1 May 30, 2018 The mission of First United Methodist Church of Silsbee is to glorify God, make disciples, and transform lives in Christ Dear Friends, Well, the month of June brings about many changes for us. Hurricane season begins, graduations take place and vacations are being planned and taken. The one change which will affect us the most is the oppressive heat of 95 to 100 degrees with heat indexes up to 115 degrees Fahrenheit. With all of these changes we are faced with a couple of things that will not change. Those two things are that the church will still be open during the summer and we are still called to live Christian lives despite how the world may act. In Paul s letter of Colossians Chapter 3, verses (CEB version), he says the following: Therefore, as God s choice, holy and loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Be tolerant with each other and, if someone has a complaint against anyone, forgive each other. As the Lord forgave you, so also forgive each other. And over all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. The peace of Christ must control your hearts a peace into which you were called in one body. And be thankful people. The key phrase from verse 15 is what controls our hearts With the heat, our busy schedules, relationship conflicts, and other disturbances, how do we stay in God s control? The following is a part which I left out of a recent sermon. It might help us. Who will I send to the grieving parents who have lost a child? Who will I send to the shut-in who has no transportation to visit the doctor? Who will I send to teach our children my ways? Who will I send to the fatherless child? Who will I send to those without hope in prison? Who will I send to the isolated aged in the nursing home? Who will I send to the sick and the infirm? Who will I send to my next-door neighbor? Who will I send to the friend who needs intervention? Who will I send? Go, then, to the people. May we join in being sent! Pastor David Special One Time Offering on June 17th Have you noticed how much concrete we have at First UMC and how dirty it is in the parking lots and on the buildings? In fact, we have 32,555 square feet of parking lot concrete not counting the dirty and moldy areas on the lower part of our buildings. Well if you agree, we have an upcoming opportunity to address it all! For just $4778, (15 cents per square foot), SETX Pro Wash will clean it all. If you want to help, on June 17 at the 9:00 am and 11:00 am services, we will take up a special one-time offering to see this project completed. We, as a church, can raise the money and make it happen!

4 Single Board Church Administration Adoption on June 24 On May 3, Rev. Doug Caldwell of Wesley UMC, Nederland presented the components necessary to move from an Administrative Council system to a Single Board system. On June 24 at 10:00 am in Cravens Hall, everyone is encouraged to gather together and vote on this new, efficient administrative system. Prior to June 24, contact Bill Voigtman at bvoigtman@republicservices.com for information about the Single Board System. Rolling River Rampage VBS July 9-13 First UMC is planning an awesome VBS for All children 3 years old through 5th grade are urged to attend. To register, call the church office at or register online at Each day will begin at 8:30 am with a time for registration, and then Vacation Bible will begin at 9:00 am. Each day will conclude at 12:00 pm. All sessions will be held in McDonough Hall. If you can help out in any way, please contact our VBS Director, Sue Penry, at scpenry@att.net, and she will provide you with a list of volunteer opportunities. Summer at Lakeview June The annual Southeast District will be held June in Palestine, Texas. The process to register youth entering 3rd grade through 12th grade is now online at First UMC is paying for half of the total fee, and the family is responsible for the other half. This means the church will pay $200, and the family will pay $200. Adults who serve as counselors will be paid for, and it will be no cost to them. If you need more information on how to register your child, please contact Jennifer in the church office at Holy Communion on June 3 Start your Summer 2018 off at First UMC Silsbee with Holy Communion at both the 9:00 am and 11:00 am services on Sunday, June 3. Remember, the church will be here for you and your family all summer long!

5 First UMC Remembers Martha LuAnn Watson and her family. We celebrated her life in our sanctuary on April 28. Erin Caroline Donalson and her family. We celebrated her life in our sanctuary on May 17. Arline Caroline Lastovica and her family. Mother of Joyce Self. Passed away on May 26. Her life was celebrated at the Infant Jesus Catholic Church in Lumberton on May 30. Lauren Kuebodeaux Selected as New Nursery Coordinator for First UMC On May 14, the SPPRC of First UMC was pleased to select Lauren Kuebodeaux as the director of our church s nursery. Lauren is a 2013 graduate of Silsbee High and a current student at Lamar University with an anticipated 2019 graduation with a Education Early Childhood degree. She has been employed as a teacher with All Faiths Day since The nursery of First UMC is open on Sunday mornings for both worship services and for other fellowship or service times. We are so glad to have Lauren join the staff of first UMC! Honor Your Dad by Bringing Him to on June 17th All are invited to celebrate Father s Day in worship at First UMC on June 17. Pastor David will preach a special message geared for men and Father s Day gifts will be presented. First UMC s Annual Acolyte to be held June Dagma Murphy, Acolyte coordinator for First UMC, invites all children from 3rd grade to high school to join her from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm each day to learn about the exciting and meaningful role of acolytes in our church. These training sessions will take place the week of June Our acolytes serve year round at the 11:00 am service and other special services.
