1 THE TRANSFIGURATION LAST SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church 4911 Brauer Road - Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235

2 Welcome to our worship service! In our services here at St. John we have two chief goals. Our first goal is to be built up in our faith through the only means God has given to us, the gospel found in God s Word and Sacraments. Our second goal is to give praise to God Father, Son, & Holy Spirit alone. As we seek these two goals we are equipped to carry out our mission Come, Grow, Live, and Share Christ! May the Lord bless our worship today. Guests We welcome you to St. John with joy in our hearts that you chose to worship with us today! Instructions for worship are found in the bulletin and will be announced by pastor. There is a cry room in the back of church available for parents to calm and care for their children during the service. Bathrooms are located downstairs and to the left. A changing table is available in the women s bathroom. Should you have any other questions, please speak with one of the ushers or with pastor. Today s Service The order of service is called The Common Service. It begins on page 15 in the red pew hymnal: Christian Worship. The hymns and psalm today can also be found in the hymnal. Communion at St. John At St. John we practice membership communion. That means we invite to the altar those who have expressed their agreement with the biblical teachings of this church through current membership in our congregation or other WELS or ELS congregations. Some might have questions about our practice since not every Christian congregation today practices Close Communion. For this reason, we sincerely invite you to schedule a visit with our pastor so that he may talk with you about any questions or concerns you may have. He will be more than happy to sit down with you. Use time before the service to prepare for Communion by turning to page 156 in the front of the hymnal. 3 COMMON SERVICE OPENING HYMN: Down from the Mount of Glory CW 97 Please stand and turn to page 15 in the front part of the hymnal. PRAYER OF THE DAY Lord God, before the suffering and death of your one and only Son, you revealed his glory on the holy mountain. Grant that we who bear his cross on earth may behold by faith the light of his heavenly glory and so be changed into his likeness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. FIRST LESSON: Exodus 34: When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the LORD. 30When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him. 31But Moses called to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the community came back to him, and he spoke to them. 32 Afterward all the Israelites came near him, and he gave them all the commands the LORD had given him on Mount Sinai. 33When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face. 34 But whenever he entered the LORD s presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, 35 they saw that his face was radiant. Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the LORD. PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 148 CW p. 121 SECOND LESSON: 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2 12Therefore, since we have such a veil remains when the old covenant is hope, we are very bold. 13 We are not read. It has not been removed, because like Moses, who would put a veil over only in Christ is it taken away. 15 Even his face to keep the Israelites from to this day when Moses is read, a veil gazing at it while the radiance was covers their hearts. 16 But whenever fading away. 14 But their minds were anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is made dull, for to this day the same taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the

4 Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 4:1Therefore, since through God s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. 2 Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to every man s conscience in the sight of God. VERSE OF THE DAY: Mark 9:7b Alleluia. A voice came from the cloud, This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him. Alleluia. GOSPEL: Luke 9: About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, 31 appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah. (He did not know what he was saying.) 34While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him. 36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves, and told no one at that time what they had seen. ANNOUNCEMENTS German Themed Potluck On Sunday, March 10, we will hold a German themed potluck. We ll enjoy fellowship together around some tradition German foods and be entertained with a rousing rendition of Schnitzelbank, a fun German song. We ll also be gathering free will offerings to help fund Pastor Enstad s Renewed In Grace 10th Ministry Anniversary trip to San Antonio. So far we ve raised $935 of the $1,500 needed. New Beginnings Collection Please take a bottle home and fill it with your change, or whatever money you want to help support New Beginnings a program and home that provides care, support and housing for young pregnant women who are escaping bad, even dangerous situations in their lives. The collection will end on Sunday, April 21 (Easter). Family Feud - to - Family Fueled The game show Family Feud can be fun to watch. But it s also strange when you consider the name of the game and one of the goals is to create feuding within families. Isn t there enough of that in the world already? There is always going to be conflict, and therefore feuding, when more than one sinful human being is around another. It s often very easy to see that the feud exists. It s not always so easy to say/see why it exists. It s all the more difficult to make a real plan to resolve the feud and do it. And perhaps most difficult of all to recognize and confess when you re part of the problem too. Our goal is to see the feuds in our lives, acknowledge them, and then fill our hearts and minds with the healing and motivation only God can give. In this way we ll learn to move from Family Feud to a Family Fueled to serve God and others. Sunday mornings at 9:00am beginning March 10. Cross Men Conference Crossmen Conference is a chance to be real with each other, to admit brokenness, and celebrate the forgiveness, strength, love and identity that are ours in Christ Jesus. The world doesn t need perfect men with perfect lives. There will always be more than enough men willing to fake it. The world, the church, our loved ones all need and we need to know ourselves as men of the cross. Crossemen Conference will be held at St. John, Two Rivers on March 16. For more information and to register, go to crossmenconf.org Conference cost is $25 for early bird.

7 Funeral Luncheon Changes Due to the time commitment and lower numbers of available help, ham and egg salad sandwiches prepared by the women of the congregation for a funeral luncheon will no longer be an option. It has been decided that arranging volunteers for desserts, and volunteers for setup, service, and clean up is what is best handled by the congregation. Meals, therefore, will need to be catered in as often happens through Econo Food and the like. Midweek Lent Worship It s finally just around the corner. Midweek Lent worship will begin with Ash Wednesday on March 6. Services will be at our usual 10:00 am and 6:30 pm. If our times do not work for your schedule, you can also worship at 11:00 am - St. Peter 10:00 am & 6:30pm - 6:00 pm. Kindergarden Roundup Kindergarten round-up at Zion Lutheran school will be Tuesday, March 5th from 9-10 AM. This is an opportunity for you and your child can see what happens in kindergarten at Zion. If you have questions you can call School at or contact Mrs. Kris Lindemann at Grief Support Group Griefshare is a weekly seminar and support group designed to help you rebuild your life after losing a loved one. Our group is led by caring people who have experienced grief and want to help you through the difficult days ahead. We know it hurts, and we want to help.
