1 BEAVER CHURCH CHATTER OCTOBER 2011 Beaver United Church of Christ 1960 Dayton -Xenia Road Beavercreek, OH Rev. Brian Eastman Pastor s Phone: (937) ; 24hrs7days Pastor s Pastorbrian@beaverucc.org Pastor s Office Hours: Tuesday 1 PM-6 PM Wednesday 10 AM-12 PM 5 PM-7 PM Thursday 10 AM-12 PM Address: Church@beaverucc.org or beaverucc@sbcglobal.net Web Address: Webmaster: Alice Clausing Newsletter Compiler: Bob Tobias Newsletter Contributor: Gail Wells Pastor Brian Eastman INSIDE THIS ISSUE Pastor s Peace Prayer List Church Service List Church News and Events Church Calendar THE PASTOR S PEACE The Popcorn Festival is over, the corn is gone, the roasters are cleaned out, and we ended the festival with around $3,200 in sales. It was another successful Popcorn Festival, and another successful fundraiser. Of course it could have been a bit better in terms of sales. As anyone who was there will tell you, Sunday was super-duper, amazingly busy. We were selling corn left and right; chicken and noodles were flying out of there as fast as we could spoon them. Everything was shaping up for it to be the best Sunday of sales ever. Then at 4PM it happened. Just as the dinner crowd was coming, there was a lightning strike several miles away, and the organizers decided to shut the festival down. Talk about disappointment. I stood there looking at the coolers full of cooked corn, stood there thinking about the $500 or so in sales we would not get, and I have to admit I was a little sad. I understand that the safe thing to do was to stop the festival early, but that didn t change the fact that I was disappointed that we had worked so hard, and now we were going to miss out on a pretty sizable amount of fundraising for the church. The funny thing about disappointments, however, is that they are tied to expectations, and unfortunately these expectations are usually of our own creation. What I didn t understand at the time was that these expectations were getting in the way of something greater. Talking to Charmayne about her expectations eventually made me understand the whole situation differently. As we were getting ready to pack up, Charmayne shared with me the good news that her Candy Bouquet booth had won a ribbon for best decorated booth of that type. She didn t even know they were giving out ribbons, and she told me that even if she had not sold one bouquet that day, the fact that she won that ribbon made the whole thing worth while. I pondered that a bit, I guess, somewhere in the back of my brain, as we loaded everything on the truck and unloaded at the church. Continued on page 5 BEAVER CHURCH Chatter 1

5 Church News and Events Pastor s Peace continued from page 1 After all the work at the church was done, we s sat back in fellowship hall, relaxed a bit, and told stories of childhood, growing up in Beavercreek, and people from the past. I heard again about Mark Stewart, flying trash cans, and chalk bits thrown so fast and close that you could hear them whizzing by your ear. It struck me then as we sat in the basement, everyone laughing and smiling, that this was my ribbon and I didn t even know it. The fact that I got to work with, spend time with, and know the wonderful people of this church was the true blessing of that weekend. Even if we had not sold one ear of double-dipped corn, it would have been worth it. God can do a funny thing with expectations, usually when we least expect it. Thank you, everyone who helped with the Popcorn Festival. It was great as always, and I look forward to next year and more memories. Peace and Blessings, Pastor Brian Parsonage Salvage Day, October 1 st We will be meeting at the church on Saturday October 1 st, at 2PM, to salvage items from the parsonage to sell to church members or any other interested parties. 7 Church News and Events Neighbors in Need Offering Neighbors in Need (NIN) is a special mission offering of the UCC that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry(CAIM). Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries(JWM) to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects. Beaver UCC will receive the NIN offering on November 6, 2011 as part of the denomination s Mission 1 campaign to help the hungry here in the United States and across the world. I would like to tell you about my personal experience with Neighbors in Need. About 6 years ago Stuart and I were the Interim Pastors of First Congregational UCC in Las Vegas, Nevada. FCCUCC was and still is a small member, financially struggling church as are most of our UCC churches in the United States. It was also a church deeply committed to helping those who lived in the neighborhood of North Las Vegas where the church was located. They already participated in a bread distribution program that was headquartered at the church. Each week several members and friends would pick up day-old bread from a local grocery and bring it back to the church for distribution. It seemed like a logical extension to that program to also offer a food pantry at the church. Several of the members were very interested in being part of that project so we began raising funds and gathering food to be distributed once a month at the church. We located a food distribution warehouse that sold cases of food for a low price per pound. We only had two problems; our space was limited and our resources were even more limited. So.we applied to Justice and Witness ministries and the Neighbors in Need fund for assistance and we were granted a check for $ That doesn t seem like much, but for that food pantry, it was a life saver. It gave a solid foundation from which to operate. The Pantry is still going strong and now includes a used clothing and household items store, which today funds much of its costs. Because of the grant from Neighbors in Need, we were able to begin a ministry that serves hundreds of families each month. Gail Wells BEAVER CHURCH Chatter 7
8 Church News and Events Mission 1 From 11/1/11 to 11/11/11 our denomination is asking that we participate in a mission called Mission 1 to help those who are hungry, both here and across the world. We will have more information about this in our November newsletter. For now, here is some information from the UCC about the major goals for the mission. In 11 days, the United Church of Christ will collect more than 1 MILLION ITEMS OF HEALTHY FOOD and other household items for local food banks and outreach services. In 11 days, the United Church of Christ will make an extra-special push to gather online contributions of more than $111,111 DOLLARS for Neighbors in Need, offerings that will be shared for hunger-action purposes with agencies of justice and compassion throughout the United States. In 11 days, the United Church of Christ will offer more than 11,111 LETTERS to Congress asking our government to reform U.S. foreign assistance in a way that more effectively benefits hungry and poor people worldwide, helping to provide a ma- To Jim and Jeri Hawker on the birth of Colton, their great-grandson.
