November 2013 My Dear Franciscan Friends, Liturgically, the Sundays in November begin with our All Saints Day celebration and end with Christ the King. Originally, All Saints was a day set aside to commemorate the martyrs in the early persecutions whose names went unrecorded, and who therefore were not, and could not be, included by name on the day of their martyrdoms. Later, and to this day, All Saints picked up the theme found in the New Testament that all baptized Christians are called saints, hagoioi, holy ones. Even in writing to the Corinthians, who are castigated for the worst moral offenses, Paul calls them saints. (1Cor. 1:2), meaning that they are not just called to be saints but that they are the holy ones of God. MICHAEL MOULDEN RECTOR The sanctity of the holy ones is not, therefore, the product of moral achievement, but rather is the triumph of God s grace in their lives through baptism. All Saints reminds us of the extraordinary activity of God in the ordinary actions of each baptized person. The timing of All Saints in the calendar of the church year marks a transition in the season of Pentecost. The emphasis shifts during these last Sundays of the year from growing in grace to the last things and the final triumph of God. The consummation of history does not end either on a high note of human achievement, nor does it go out without a whimper. Rather, Christ the King Sunday holds up the Christian hope of a Cosmic Christ whose reign begins in a new way when all the enemies of God have been subjected under his feet. This eschatological hope is lifted up by the Book of Revelation which describes the destruction of death and evil, the absence of crying out in pain and agony for the former things have passed away. Thus, All Saints and Christ the King offer two themes we might ponder during November in our prayer lives. On the one hand, do we really understand the trust and power given to us by God to share in God s capacity to reign in the power called love? On the other, what would life be like if lived in total freedom from the fear of evil and death? Peace, Michael

F R O M R EV. R O B E R T B L A C K It is often said that there are four major feast days on the Church calendar (though the Prayer Book suggests a few others). Christmas and Easter, you ve likely heard of; and Pentecost should sound familiar as well. The fourth is All Saints Day. Unfortunately, the significance of the day is often lost amidst the costumes and corn mazes. It is a day in which we celebrate the fact that we are all united in one communion and fellowship in the Body of Jesus Christ. On this day, we also remember those Christians, who in particular, lived virtuous and godly lives. They are the saints of the Church, examples to follows, and worthy of our focus and thanks. Throughout the year, many days are designated as Lesser Feasts and commemorate a saint. You can find a calendar of these holy days online ( goo.gl/rfd8rn). Most days, you will find the name of a saint, some short ROBERT BLACK ASSISTANT RECTOR biographical information about them, and a prayer. I invite you to try living the next year with the powerful stories of these saints. You will learn much about your own faith, and God s unfolding drama in our world as you read about people such as Andrei Rublev, George Herbert, Perpetua, Frances Perkins, Enmegabowh, Jonathan Myrick Daniels, and William Temple, just to name a few. On Sunday, November 3, we ll celebrate All Saints Day at St. Francis. November 1 is the actual day of All Saints Day and November 2 is the Commemoration of All Faithful Departed (commonly referred to as All Souls Day). All Saints, properly understood, is a day to celebrate the Saints and Martyrs of the Church, those people whom the worldwide Church recognizes for their virtuous lives dedicated to the Gospel. All Souls is a day when we remember all of the departed. It is on this day that many beautiful requiem Masses are offered, as we remember our friends and loved ones who have come to a nearer presence to God in the last year. You will find that most churches tend to blend the concepts of All Saints and All Souls into their Sunday worship. However, I would invite you to consider taking a few moments on November 1 to give thanks for the Saints of the Church- for the Apostles and Church Fathers and Mothers. And then take a few moments on November 2 to remember those who have died in the past year (and perhaps listening to a nice Requiem Mass by Mozart). And then when we come together on November 3, we ll have a Baptism at one of our services as we celebrate the mystical union that we all share through our Lord Jesus Christ. We ll sing triumphant hymns about the Saints of the Church who dared to risk life itself for the Gospel. And we will remember those who have died. It will be a most holy day, and I encourage you to do a bit of this homework on November 1 and 2 to make our Sunday worship all the richer. Blessings, The Rev. Robert Black 2

F R O M A M A N D A H A R M O N Our Christian Formation programs are off to an excellent start this year! We've changed the scheduling around a bit for Children's Chapel, which now includes a snack break. This seems to be a very successful shift, and it frees up the Sunday School teachers to devote more time to their lessons as well. Attendance and enthusiasm are high, and it's a joy to see so many of our youngest members active in these spiritual formation programs. Our Middle School Sunday School class and Coffee Talk class are also doing well. These classes have leaders who are passionate about the faith of young people, and who truly value the spiritual needs of our youth at St. Francis. I want to remind everyone that there is a Christian Formation program for people of every age here at St. Francis, and I hope that you will take advantage of these terrific offerings. AMANDA HARMON DIRECTOR OF CHILDREN'S AND YOUTH MINISTRY V E S T R Y H I G H L I G H T S October 2013 The Vestry approved $5000 in Outreach funds to support the Stop Hunger Now project planned for December 8th, at 5:30 in the Parish Hall. The Annual Parish Meeting will be held Sunday, November 24th between services. Campus leaf pickup will occur on November 9th, November 23rd and December 14th. All are encouraged to lend a hand. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. The Vestry warmly welcomes new Facility Manager 3 Ken Cressman.

