1 OLDSMOBILE CLUB OF AMERICA EASTERN MA. GMO CHAPTER Issue #90 GMO Holiday Party ROCKET POWER NEWSLETTER!! January 2013 January 5 and the 7 th Annual GMO Holiday Party arrived simultaneously with good weather. 62 GMO members and guests made the trek to the Consoli home as did 35 pounds of Prime Rib which was roasted to perfection. Eventually everyone lined up to partake of the main course which featured the afore mentioned prime rib, rice pilaf, green beans with mushrooms, Mario Consoli s home grown and personallyprepared eggplant parmigiana, stuffed shells, and spinach or Caesar salads. I am sure I have forgotten something. Attendees were greeted by David & Karen and were able to choose from a wide variety of soft and hard beverages as well scrumptious hors d oeuvres which I couldn t even begin to identify (well, OK, I did recognize the chips & dips). After the meal we had a very brief business meeting where past Treasurer Andrea DesJardins presented the financials and Ted Loranz was given the responsibilities of Vice President as a result of Chuck Schiel s move to the Presidency.

2 All attendees were given slips of paper with numbers and David proceeded to raffle off note cubes and Oldsmobile items to the those present. He also auctioned off a number of Oldsmobile signs and a show board for the benefit of the GMO. Thanks to Jim Maffeo for donating those items. Finally an Oldsmobile By Steve Braidman I found this car on the ebay collector site after receiving over 90 detailed high resolution pictures and numerous conversations with the owner's son. After the meeting the desserts were set out. The festive cake was cut and I assume the cookies and treats were provided by Isabella Consoli. After searching for 3-1/2 years, driving 1975 miles, and seeing over 27 cars from Vermont to New Hampshire to Maine to Hyannis, MA to Philadelphia to the tip of Long Island, N.Y. to Kingston, N.Y., I finally replaced the 1967 Olds 98 convertible that I sold to Joe Lane. This car was in the Lansing, Michigan area in a father and son garaged collection. The father had bought it from the original owner in Missouri and the car still has the original 1972 Missouri license plates and the dealer plate frame from Herb Peterson Olds/Pontiac. At some point, someone noticed that the GMO Head Judge Phil Cafarella was missing. He was later discovered sharpening his skills on David s cars in the garage. The next GMO meeting is at Berejik Motors on 2 nd Avenue in Needham at 1:30 on February 10. Be sure to be there as we need to discuss the GMO future with the OCA. It is an original paint car, with the original deluxe interior, original vinyl top, no rust, 63,000 miles, with dual 8 way power seats, power windows, remote trunk release, ice cold A/C, AM/FM stereo, cruise control, tilt steering wheel, and came with the original set of keys and floor mats. I had it delivered enclosed by Intercity on Chuck Schiel's recommendation, and they did a great job, bringing it within 2 blocks of my home on Thanksgiving week. After going through the whole car, it was exactly as described in pictures and conversations, and after getting it registered and inspected, its first

