Meyer finsec15199@gmail.com District Deputy Report July 2014 Volume 2, Issue 1 Brother Knights, I m humbled and honored that our State Deputy Richard Espinosa has reappointed me as District Deputy for New Mexico District 3. I pray we have a great Fraternal Year As we begin the new Columbian Year, I want to thank the District 3 Council Officers for all the support you have shown me during the past 7 months. I also want to take the opportunity to thank the District 3 members for the hard work you have put in during the Fraternal Year. I look forward to working with our incoming officers and I want to assure you that I m here to help you in any way I can. We have an addition to District 3 this year. I want to take the opportunity to welcome my home council, Our Lady of Incarnate Word Council 15199, to District 3. Brothers, I m constantly bragging to fellow Knights about what a great District we are. Therefore, I m asking our members to work as a team. I m not just talking as a council team; I m talking a district team. I ve listed contact information to the left of this report for us to communicate with each other. I first thought of District 3 working as a team during Fr. Chris Bernabe s Thanksgiving Mass. We had members from Prince of Peace Council present with some members participating in the Honor Guard. We had the Paul Peter Gojdic Council choir and we had Fr. John Carney, Chaplain from Our Lady of Incarnate Word Council giving a wonderful Homily. We have a great pool of experienced members and I m confident that working together we can achieve our goals. I envision 6 of 6 Star Councils at the end of June I have some ideas and strategies that I will discuss during the District 3 Organizational Meeting in August. Since five of the District 3 councils are in the North East quadrant of Albuquerque, I have invited Grand Knight David Martinez from my home council in Rio Rancho to travel with me during my council visits. I want him to meet members and get familiar with the council locations. In Closing, I wish you a great Columbian Year. Have a wonderful and safe Independence Day. I hope to visit your Councils and install the new officers soon. Vivat Jesus! Samuel Serna, DD3 Inside this issue: District Deputy Report 1 Guiding Principles 1 Our Mission 1 Fr. 2 Message from Council Chaplain Father John Carney People love theirs priests. They really do. In the past few weeks I attended two ordinations at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis in Santa Fe. The basilica was packed for both occasions. Three priests were ordained, four transitional deacons and eleven permanent deacons. Many priests attended the ordinations and as they processed out of the basilica, I noticed that they were literally mobbed by the people. Hugs, kisses, handshakes and requests for blessings followed. The priests were greeted by not only their current parishioners but especially by former parishioners from previous assignments. I said to myself, "see how we are loved." Sometimes people ask me if I am lonely. I tell them that I am the least lonely person they know. I have a family that numbers in the many hundreds. There are so many families with whom I have shared their most intimate moments: being with their loved ones at the final hour of life; sad and sometimes joyous funerals; happy weddings and baptisms; inspired days of First Holy Communions and Confirmations; times of tragedy and grief; and even the "ordinary time" of life. What is it about a priest? Well, of course, it's the Christ he represents and brings to the people. We know that he is the Alter Christus who acts in persona Christi. But he is also a man; a mortal, imperfect and vulnerable human being just like themselves. The people of God see the priest in both lights. They see and love the Christ and they see and love the man who is His priest. Hopefully, the two are inseparable, at least most of the time. God bless Fr. John Fr. Carney posing with Assembly 3309 Honor Guard Message from Paul Peter Gogdic Council by Sir Knight Billy Tapia Brother Knights, I'd like to request the Color Guard be present for the Pontifical High Mass in the Extraordinary Form with His Excellency Archbishop Michael Sheehan on July 7, 2014 at St. Thomas Aquinas. This will be a historical Mass because, from our research, this is the first Mass of this kind to be celebrated by the Archbishop in the Archdiocese since the close of the Second Vatican Council. The Archdiocese is flying out 3 priests and 2 brothers from the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius in Chicago, Illinois to assist and coordinate the Mass. Two days later the Archbishop is required by Canon Law to submit his letter of resignation on his 75th birthday. THIS COULD BE HIS LAST GREAT ACT AS ARCH- BISHOP. I cannot overemphasize the magnitude of this event. We would like to fill the church with Knights of Columbus to show to the faithful there that the Knights support the Tradition of the Church and show that the Knights are behind the Archbishop every step of the way. It would be a joyous occasion to demonstrate the prayerful presence of a train of Knights processing in with His Excellency. If you are able to attend, excellent! Please let me know so I can arrange adequate seating in the front of the church for you all. If you are not able to attend, please let your family and friends know about this historic Mass. There will be several advertisements in these next couple of weeks, but we can always use help in getting the word out - to your family, friends, and even your parishes. We would also like to ask that you please include us in your list of intentions when you pray your daily Rosary - the good Lord knows we need all the prayers we can get! Thank you all for your generous help! May God reward you! Sincerely in Christ through Mary, Billy Tapia (505) billytapia93@yahoo.com "Mary and her Knights! A team beyond compare!" 