This ws the question to which Dr. Byron Youtz, cdemic vicepresident of SUNY t Old Westbury ddressed himself Thursdy night in Snger College. Dr. Youtz president's power in the running of the collegeis he solely n dministrtor, or does he hve cretive role s well? The governnce problem is by no mens yet solved. A committee put together constitution over the summer, but when presented to the university community, it ws not rtified. Menwhile, President Wofford nnounced tht he would be leving to become president of Bryn Mwr. Tied to Stte n ddition to internl conflicts, the university must lwys be nswerble to Albny. n spite of this limittion, it hs negotited number of innovtive moves not permitted in other stte universities. Dr. Youtz pointed out tht in recruitment of both fculty nd students, Old Westbury dels with 44 lot of high risk stuff." One fculty member lcks high school diplom; the school is interested less in dvnced degrees thn in teching bility nd rpport with students. n choosing students s well, diploms re niot required. f student is not outstnding cdemiclly, however, he must hve other tlents. Dr. Youtz cited the exmdle of._ tlented 34 yeroldstudent who grew up in the streeys of Hrlem nd hs jst returned to eduction. The criteri for dmissions involves the prospective student's interest in tking n ctive role in plnning the college. Students re on the dmissions committee nd tke prt in interviewing nd recruiting. However, s the exct stndrds for dmission re s yet '"vgue," there exists the dnger tht dmisions will become merely "selfreplicting process." When sked whether some of. the problems being fced t Westbury might mke it "microcosm of this university," Dr. Youtz repeted tle fmilir to Stony Brook studentsovercrowding in the dormitories. Additionl fcilities promised by the stte filed to mterilize, nd the university hd lredy mde its housing committments. Although mkeshift rrngements were improvised t the lst minute, Old Westbury hopes tht its "sense of smllness nd unity will be preserved." Eventully the school hopes to hve bout four hundred students, in few smll colleges, ech with degree of utonomy, but lso shring some common fcilities. Still Debting Some problems hve not been ironed out yet t Westbury. A debte over the ding system is still underwyshould the college employ the "pss/fil or "pss/no credit'? "The problem does not come up of just occupying spce or fculty's time,"' pointed out Dr. Youtz. Another unresolved question is whether or not students my hve the power to rte fculty members. Under AAUP regultions, judgment of fculty must be by thei pees rther thn by students, This, however, contrdicts prt of the experimentl design of the college. Miss Rines relted the good points: the livelier courses, the noncompetitive spects of Old Westbury life nd the close nd relxed student/fculty reltions in which fculty members re willing to hve students s friends on "horizontl rther thn verticl level." t isn't communltype thing, but we do hve close feelings with others." Bill Myrick chipped in with 16, nd fine defensive effort on Piper, shutting out the Potsdm lltournment forwrd who hd scored 3 1 points ginst Brooklyn on the previous night, G 1ssberg contributed seven sists. Mssimino ws plesed, of course, with the wy his tem plyed on the court, but he ws lso hppy with the wy they hndled themselves off it. "Stony Brook ws very well tken," he sid. "We received some wonderful compliments bout the kids. Tht, to me, is even more importnt thn winning this tournment." GONG UP: Pt Bsketbller Art.BRwd dts re Opponence l D D muosue P; month's Pce gme. Plts mo photo by Pw co.. Squshmen Fll Before Yle But Rebound To Victory Aginst Almni BY BARRY SHAPRO The Stony Brook sqush tem closed out the old yer with prevction wllopping of recent Ptriot lumni by n 84 mrgin. But fter the return to school the Elis of Yle University reneged on the holidy spirit by hnding the rcquetmen rther convincing 9 psting. Yle, tem tht rnks just below the top sqush powers, hrdly worked up swet in turning bck wht Coch Bob Snider hs often clled the best sqush tem he hs coched t Stony Brook. ' The Pts trveled to New Hven Mondy fternoon to meet the Elis for the first time in school history. The