1 F r. S o l a n u s C a s e y C o u n c i l St Margaret's of Scotland Church Mile Road St Clair Shores, Mi frsolanuscasey@hotmail.com J ANUARY 2019 Knights Line GRAND KNIGHT S COLUMN Brother Knights, Vivat Jesus! & Happy New Year Can you believe another Year begins. Are You one for New Years Resolutions? I m really not one, but will continually challenge myself to be a better Brother Knight. If you haven t paid your dues yet I hope you will consider our two Fraternal Charities. First the Take Ten Program that supports all the Charities that our Michigan State K of C supports, and second, the Sacred Heart Major Seminary Scholarship Fund. This helps Seminarians with financial challenges they face during their journey to Priesthood. At the December Meting I was Blessed to be able to give all Brother Knights in attendance a Blessed Father Solanus Casey Badge. They were donated by a Ms. Cathryn Ladda that runs the Senior Group here at St. Margaret. She makes them for the Fr. Solanus Guild and asked Fr. Richard if it would be ok to give them to the Knights for Christmas. Many Thanks to her & God Bless her for what she does. Additional hand outs included a brochure that outlines How to say the Rosary including all the Mysteries, and a card with all the Advent events and Masses here at St. Margaret, and I personally invite all to attend the many Masses during the Christmas Season. We discussed the 1 st Annual Knights of Columbus Advent Retreat, held at St. Paul Retreat House. Twenty-six Knights from the Archdioceses attended. Two Knights from our Council attended. Myself and Carl Giordano. We both thoroughly enjoyed the weekend retreat and will invite all Brother Knights to mark their calendar for next year. A few things we pondered at the retreat: Lord. Bless My Brother Knight that most needs your help God can make a way where there is no way God doesn t call the equipped, God equips those who are called and Get Ready for your final exam. If you have never attended a retreat, I really believe you will find it worthwhile and would love to talk to you about it. In addition and in response to our Break Out Sessions, our Fellow Knights and our Council will be Praying the Rosary before meetings. So this month at 6 pm in the St. Margaret Chapel, we will be saying the Rosary. All are invited. At the meeting we talked about Keep Christ in Christmas and sales of yard sign and magnets. Thanks to Brother Knights who participated at all the Masses. We talked about Breakfast with Santa. This is our Children s Christmas Party held in conjunction with St. Margaret s Men s Club, who have been having this Pancake Breakfast and Pictures with Santa event for over 40 years. Our Council picks up the costs for all attending Brother Knights, their children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, etc. We hope next year more Brother Knights will attend. We were Blessed to have our Chaplin Fr. Ron DeHondt in attendance. His reverence and guidance is always an inspiration to our Council. Continued on page 2
2 GRAND KNIGHT S COLUMN Continued Our Worthy District Deputy Ken Warzybok brought us greetings and Merry Christmas from our State Officers and informed us of upcoming State and District events. Our Worthy Recorder read correspondence that included a Thank You from St. Frances Camp for our donation from our last Texas Holdem. This Year we as a council distributed twenty-one Christmas Baskets to Widows, Orphans, and needy families. It is our Duty and Honor and we are Blessed to be able to do this Worthy work. God Bless the Knights that identify and provide these baskets to our recipients. Special Thanks to Chancellor Mike Weiss and Recorder Alwyn Wunderlich for their dedication to this program. Our December Texas Holdem Tournament was another success. Brother Knights, please be advised that this is our single biggest fundraiser and is continually manned by many of the same Knights. New Brother Knights Jim Parrinello and Mark VanGheluwe were a great addition to the team. God Bless them for what they do, but we need some additional Brother Knights to step up and lighten the load. Next Texas Holdem is in March. So come on down. Special Thanks to John Kelleher. He continues to Chair this program and does a great job of it. Thank You John and his wife Linda, who puts up with him. By the time you read this our Annual December Blood Drive here at St. Margaret will be over. I don t know the results but do know again it s the same Brother Knights that have made this program a success. I continue to pray the Good Lord will send a few good Knights to help out. NEW SHIRTS: The New Shirts are in and it was good to see so many of them in display at the meeting. They are the same Brown that Fr. Solanus wore. Along with Gold Trim and his likeness on the sleeve. Shirts are $35.00 and can be ordered at any meeting. Under Good of the Order, Fr. Ron led us in a Decade of the Rosary for: John & Barbara Smith, Frank Baniszewski, Gerry & Beverly Wilczynski, Caroyln & Shane Johnson, Dee VanSummer, Anna Giordano, Marty Joseph, Frances Burger, Ken Weber and our Brother Knights and their Families. Brother Knight Jim Wietecha won the 50/50 for $24.00 and the Progressive Drawing would have been won by #159 Michael Novak if he had only been there. In Closing I Thank all my Brother KNIGHTS who participate in the many programs and events our Council is involved in. I continue to invite all my Brother Knights to become more involved in the meetings, many programs and events our Council sponsors. Just ask a Brother Knight if he enjoyed the last Event he Volunteered for Committed to and Showed Up for. PS. Don t forget the Rosary before the General Membership meeting in St. Margaret Chapel at 6 pm. Sincerely & Humbly Your Grand Knight Paul Desjardins, Vivat Jesus!

Knights of Columbus BENEFITS NEWS Insurance check-up for 2019 Can you believe it will soon be 2019? I hope that 2018 was a healthy, prosperous year for you and your family. It s said that time flies, and the older we get, the more that statement seems true. As we review the past year and prepare to welcome a new one, we wonder where the time goes. If you re like most people, you ve made some resolutions for If I may, I d like to make two suggestions regarding your resolutions. First, write them down. A resolution is really a goal for the year and, until you commit a goal to writing, it s nothing more than a wish. Writing a resolution down is the first step towards achieving it. Whether your goal is to lose weight, contribute more time and money to charity, read more or watch less television, you re more likely to accomplish it if you write it down. Second, schedule some time to visit with me, your professional Knights of Columbus insurance agent. The insurance check-up that I ll provide (free of charge, by the way!) will quickly identify any gaps in your family s life insurance program. And you ll want to fill those gaps now, not later. Because unlike many other products, you need more than money to obtain life insurance. You also need good health, and no one will ring a bell warning you when your health is about to change. Knights of Columbus life insurance offers something precious few other financial products can guarantee. As long as you pay your premiums, the policy proceeds will be there for your beneficiaries should something happen to you. We call that peace of mind, and that s (as they say in the credit card commercials) priceless. Remember, long-term care policies are underwritten based on your health, and you most likely will never be any healthier than you are today. *Receive a complete Family Needs Analysis at my expense.
