2 The Idaho Odd Fellow Rebekah News - October Page 2 RAMBLINGS FROM THE GRAND SECRETARY As I stated in the last paper, there have been some changes in the office. Our long standing Treasurer, Frank Markham has tendered his retirement from the treasury as of August 1, 2011 and brother Leonard Olson, of Coeur D Alene, has been appointed to fill the vacancy for the rest of that term. This does not mean that Brother Frank will disappear as he will assist Leonard in the continued policies of the office for a period of time and then be available when called upon as his health allows. I don t know about anyone else, but I will miss Frank very much and I think the Order will have a hard time filling the void. I am still waiting for some of the Special Lodge Deputy election results to be sent in so the Grand Master can issue the commissions. Thank you. The new up-dated Constitution/Bylaws are in the office and available to those that wants to keep current with the operations of the organization. Each lodge has been issued one. The others are $5.00 per copy. If there is any doubt of being current, check page 49 for lodge fees E-F-G. If they are not in it, you are NOT current. When you get current, get rid of the old one to avoid confusion. The 2010 Code changes are available through the office if your lodge has not ordered them. The cost is $5.00 each including tax and freight. Because of a decline in the membership, the Sovereign Grand Lodge has informed us that we are eligible for only one (1) representative from the Grand Lodge to S.G.L. as of This means that we are going to have to get busy on a membership program. Please fill out all information of a new member and forward to the Grand Lodge office so the records can be updated. There is a form for this in the IOOF News from S.G.L. each time, or contact the Grand Secretary. (Please include phone number of member) We have disposed of the Soda Springs Lodge building and the Burley Lodge building is sold under contract. Some of the paraphernalia has been transferred to the Surplus Property rooms for a sale later on. If your lodge needs anything or if it has anything to get rid of, contact this office to make arrangements. The Patriarchs Militant has contacted the Heads of Units for input on the memorial service at sessions next year, so be ready. The deadline for application for lodge assistance has passed and that particular program will be determined at the Grand Lodge Session. This is a positive thing for those lodges that do not have a reserve for maintenance. People are attracted to the success of others, and an unattractive building is a turn-off. Take pride in what and who you are! Other plans for assistance are being formulated, but they have not been fine-tuned, so more information will follow as things develop. Don t forget to register for Northwest Association session in Yakima, WA. I ll see you all down the road. Kenny Averill, Grand Secretary New Address for Editor 2527 Airbase Road Mountain Home, Idaho Many thanks to Dick and Jannette Weatherly for their generous donation to the paper in memory of Brother Matt Breeze, PGM. 7 The Idaho Odd Fellow Rebekah News - October Page The Eye Related Program of Idaho Where A Little Can Go A Long Way - By Dan Sanow, Chairman In my last article I introduced you to the Idaho Eye Program and how it works, its committee members, and a little of its history. I also told you about the very busy year we had in 2010 and encouraged you to consider adopting a program to meet a goal to donate $1 per year per member of your Lodge. Well, our Eye Program Treasurer, Jelene Baird, has put together another great report for 2011 that reflects another busy year of activity. As of the closing date on June 30 th the Eye Program paid out a total of $ this year to a total of eight recipients. Donations included $ from the Rebekah Assembly and a $300 donation from Zenith Rebekah Lodge #59. There has also been a lot of program activity this summer so the report for next year while likely show a similar interest as this year. As you can see, the Eye Program continues to be a very successful program that reaches out to people in need. It is also an excellent way for the Lodges to promote themselves in a very positive way in your respective communities. However, to continue this important and rewarding service to our communities we are going to have to significantly increase the donations side of the ledger however. Also since the last article I have received several copies of the most current Odd Fellows and Rebekahs Visual Research Foundation brochure titled Seeing is Believing. There will be copies available at the Grand Sessions. The brochure introduces you to Dr. Henry Jampel, 3 rd Odd Fellow Professor of Ophthalmology of the Wilmer Eye Institute and discusses