fst tht Stony Brook plyed Yle t ll sys something good bout the Pt future in sqush competition. Yle, s well s other "first nd second echelon" tems, hs recognized Stony Brook's improved sqush sitution. Next yer's schedule lredy hs definite commitments from such fine rcquet schools s Nvy nd Penn. But despite present improvement nd future spirtions, Mondy's mtch highlighted the mjor 'Stony Brook shortcominglck of experience. For exmple, five of Yle's strting nine were sqush strs in prep school. And these plyers, who hit the bll so fst you cn hrdly see it nd who seemingly hve no wekness, re not even in the sme clss s the' top plyers, who go to Penn nd Nvy. The Pt plyers, who were initited into the sqush circle here t Stony Brook nd show vst improvement over the two, three or four yers they plyed, cn generlly offer nothing but pride ih defense of their opponent's superior shots. As is generlly the cse, there re just so mny blls tht emotion cn retu rn nd defet is the inevitble conclusion. Grds Return Cogniznt of ll these fcts, the Ptriots clmly took the court ginst the Elis nd proceeded to drop 27 out of the 29 gmes plyed. And fter this completely expected shellcking the Pts, to mn, professed to be unimpressed. They felt tht they could hve nd should hve done better. Joe Burden moved up to number one for the Pts in the intrsqud competition nd won the Pts only two gmes. Before the holidys Bob i "Mons nd Grons" Wittmer rounded up eight of his lumni cronies nd chllenged the present tem to mnly bttle on the courts. The "good guys," fortified. by Coch Snider's secret elixir, "Sqush Punch" (which included floting sqush bll), humbled the former rcquet strs. Wittmer, s usul supremely overconfident, took the court ginst Joe Burden. Witt seemed hve left most of his gme in ft the locker room s he rn out of stem fter bout 1 minutes of moderte ctivity. His nguished grons of disgust nd stony stres of despir soon cme so often tht one lmost felt pity for this "fllen gint." Burden's workmnlike triumph ws 1614, For the lumni, big "Lump" Schultheiss showed powerful shot but mrked lck of speed in dropping the first gme to Chris Clrk 151. So in the second gme when Chris' wrist ws lmost severed from his rm by Schultheiss' rcquet, the mtch ws somewht evened. The results, however, only proved to be closer s Clrk went on to win 151, 151. "Pnd" AU Out Exsqush nd soccer str Joe "Pnd" Vn Denburg, who hs put on little weight since his plying dys, plyed with vengence ginst Krl Schmitt. continued on pge 11 Both opponents re Knick Conference rivls, nd the two wins give Stony Brook perfect 4 legue mrk. Only Hunter College remins undefeted mong the other Knick tems. nd the Pts will fce them this Sturdy night on the Hunter home court. The Ptriots journeyed to Brooklyn on Wednesdy, where they mtched the Kingsmen foul for foul nd turnover for turnover right down to the lst ten minutes of ply. With the score 3837 in fvor of the home tem, however, the Ptriots rn. off on 151 ter tht iced the sloppy gme. The finl score ws Hollie.Follows Agin it ws the defense tht sprked the lst minute surge. Brooklyn ws forced into four turnovers, nd Gerry Glssberg blocked two shots, nd Ron Hollie one, s the Ptriots moved fr into the led. Hollie ws the mn who pult the Pts out in front to sty with 9:2 left when his followup of missed shot gve Stony Brook 439 led. Bill Myrick then converted pss from Glssberg, Kerr hit on feed from Myrick, Bill scored gin off Glssberg ssist, nd Kerr mde foul shot before Brooklyn could score nother point. With 5:35 left, the Pts led 474. f the Kingsmen hd ny hope of coming bck, the freewheeling Stony Brook offense quickly put it to rest. The tem ws moving the bll too well to be cught. For the Ptriots, Keff hit gme high of 2 points, followed by Myrick with 14, nd Art Bclwski with 12. Glssberg contributed ten ssists, nd combined with Myrick to do rel job on Dennis Ozer, holding the Kingsmen's leding scorerto only four points. Top Pce t ws quite different bll gme under different circumstnces when Stony Brook knocked off Pce College, 6957, on Fridy Dec. 19. Unlike Brooklyn, the Setters were considered top Knick Conference contender, fresh off win over highly regrded Kings Point.
