summer yard sales to raise funds for its IPLAY instrument program. During the sale, one lodge member networked face-to-face with community members at a nearby park where many gather to stage yard sales and vend hand-made products, while others manned the sales back at the lodge hall. At the park, community members responded well to the program s goals, agreed to stop by the lodge hall s sale, and were generous with donations. As the morning passed, it became clear that last year s hard work in advertising the lodge and the IPLAY program was paying off as multiple attendees stated they were familiar with the program or had visited one of last year s fundraising yard sales at the hall. As a result, the sale brought in just over $200 and focus on the local IOOF lodge is improving. Looking forward, this trend will continue as its members keep placing themselves in the eye of the community through established means and those yet to be imagined. Keep up the hard work Mountain Home Lodge #19! From left: Jerry Tippets (band director), Devin Vaughan (IPLAY recipient), Devin s mother, sister, and father, and Kathryn Smith (IPLAY Chairman). Then on May 15th, IPLAY Chairman Kathryn Smith attended Mountain Home s spring band concert, which featured performances by 6th through 12th grade band students from Hacker Middle School, Mountain Home Junior High School, and Mountain Home High School. This year marks the first time that 6th graders have performed as a band, and to celebrate their dedication to music, IPLAY will be including incoming 6th grade band students during its application round this fall. Band director Jerry Tippets, a dedicated supporter of IPLAY, allowed Sister Kathryn time at the microphone in between performances to inform the audience about the IOOF s IPLAY program and further spread the word concerning its benefits towards the students. Performing in the 7th grade band was IPLAY s first instrument recipient, Devin Vaughan, who smiled at waved at Sister Kathryn as he remembered her from last fall when he received his instrument. Speaking with Devin s mother, Amber, Sister Kathryn was pleased to hear that Devin has been thoroughly enjoying playing his clarinet and even received high marks and a ribbon during a recent judged recital. During his recital, the judge was so impressed with Devin s performance that he even stood up and began playing along with him! Great job Devin! After the show, the Vaughan family and band director Jerry Tippets shared a few moments about Devin s wonderful progressed and posed for some photos with Sister Kathryn. We are all so proud of Devin and his love of music! Submitted by Kathryn Smith, Reporter The American flag, also nicknamed as Old Glory or star-spangled banner, has changed designs over the centuries. It consists of 13 equal horizontal stripes of red (top and bottom) alternating with white, with a blue rectangle in the canton bearing 50 small, white, five-pointed stars. Each of the 50 stars represents one of the 50 states in the United States and the 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies that became the first states in the Union.

6 The Idaho Odd Fellow Rebekah News - June Page 6 Some Memorable Reflections On Being A Member Of The Order Recent memories tend to slowly fade away, but old memories tend to hold fast for a longtime. For example, the many happy memories of the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs include: the many delicious pot lucks, the afternoon picnics, the buckaroo breakfasts, the day trips to Idaho City and Silver City lodges to hold lodge meetings to confer degrees, the conferring of the second degree at Dead Horse Cave near Gooding, the social conversations between members and friends, the celebration of birthdays and anniversaries and other social occasions, the Fort Hall Bannock Indians wearing their beautiful colorful native attire while both young and old were slowly dancing to their rhythmical beat of the round rawhide drums, the young elementary students playing musical instruments and singing their hearts out at a Northwest Odd Fellowship meeting in Boise, the visitations of the Sovereign Grand officers proudly wearing their respective collars, the beautiful long formal dresses resembling a banquet of flowers worn by the Rebekahs at a Grand Assembly meeting, the closing ceremonies of the Odd Fellow Grand Lodge and the Rebekah Grand Assembly, the dancing to the music provided by Donnie and Pat Marvin, the mystic rites and hilarious fun of conferring the Samaritan degree in Post Falls, Lewiston, Boise, etc., the playing of the piano by Bob Covert, the singing of Kenny Averill at an evening campership meeting, the fish fry, the oyster soup, the degree rallies, the visiting of sick members, the chili feed, the pool tournaments, the pinochle card parties, the raffles, the friendly disagreements of the rules while playing dominoes, the raising of funds by selling recipe books, pins and pictures, the funny and delightful costumes worn by Rebekahs during Grand Assembly, the laughable stories as told by Opal Doepner and Eloise Ogilvie and