S T E W A R D S H I P R E P O R T Thank you all for your faithful and gracious contributions to our 2014 stewardship program. As of October 29, we have received pledges from 142 families and individuals, 7 of which were new pledges, and 47 were increased from their 2013 pledges. We realize that life circumstances change, and we are especially thankful to those who, though they had to decrease their pledge, have chosen to continue to support the mission and ministries of St. Francis. Our current pledged total for 2014 is $441,930 which is a huge step towards our goal, but we re not quite there yet. Again, thank you all so much for your pledged contributions and you'll be sure to hear more from the Stewardship Committee on how we can respond to God s blessings. If you have not yet made your 2014 pledge, know that it isn t too late to make a pledge and we look forward to hearing from you soon. There are some Franciscans who we expected to hear from, but have not yet. Pledging is not only a spiritual discipline with is helpful to you, but it also greatly assists the church in planning for the 2014 budget. F R O M T H E V E S T R Y Vestry nominations will be accepted at the Annual Meeting on November 24, Any parishioner who wishes to self-nominate or nominate another willing person for the Vestry from the floor nomination at the Annual Meeting, please make sure the person nominated has the following qualifications: 1. 7 V E S T R Y C A N D I D A T E S Jim Cox Forty-seven years ago I married Vara and soon after was confirmed at Trinity Episcopal in Columbia, SC. I had grown up a weak kneed Methodist. We have two children, and two grandchildren, all of whom live in Northern Virginia. After living 23 years in New Jersey we moved to Greensboro in My mother moved to Greensboro in her 90 s, and she truly benefited from the warmth and embrace of St. Francis. We went from your church to our church very quickly. She always said the rector at St. Francis spoke so clearly compared to her minister who mumbled, not realizing that she was wearing the hearing device we offer. At St. Andrews in South Orange, I was assistant treasurer and on the vestry and search committee at St. Paul s in Westfield. At St. Francis, I have ushered, helped with kitchen responsibilities, purchased supplies for the kitchen, sat at the reception desk in a pinch, and used my height to put up hymn numbers for services. I like the track St. Francis is on and I will to do my part to see that we become even better. We need to continually seek new members. I am an independent Sales Rep and Southeast Sales Manager for one of the companies I represent, travelling North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. I enjoy gardening and walks with Vara and Marley, our beloved golden we rescued recently. I am currently a retired business owner and Hydrobotanist, who has lived in Washington, DC, Maryland and Alabama before moving to Greensboro approximately four to five years ago. I have been a lifelong Anglican/ Episcopalian and served as an acolyte in my youth. My wife & I randomly chose to attend St. Francis as visitors after becoming new residents of this area. We were so warmly welcomed that we never considered another possible choice. Personally, I think St. Francis is very progressive in terms of its various programs, and I look forward to continued positive results. I hope I can contribute towards making the congregation a more vibrant community that attracts new and younger members. Patrick Marshall 7

V E S T R Y C A N D I D A T E S I started coming to St Francis about 17 years ago at the invitation of a current parishioner. I was raised in the Baptist Church and the Episcopal Church was of course very different than anything that I had been exposed to. I took the Living Bread classes which really introduced me to the Episcopalian Faith and the rest is history. I am very involved in several ministries: LEM s, Lay Readers, Stephen s Ministry, and the Worship Committee. I think St Francis has evolved over the years that I have been here and has become a Parish that offers options to its Parishioners. We have traditional services for those who prefer this and then there is the Parish Hall Eucharist for a less traditional service. There are Traditional Bible studies and then there are the Jewish Christian Explorations class which explores Michelle Koehler different ideas and avenues and encourages you to ask questions and think outside the box. This is a very giving community and through Outreach we have contributed to helping our neighbors in the community. How long have you been an Episcopalian? All my life but who s counting? How long have you been at St. Francis? 25 years Previous church leadership here and elsewhere. Various and sundry leadership roles including Outreach, St. Clare, Friends From St. Francis, Stephen Ministry, Shepherd s Hands, Vestry, Senior Warden, Property Committee, Discernment Committee. Claudia Reich Information about family, interests, and occupation you want to include. I love spending time with my family and especially enjoy our trips together. I also love being outside walking and appreciating flora and fauna. Your opinions about St. Francis and its programs at present. Our church has experienced several transitions some more challenging than others and we seem to come through each, perhaps stronger and wiser for the experience. Some of the programs that particularly stand out to me are: the day school, book sale, music program, office administration, property, and how we care for each other. Your dreams for St. Francis in the future. Staying relevant for our parishioners and the community, while honoring traditions; and caring for and improving our buildings and grounds. 8