3 drive was 10 miles round trip with Becky to celebrate our 40th Wedding Anniversary at a party with friends on Dec. 16th at the Charlie Horse Restaurant in West Bridgewater, MA. This was also the car's 40th anniversary! The first long trip was to the Holiday Party on Jan. 5th at Dave and Karen Consoli's home in Methuen, MA. Round trip was 134 miles and the car was smooth and quiet at 75 to 85 mph the whole way on 495. Upon filling up at the nearest gas station on the way home, the car registered 11.5 mpg. It feels great to finally see a classic Olds parked in the garage again. P.S. How Old is George Berejik? a. 39 b. 68 c. 87 Hope you find this challenging ;-) From the Consolis Karen & I hosted our 7th GMO Holiday party on January 5th. I can't believe it has been 7 years since we started this Olds tradition. Over the years we have had many different members attend and the company and conversation is always delightful. I enjoyed conversing with my fellow members and watching the children get along so well. The children's behavior would have been perfect had the big Berejik kid not been chasing them around the house, but I am glad to see George back to his old tricks. Our guests were fun to entertain. Most came with a healthy appetite and per the Consoli motto "no one leaves hungry". I hope we fulfilled everyone's expectations. This year was no different than years past. After our meal we sat around for a quick meeting and raffle prize give away as well as our yearly Oldsmobile signs auction. Special thanks to Jim Maffeo for the donations. Karen and I would like to thank everyone for the wine and gifts for our children. We also would like to thank everyone for the cards we received after the event. We are truly blessed to be associated with such a wonderful group of people. I will be attending the February 10th meeting at Berejik motors and will be available to answer questions on pending OCA matters. Interim GMO president Chuck Schiel and interim Vice President Ted Loranz will be addressing that issue as well as many other important issues facing the chapter. 4 Letter from the President HAPPY NEW YEAR to every member of the GMO may 2013 be the happiest, healthiest, and most prosperous year yet for you and your families! The Discovery network is apparently in negotiations with Paul Abdalian to host a new show called Armenian Chopper. During a routine background check for all new officers, it was discovered that Paul has been working with Discovery and Orange County Choppers to replace the recently canceled American Chopper series that ran from 2003 to 2012 on Discovery Network. During a phone interview, a network official said that Paul Teutul Sr. and Paul Abdalian are working closely on reviving the series. The OCC name would be converted to Oldsmobile Classic Choppers or Orange County Cutlass. Discovery would prefer to incorporate the Oldsmobile brand into the motorcycles with Abdalian's help. No word yet if Abdalain's will grow a handlebar moustache for the show. Stay tuned. Time for 2013 Dues It is time to pay your 2013 GMO dues. Dues run for the calendar year 1/1 to 12/31. If we have not received your dues by the end of February, you will be dropped from our and newsletter lists. It was so great seeing many of you at the Holiday Party at the Consoli s on January 5 thanks to David and Karen and their entire family for all of the warmth and hospitality that they bring to our holiday season every year it was a heck of a bash! I m so sorry that I had to leave the party early Debbie was so sick with the flu and I was so worried about her that I felt that I needed to be with her as soon as I could that evening. The good news is that she s feeling much better and has gone back to work the bad news is that she really missed seeing all of you at the Holiday Party. Never fear the 2013 GMO Spring Dust- Off Show is only about 4 months away yippee! I must say that it feels very uncomfortable for me to be writing this letter under the banner Letter from the President as most of you know, GMO President David Consoli motioned the GMO Board of Directors in December to be recused from the position of GMO Chapter President pending the outcome of actions by the Oldsmobile Club of America (OCA) Board of Directors in early David made this motion because he was very concerned that his involvement in ongoing issues within the OCA Board of Directors would constitute a conflict of interest in the daily operation of the Eastern Massachusetts GMO Chapter. After much discussion and debate, the GMO Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve the motion to recuse David as GMO President. What this means is that I will be serving as Interim President of the GMO until such time as President Consoli and the GMO Board vote to suspend the recusal following resolution of issues within the OCA National Club Board of Directors. In addition, Ted Loranz has graciously agreed to serve as Vice President of the GMO until I return to my elected position of Vice President. If anyone in the GMO has any questions regarding these issues, please don t hesitate to give me a call I ll always do my best

5 to provide a receptive ear to any member that wants to chat about the GMO and what s happening moving forward. As we move toward our GMO Club Meeting on February 10, our club membership has several critical questions to think about namely, 1.) Is the GMO Chapter committed to moving forward with hosting the 2015 OCA National Meet in Marlborough, MA, and 2.) Is the GMO Chapter committed to remaining an affiliated local Chapter of the Oldsmobile Club of America? There s already been a great deal of informal discussion of these two questions among our Chapter s members and obviously the answers to these critical questions are tied to what actions are taken this spring by the OCA Executive Board. PLEASE PLAN ON ATTENDING THE GMO CHAPTER MONTHLY MEETING ON SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 10 AT BEREJIK MOTORS IN NEEDHAM we will be discussing these important questions at this meeting. We ll be discussing this theme/logo idea at the next 2015 OCA Nationals planning meeting in late February PLEASE let us know what you think, and if you have any ideas for enhancing this we are ALL EARS! In conclusion, I wanted to formally state what a privilege it is to be a member of this wonderful GMO Chapter and to share friendships with each of you! If possible, PLEASE plan on attending our next GMO monthly meeting on February 10 and lend your voice to the shaping of our club s future! Rocketing Forward! Best Regards, Chuck Berejik Update Regarding the 2015 OCA National Meet, the Meet Planning Committees met for the first time on December 6, 2012 at the Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel. We had a very productive first meeting and as a result of that meeting we are making progress in our effort to define the theme of the 2015 National Meet as well as a Meet Logo. Glimpse of the Month Shaun Monaghan We feel strongly that the Meet should be known as the BOSTON Meet, and that Boston s historical significance as the Cradle of Liberty be a focal point. Based on an initial suggestion by Betty Ann Berejik at our November GMO meeting, we have developed a tentative logo for the Meet using the Paul Revere theme as its focal element. The Bruins are BACK
