Gus Lohrum, Pastor Mary Puraty, Office Secretary Bob Schlabach, Music Director Liz Vantress and Marilyn Schlabach, Musicians Jane Perry, Custodian Romans 12:9-10 states, Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor. The words from Romans get expressed in a popular principle that states, People do not care how much we know; until they know how much we care. This principle is something I have tried to appreciate each time I have begun to serve in a congregation. If people are to see Christ in us, they have to see we care, but a good question to ask is care about what? Can people see that as a Christian and member of Newbern FUMC we care about Jesus Christ? Can people see we care about Jesus enough to study his teachings through the authority of the Bible? Can they see we care because we refer to its principles to guide our living? Can people see our love of God inspires us to worship regularly, pray sincerely, give generously and serve others warmly? It is often been said, people are watching to see how much we care and I believe that is true. Remember, most of all, the one who is watching and matters most is God. May God and others see in 2008 how much the people of Newbern FUMC care by the actions of our lives? Yours In Christ, Gus

Ash Wednesday, in Western Christianity, the first day of the penitential season of Lent, so called from the ceremony of placing ashes on the forehead as a sign of penitence. This custom, probably introduced by Pope Gregory I, has been universal since the Synod of Benevento (1091). In the Roman Catholic church, ashes obtained from burned palm branches of the previous Palm Sunday are blessed before mass on Ash Wednesday. The priest places the blessed ashes on the foreheads of the officiating priests, the clergy, and the congregation, while reciting over each one the following formula: Remember that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return. Ash Wednesday occurs six-and-a-half weeks before Easter. Thus, its date varies each year according to the date of Easter. The earliest possible date of Ash Wednesday is February 4 and the latest possible date is March 10. In Eastern (Orthodox) Christianity, Ash Wednesday is not observed; Lent begins on Clean Monday, the Monday of the seventh week before Orthodox Easter.