V E S T R Y C A N D I D A T E S How long have you been an Episcopalian? And how long have you been at St. Francis? My family and I started going to St. Francis in late 2009, and we converted from Catholic to Episcopalian in Previous church leadership here and elsewhere. No church leadership in the past. Information about family, interests, and occupation you want to include. Family includes wife Cory, Kate age 10, Anna age 8, and Grant age 6. I am a general internist at Greensboro Medical Associates. Most of my free time is spent exercising or going to my children s events. Brian MacKenzie Your opinions about St. Francis and its programs at present. I really like where St. Francis is trying to go with its programs. In our first year here, it seemed the church had little more to offer than a place to worship each Sunday morning. I have witnessed other offerings growing each year since. My children enjoy going to Children s Chapel and Sunday school; my wife gets to relax away from the rest of us at the Women s Bible Study; while I enjoy the more cerebral Adult Forum sessions. Your dreams for St. Francis in the future. I look for St. Francis to offer a bigger variety of family-friendly events in the future and would like to explore how this could be done. One simple way would be to explore what other churches (Episcopalian or not) are doing in this area. 10 T R E A S U R E R S Q U A R T E R L Y R E P O R T The following is a brief summary of the third quarter and Year to Date financial reports for St. Francis Episcopal Church: September ANNUAL YTD YTD YTD ACTUAL BUDGET ACTUAL BUDGET VARIANCE Revenues $40,424 $647,200 $407,549 $423,790 ($16,240) Expenses 51, , , ,850 39,615 Net Margin ($7,012) ($13,694) ($48,736) ($72,061) $23,325 The month of September was not a good month for revenues received. We received $40,424 in revenues, however, we spent $51,709 in expenses, leaving a negative margin for the month of ($7.012). Expenses for the month continued to be well within budget. Through the first 9 months of the year, we took in $407,549 in revenue and expended $456,285 in expenses yielding a negative margin of ($48,736). However, compared to the budget, we were under revenue by ($16,240) and well under the expense budget by $39,615. So, we have some room to make up in the Revenues for the year, but the Expenses are well under budget for the year. The expense picture is very good news which I anticipate will hold for the rest of the year. Please note that a comparison of YTD actual with the annual budget is difficult, especially for revenues, as revenues are budgeted to anticipate greater revenues in the last half of the year. The Day School financial report showed a net margin of a negative ($3,009) through the first 3 months of the school year. The revenues were $26,340 and the expenses were $29,349. This early loss in the school year is normal and will be made up during the year. A final budget has been established for this school year and it is essentially a breakeven budget. The budget is based on 72 students this year as contrasted with 78 students last year. Currently we have 66 students and hope to sign up more in the near future. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns (barryde1@triad.rr.com.) Dennis 10

Through collaborative efforts with community and health agencies, patients and their families can make well-informed choices and have access to many significant resources. We know that our community is committed to taking care of its own. We have a goal to ensure that not one breast cancer patient feels alone or without adequate resources. You can help make a difference in their lives and the lives of their families. With your help, we can sustain a program of excellence in breast cancer patient care. Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test Breast cancer has not been stopped. Most breast cancer is in the body five to eight years before it can be detected through current methods. Earlier detection may prevent invasive surgery, minimize treatment and dramatically increase survival chances. Our single mission is the discovery of an innovative biological test to detect breast cancer earlier. Help us get there. Earlier. Sooner. Now. THE FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE The Fellowship Committee is continuing to create new opportunities for fellowship within our church community. Listed here are a few dates you should plan on keeping on your calendars for events we are planning, or are supporting and want to spread awareness. 14 S T. F R A N C I S S O F T B A L L Led by awesome coach Robert McDowell, the St. Francis softball team crushed previous year performances this year with a record breaking 4 wins. Overcoming obstacles like sun in the eyes, sweltering heat, bugs in the outfield and slippery nighttime grass, they rose above it all, came together as a team and not only played a strong season, but had a great time. We hope you will join us in celebrating this success by coming out to cheer for us next year. Go Team! 14

B OO B A S H The Boo Bash was a huge success this year! Thank you to everyone who came out to support the EYC in this annual event, it was great to see so many of our wonderful Franciscans there! The costumes were excellent, the games were a blast, and of course, our youngest members were adorable. 15
