1 April 25, 2018 The mission of First United Methodist Church of Silsbee is to glorify God, make disciples, and transform lives in Christ Dear Friends, May is just around the corner and we have had some unusually cool weather with spring-like temperatures! Now, I am not complaining but I must admit it has caused me to have a feeling of uncertainty about when it will end. Despite the cool, I continue to believe somehow that higher temperatures are coming any day. As I live in and observe the world around me, it seems that many people are faced with the uncertainty of violence, ill health, housing, job pressures, and a feeling of continuing trouble. In a way, you could lump all of these issues under the heading of burdens. Burdens are those things which can strike anyone at anytime in any situation and in any form. The shocking fact is, it can happen to believers or unbelievers. Burdens are an equal opportunity offender. Regardless of who you are or what your situation may be, we need to somehow face them and deal with them. As Christians, we do have some resources. The Apostle Paul, whose life was often filled with tremendous burdens, wrote these words in the Book of Philippians, Chapter 4, Verses 4-9. Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. Don t worry about anything; instead pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. If you do this, you will experience God's peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. And now, dear brothers and sisters, let me say one more thing as I close this letter. Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned from me and heard from me and saw me doing, and the god of peace will be with you! May your burdens be light! Pastor David P.S. 4 Presentation of Single Board on May 3 First UMC will hear about a new administrative opportunity on May 3 at 6:00 p.m. in Cravens Hall. Rev. Doug Caldwell of Wesley UMC in Nederland and a Silsbee native, will make a detailed explanation on the Single Board concept. This potential change will streamline and enhance the ministries of our church. All persons are encouraged to attend. SPRING CLEAN UP / FIX UP DAY Saturday May 5, 9:00 am We will begin with coffee, orange juice, and donuts in Cravens Hall at 9:00 a.m., and we expect to have all work completed by 2:00 p.m. We will be addressing the following issues: Parsonage: Fix broken lattice work, door on out building, rotting boards on back side of garage, inspect and fix awning on back of parsonage (please bring ladder) Church Property: Power wash various locations (please bring washer, hoses, and necessary cords if you have one) Mission Opportunity to support Teacher Appreciation Week May 7-11 The membership of First UMC Silsbee hs an opportunity to honor the Teachers of Silsbee High. We are asking each person who decided to participate to make a cast donation from $5.00 to $ The money collected will be used to purchase gift cards from Sonic for our high school teachers. Please have all donations turned in by Monday, May 7. Mother s Day Celebration on May 13 All Moms will be honored at both the 9:00 a.m. and the 11:00 a.m. services on Sunday, May 13. One way of remember your mom is to purchase a Hydrangea for $25 with the money benefitting our Children s Ministry Shoebox Mission Project. The deadline for ordering the flowers is Tuesday, May 8. 5 VBS Volunteers Needed VBS is scheduled for July We are on the lookout for some great rafting guides to lead us on our Rolling River Rampage: 1. Registration/Sign-in: Adults to help register new participants and sign in registered ones each morning 2. Story Teller: Teach the VBS Bible Story of the day and accompanying lesson 3. Pre-K class: Lead a selfcontained class of 3-4 year olds throughout their activities 4. Teen Leaders: Accompany each age group between activities, assigned to assist the adults in activities 5. Floaters: Adults to assist where needed each day 6. Decorating Committee: Work prior to VBS to plan, organize and decorate the Dauphin Room and McDonough Hall Feeling called to help? First UMC to Recognize and Honor Graduating Seniors on April 29 On Sunday, April 29, First UMC will honor Paula Boothman, Jackson Hardy, Neeleigh Smith, and their families in one worship service at 11:00 a.m. Sunday will be held at 10:00 a.m. as usual. Camp Registration Now Available! Summer camp is fast approaching and we have collected the necessary information that you will need to register your campers online! 1. Visit 2.