other Rebekahs of the skits and antics during Grand Assembly, the using of the Albertson s grocery card to help raise money for the candidates going on the U.N.P. Trip to New York City, the remaining unspent balance from this joint fund raiser was $1, that was disbursed to Vicky Kiele to be deposited in the Jurisdictional Fund, the campership meeting at the end of Duff Lane near the Boise River close to Lee and Virginia Moberly s home in Middleton for a potluck and hot dogs around an open campfire, the taking of a physical inventory of the many priceless artifacts ND memorabilia protected under locked glass display cases at the Historical Building located in Caldwell, under the watchful eye and directions of the late Glenn Osborne, the attending and participating in many Odd Fellows and Rebekahs funerals, the tireless work of the editor by the late Earl Graham and the current editor Marjorie Harlan, the practice as instructed by the late Frank Markham of marching starting with the left foot and how to properly present the sword in the same way as is done in the TV commercials for the U.S. Marines, the participation at one time or another at the following lodges: Post Falls, Plumber, Council, Wilder, Parma, Caldwell, Nampa, Boise, Melba, Silver City, Idaho City, Mountain Home, Gooding, Jerome, Burley, and Idaho Falls. The proceeding are just a few of many special occasions that still remain in the mind s eye. There were many other important lodge activities of individuals both living and deceased that have had a lasting impact upon members of our Order. The memories go on and on. God willing and the creek does not rise, I sincerely hope everyone will be around for a long time to come in keeping the traditions of elevating the character of brotherhood and sisterhood with the principles and teaching from the rituals of our Order. 7 In Loving Memory Leona Ellen (Toni) Bollar 1949 ~ 2014 Leona (Toni) passed peacefully at home into a better place and eternal life where she will be surrounded by her beloved angels and our Lord, on February 26. Toni was born July 28, 1949, in Council, Idaho to Jack and Donoha Herman. She grew up on the Little Salmon River at Pollock, Idaho, and attended school in Riggins. After high school, she attended Links Business College in Boise, and then moved to McCall, where she worked for the U.S. Forest Service. She married Bert Bollar on July 12, 1970, and promptly moved to the Panama Canal Zone, where Bert was stationed in the U.S. Army. In 1970, they moved back to Boise, where she worked for Grand Central and Blue Cross. She retired from work for the first time in 1976 when they adopted their 6 week old son, Eric. Toni continued as a mother and housewife until Bert retired from the Army National Guard, and they moved to Jackson, WY. In Jackson, she worked at Jackson s State Bank and Saint John s Hospital, prior to deciding to retire for good and enjoy the good life of the area they lived in. She enjoyed being able to sit on the deck and listen to the two rivers out her back door and watch the animals that were always in the area. Toni s favorite pastime was to be able to knit things for the young ones, relatives and friends. Nobody was a stranger to her. Toni was a member of Garnett Rebekah Lodge #120 of Riggins; Kemi Court #55 of the Ladies Oriental Shrine of Boise, where she was high priestess from ; the Iris Temple #40 of the Daughters of Nile of Boise; and Boise Chapter #65 of the Order of Eastern Star. A celebration of her life was held on March 5th at the Long Valley Finnish Church of McCall. A get to gether was held after the service at the senior center in McCall. Toni has requested that memorial donations be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children or The Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City. This photo was taken immediately after Bro. Sanow had given funds to the various branchesof the Order and everyone was still smiling. These were the Dignitaries and the Odd Fellows in attendance at the District #1 Meeting on March 15th, The meeting was hosted by Ivy Rebekah Lodge #23 in Pocatello, Idaho. Shannon Vieth, District #1 Chairman There are a range of events, which may have inspired the idea of Father s Day. One of these was the start of the Mother s Day tradition in the first decade of the 20th century. Another was a memorial service held in 1908 for a large group of men, many of them fathers, who were killed in a mining accident in Monongah, West Virginia in December A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was an influential figure in the establishment of Father s Day. Her father raised six children by himself after the death of their mother. This was uncommon at that time, as many widowers placed their children in the care of others or quickly married again. Sonora was inspired by the work of Anna Jarvis, who had pushed for Mother s Day celebrations. Sonora felt that her father deserved recognition for what he had done. The first time Father s Day was held in June was in Father s Day was officially recognized as a holiday in 1972 by President Nixon.
