The thought is that our truest self; our spiritual center; the best reflec on of our humanness comes from the heart. When one thinks about Nouwen s hope, we come to realize the phrase, Speaking from the heart, is a conversa on from our most in mate and o en guarded self. When we speak from the heart to those we cherish, we are willing to let our guard down. The dialogue that comes from the heart is our most special, sacred treasure. It is our gold. To invite God to enter our hearts is a special vulnerability. When we do, we don t just think about God, or talk about God, we allow our deepest self a rela onship with the One who has made us. Like a parent with grown children, our Maker wants the adult conversa on and an in macy only found in this tremendous trust. The special friendship Nouwen spoke of gives direc on and peace. This rela onship can demonstrate how we can live with others in fantas c joy. May this be so for you... UMW s Love Circle group trims, sorts, and sends to the Red Bird Mission. 2. Used eyeglasses - collection jar is on the shelf above the coat rack. Pam DeBord packs these for donation to the Lyons Club. 3. Aluminum cans - collection point is under the stairs behind the church or under the coat rack. The Mission Team turns these in for cash for Habitat for Humanity. These items are collected for very worthy causes and your participation won t cost anything but a little time and is greatly appreciated! 4 The First United Methodist Church of Castle Rock Communicator Page 4 The First United Methodist Church of Castle Rock Communicator Page 9 RED BIRD MISSION S APPALACHIAN CRAFT FAIR Saturday, November 8 from 9am-2pm Sunday, November 9 between services All proceeds will go to the Red Bird Mission Fun during Back to Sunday School Red Bird Mission began in 1921 as a school providing opportunity to young people through education in a Christian environment. Red Bird Mission continues building on that legacy responding to the needs of more than 14,000 infants, children, youth, men, women, and elderly through its ministries. Everyone is invited to attend the Red Bird Mission s Appalachian Craft Fair where there are quality handmade crafts from the rural mountains of Kentucky. All sales will go directly to the Red Bird Mission. THIRD GRADE BIBLE RECIPIENTS

5 The First United Methodist Church of Castle Rock Communicator Page 8 TIME AND TALENT AUCTION & LUNCHEON The Time and Talent Auction and Luncheon will be held in Fellowship Hall on Sunday, October 26th, after the 11:00am worship service. This is Christian Fellowship s annual fundraiser for our Youth s mission trip, Trustees to purchase equipment for the Church, and a mission organization selected by Christian Fellowship. Our goal this year is to raise at least $4,000. This is an opportunity to share your time and/or special talent. Items/services that have been donated in the past include: preparing your homemade jelly, horseradish, cakes, and breads; purchasing a round of golf or restaurant gift certificates; donating time to garden, paint or other home repairs; quilt instruction; tutoring; sharing your artistic or craft products; or providing your week at a timeshare. Begin thinking now of how you or your group can contribute to this special event. Green pledge forms are available at the welcome desk. The pledge forms need to be returned by Thursday, October 23rd. They can be placed in the offering plate or returned to the church office. Join us in Fellowship Hall, after the 11:00am worship service. You will enjoy delicious lunch, prepared by our Youth, and have an opportunity to purchase and enjoy items graciously donated by our church family. HALLOWEEN FOOD DRIVE The Missions Team will be sponsoring a Halloween Food Drive to benefit the Douglas/Elbert Task Force. Bags will be handed out on October 26 and will be due back by November 2 for delivery. This congregation has been very supportive and generous at our previous food drives. We hope to be able to donate 1,000 pounds of food to the Douglas/Elbert Task Force as a result of the drive. Thank you so much for your continuous support. Trunk or Treat Trick or Treat to many fun, decorated cars with lots of candy. Hot dogs, chips & cider will also be served. Community Welcome Saturday, October 25 6:30pm Join in the fun & decorate your car for a chance to be chosen as the best decorated car by the kids. Sign up at the Welcome Desk. We are asking for donations of wrapped candy to give out to kids that evening. Please bring all donations in to the Church office.

Matthew 5:14-15 We are excited to offer a new music class Music Together - Music Together of Castle Rock is now at the First United Methodist Church! We offer music classes for children ages 0-7 and would love for you to join us at a class. Classes for 5-7 year olds are Monday nights at 4:30pm. We offer a pajama class on Mondays at 5:45pm for our 0-5 year olds. Spend time singing, giggling, learning, and bonding with your child. Sign up for your FREE demo class and get all the details on the program at We are also looking at providing a cooking class for adults and youth. If you would like to take part in a class like this, please contact the church office at or info@fumccr.org. We will set up a class according to the interest that we receive. JOIN THE CHANCEL CHOIR I will praise the Lord God with a song and a thankful heart Psalm 69:30 God loves to hear His people sing. He created us to sing, and when we sing His praises we connect heaven and earth with a song. Music can be a wonderful expression of our faith and trust in the Lord. Chancel Choir WANTS YOU!!!! Singing releases endorphins and makes you feel good; Singing reduces stress and is therapeutic both emotionally and physically. AND...it s a lot cheaper than group therapy! Come join us! Call Nancy Docksey at My thinking was reflective and humbling as our Stephen Ministry team met on September 11th for our bi-monthly continuing education and peer supervision meeting. I was reminiscent of the special aspect and great responsibility that accompanies this day and how it is significant to many tender hearts, our pained nation and to our ever-changing world. Not only were we reminded of the events of that day thirteen years ago, September 11th was also the World Day of Prayer. From the early morning when I read the devotion from the Upper Room, throughout the day and all the way into the lovely ending of the day, praying with my Stephen Ministry companions I was struck by the Thought of the Day: God s word helps us stand against hard times. This World Day of Prayer made me think about what Stephen Ministry means to me. In my ten years of being a Stephen Minister it has been a blessed journey of growth. It has meant hope, forgiveness, compassion, gratitude and life! It has also meant faith that is practiced in giving care to others. I am told that Stephen Ministry has made a difference in my various care receiver s walks with Jesus, and I know it has made a difference in my own walk as I provide care in Jesus name. Jesus promise, Where two or three are gathered, there I am also, has become very real to me. Stephen Ministry has offered me a way to be the personal presence of Christ to those in time of greatest need. If you, or someone you know may be interested in having this experience, either by becoming a Stephen Minister or having someone to walk with you in Christian companionship, please let Reverend Rob or Reverend Sarah know.