several other insights about the Eye Program, funding sources, jurisdictional projects, and referral procedures. It also lists the 40 separate jurisdictions that have active eye programs. Now, about that donations side of the ledger! The $1 per member per year has a long history with the Eye Program and is actually a very easy objective for a Lodge to achieve. A couple ideas that immediately come to mind are to dedicate a portion of the silver drill or certain collections to the eye program. Every Lodge has a donation policy for acknowledging the passing of a member or a member of their family. Usually this involves flowers but what about making a memorial donation to the eye program instead? This is one my Rebekah Lodge just did and the one donation has already exceeded the $1 per member objective. Another thought is to have an annual fund raising dinner. It could involve just the members of the Lodge or include family, friends, and/or your community. I am sure there are many more simple but very effective ideas out there that would make it easy for your Lodge to reach and exceed the $1 goal per member. Again, I would like to encourage the Secretaries of the Lodges to get familiar with the Eye Program and its procedures and forms. The best way to obtain all the necessary forms and /or information is to send me an at sanow1@msn.com and request a set. Also anyone having questions about the Idaho Eye Related Program is encouraged to do the same. If it is more convenient, my phone number is My name is Brandon Ashley and I participated in the United Nation Pilgrimage for youth. My trip was sponsored by Nampa IOOF Lodge #40. We departed from the Boise around 6 am on June 25, 2011 and the trip lasted until July 7 th. We had many adventures staring in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, where we visited the Liberty bell and Independence Hall as well as Betsy Ross s house. From there we went to New York City and while we were there we saw a Broadway show (Sister Act), Liberty Island, Ground Zero, 5 th Ave, Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick s Cathedral, as well as spending the day at the United Nations. From New York City we drove to Niagara Falls Canada and stayed a night there and visited the falls. Then we drove to Oshawa Canada and celebrated Canada Day which is their independence day. From there we drove to the capital of Canada, Ottawa and while we were there for the day we visited the Canadian Parliament buildings. Our next destination was Gettysburg, and we toured the battle fields and the town of Gettysburg. Washington D.C was our next and final stop, while there we visited Arlington National Cemetery and saw the changing of the guards and the changing of the wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. Then we visited the Iwo Jima memorial, Vietnam memorial, Lincoln memorial, Washington Monument, Smithsonian museum of Natural History, American History, and the Air and Space museum. To finish off our trip we got an exclusive tour of the Capitol building and got to sit in on a session of congress. I met many new and good friends and it was a trip of a life time. I appreciate the opportunity I got to go on this trip and I give a special thanks to Nampa lodge #40. Brandon Ashley Brandon Ashley - UNP Delegate

8 The Idaho Odd Fellow Rebekah News - October Page 8 True Australian Halloween Ghost Story John Bradford, a Sydney University student, was on the side of the road hitch hiking on a very dark Halloween night and in the midst of a storm. The night was rolling on and no car went by. The storm was so strong he could hardly see a few feet ahead of him. Suddenly he saw a car slowly coming towards him and stopped. John, desperate for shelter and without thinking about it, got in the car and closed the door, just to realize there was nobody behind the wheel and the engine wasn t on! The car started moving slowly. John looked at the road and saw a curve approaching. Scared, he started to pray, begging for his life. Then, just before he hit the curve, a hand appeared through the window and turned the wheel. John, paralysed with terror, watched how the hand appeared every time they came to a curve. John saw the lights of a pub down the road so, gathering strength, jumped out of the car and ran to it. Wet and out of breath, he rushed inside and asked for two shots of tequila. He then started telling everybody about the horrible experience he went through. A silence enveloped everybody when they realized he was crying and... wasn t drunk. About 15 minutes later, two guys walked into the same pub. They were also wet and out of breath. Looking around and seeing John Bradford sobbing at the bar, one said to the other, Look, Bruce. There s the idiot who got in the car while we were pushing it.