3 The Immaculate Conception Prayer Program The Immaculate Conception Prayer Program began August 7 at the 131st Supreme Convention in San Antonio, Texas. This program features an image of Mary as the Immaculate Conception, which is a copy of the original painting that is housed in the Cathedral Basilica Notre-Dame de Quebec in Canada. The church and the Archdiocese of Quebec are celebrating their 350th anniversary in The Immaculate Conception Prayer Program is the 16th Marian Prayer Program sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, beginning with the first program honoring Mary under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe - in In preparation for the 1982 Centennial of the Order, the second prayer program was initiated, which also highlighted the Immaculate Conception. Since then, the Blessed Mother has been honored by her Knights under her titles of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Our Lady of Czestochowa, Our Lady of Pochaiv, Our Lady of the Assumption, Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Charity. These Orderwide programs of Marian Prayer have gathered together more than 16 million people at some 140,000 prayer services conducted at local councils and parishes. Source: Message from the NM State Family Director A Family Prayer Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of our family. Enlighten our hearts and minds that we may live more fully this vocation to love. In our daily life and work, may we reflect the self-giving love which you, O Father, eternally show with your Son and the Holy Spirit. Let your love be evident in the peace that reigns in our home and in the faith we profess and live. may our family always be a place of generosity, understanding, forgiveness and joy. Kindly give us the wisdom and courage to be witnesses to your eternal design for the family; and grant that the Holy family of Nazareth may always guide our path to holiness as a family. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever Amen. Page 3 K of C NEW MEXICO DISTRICT 3 NEWSLETTER

6 Prayer for the Canonization of Father Michael J. McGivney God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Knights of Columbus is the world s largest Catholic family fraternal service organization with 1.7 million members. It provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, their communities, families and young people. Thanks to the efforts of Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary s Church in New Haven and some of his parishioners, the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity. Knight s Prayer Who are the Knights of Columbus? Our Lady, Queen of the Knights, bless all the activities of our Order. Keep us true to our pledge, to extend the kingship of thy divine son on earth. Through Thine intercession, win for us the grace, ever to exemplify in our public and private lives, the virtues that should characterize those especially dedicated to the service of the heavenly court. Make us always aware that as your Knights, we are constantly observed, our faith judged, and our Order appreciated. Accept, O Mary, this renewed pledge of fealty and devotion, of Thy Servants, the Knights of Columbus. K of C NEW MEXICO DISTRICT 3 NEWSLETTER Page 6

7 Retention - Proposer Involvement Proposing a new member is a commendable achievement and one in which to take much pride. However, as a proposer, turning over a completed Membership Document (Form #100) is not the end of the job but a beginning. You must also take the responsibility to see that your recruit becomes fully accepted by his fellow council members and stays involved in council activities. Don't let your new member become "The Guy" (the poem) who never came back. There are several steps you can take to ensure this. Explain to him that the council's Admission Committee will examine his qualifications for membership and accompany him to the Admission Committee meeting. Introduce him to the members present. After he has been accepted, escort him to his First Degree and remain with him throughout the event. Following the exemplification, introduce him to his fellow council members. Take the newly initiated member and his family "under your wing". See that he learns council procedures, such as meeting times, committee assignments, etc. Introduce him and his family at council events. Encourage him to involve his family in council-sponsored activities. Accompany your recruit to his Second Degree and Third Degree exemplifications and stay with him throughout the day. Contact him before each council meeting and bring him to the meeting if necessary. If the new member becomes inactivate for some reason, try to find out why. Call and ask to visit with him. Explain your concern about his absence and offer support or assistance. Encourage him to earn "Shining Armor" status within the council. If the Knight becomes inactive, his proposer should work with the retention committee to find out the reasons for his lapsed interest and try to conserve his membership. The proposer should be a part of the "We Miss You" visit. With a little personal effort you can help guarantee that your recruit becomes an active member of the Knights of Columbus and a lifelong friend & brother. I m the Guy (Author Unknown) I m the guy who asked to join your organization. I m the guy who paid his dues to join. I m the guy who stood up in front of you and promised to be faithful and loyal. I m the guy who came to your meetings and no one paid attention to. I tried several times to be friends, but they all had their own buddies to talk to and sit next to. I sat down several times, but no one paid any attention to me. Source: I hoped very much that someone would have asked me to take part in a fund raising project or something, but no one saw my efforts when I volunteered. I missed a few meetings after joining because I was sick and couldn t be there. No one asked me at the next meeting where I had been. I guess it didn t matter very much to others whether I was there or not. The next meeting, I decided to stay home and watch TV. The following meeting, I attended, but no one asked me where I was for the last meeting. You might say I m a good guy or a good family man who holds a responsible job and loves his community and country. You know who else I am? THE GUY WHO NEVER CAME BACK. It amuses me how the heads of organizations and the members discuss WHY the organization is losing members. It amuses me to think that they spend so much time looking for NEW members when I was there all the time. All they need to do was make me feel needed, wanted, and WELCOME! 8 Duties of Council Officers Welcome New District 3 Officers Brother Knights, I ve published these Duties of Council Officers for the past 3 months in preparation for Council elections. It may seem redundant information for some of us, but very useful information for the incoming officers. Keep in mind this is just a snap shot of the officer roles and responsibilities, which does not supersede the ones published by Supreme. I invite you to visit the Supreme Website at: index.html. You will find digital resources to help you during your term in office. Please work as a team. If there are any questions or concerns, please don t hesitate to call me. I m here to help resolve any issues or concerns. Sam Serna, DD 3 Grand Knight: The Grand Knight is elected by the membership. The Grand Knight is responsible for the welfare of the council.
