St. John the Baptist Council May 2015 Grand Knight s Report The Knight s Lecture Series talk on Church-State law by William Stanmeyer, Esq. took place on April 21. His talk focused heavily on guarantees under our constitution for religious freedom, state s rights, and privacy. For those that missed the talk, a recording is available, courtesy of DGK Andy Michaels. The Knight s Mass was at 5 PM on April 18, followed by dinner at the El Andariego Restaurant in Ashton, MD. As the happy faces below show, all had a great time. Once again we thank PGK Jack Sherman for making the arrangements. William Stanmeyer, Esq. (seated at left), Roger Whelan (at podium) and partial audience Left to right: Meg and Bob Frank, PGK Mike Johns, John Bowen, Joe Kaiser, Harry Dudley, DGK Andy Michaels, Glenn Heinle, Chris Oyobio, Rob Farrell, PGK Jack Sherman Left to right: Arlene and Jim McGarrity, Rita Wendorf, Jack Sherman, Maria Legato, Kevin Lynch, Lynn, Paul and Bill Godfrey, Al and Judy Shanefelter, Bob and Meg Frank, Julian and Idi McConnie, Linda and Alan Cecilio, Ramon Bueno (Bill Legato taking the picture) DGK Andy Michaels, SK Ramon Bueno and GK Bill Legato attended the State Convention in Ocean City on May 1, 2 and 3. They were accompanied by Lady Maria Legato and Lady Terri Bueno. All had a great

time attending the many programmed events. Maria and Terri brought food for the hospitality suite, and helped with the setup and take down after the convention. A Message from your Financial Secretary Alan Cecilio Left to right: SK Ramon and Terri Bueno, GK Bill and Maria Legato, GK Virgilio and Julieta Verzosa, DGK Andy Michaels A tradition at each of these conventions is the Grand Knight s Olympics, where each District competes for a prize to be donated to charity. Under the leadership of DD Tom Kelly, our District won first place, and donated its $500 prize to St. Francis International School. Left to right: DD Tom Kelly, SD Stephen Adamczyk, PSD Joseph Sauro, GK Steve Holowenzak, GK Bill Legato, PGK Jim Robertson, GK Frank Cavaliere A collection was taken at the final meeting of the conference to be used for the purchase of a sonogram machine. $2271 was collected this year. 14 sonogram machines have been donated to pregnancy centers by the Knights of Columbus in Maryland since the program started, and 6 more are expected this year. Supreme will match funds collected by State. Each sonogram machine costs about $25,000. Finally, we launch the Parish Baby Bottle Campaign this weekend. Help is still needed in distributing the empty baby bottles after each Mass. Please call or GK Bill Legato ( , wmlegato@verizon.net) if you are willing to help. Vivat Jesus! GK Bill Legato When you read this, it will already be May How time does fly. The current Fraternal Year is winding down, and our Council has the opportunity to qualify for STAR COUNCIL again. All we need is for two of 59 Associate Members to step up and add a KofC Annuity or Insurance Policy to their portfolio to reach STAR COUNCIL. The 53 brothers who are Insurance Members have already stepped up and have been counted, so we do not count in this year s statistics. If you are interested in KofC Insurance, or in starting an annuity (for as little as $300), please call our Fraternal Benefits Advisor, David Luksic, today to get the pertinent details and start the required paperwork. To count toward STAR COUNCIL, new policies/annuities must be in effect before June 30, 2015, and it takes time to process applications, especially toward the end of the Fraternal Year. You can call David Luksic at Your Council needs contact information for two of its members: Rev. Fr. Cosmas Ozoagu, and Franklin Price. If you have current phone number, , or street address for either of these two brothers, please advise your Financial Secretary so he can update their records. Thought you should know that Supreme has revised the Form 100 Membership Document. The new version, which can be used immediately, and must be used beginning July 1, 2015, is half the size and can be used anywhere. Gone is the full page Maryland specific version of the Form 100. I should have

a supply of the new forms later this month. I have a few copies at the moment, so if you are bringing in a new candidate for membership and want to use this simpler form, let me know and I will get a copy to you. activities. The State Deputy Stephen J. Adamczyk was elected for a second yearly term along with the other the State Officers: Secretary Stephen Cohen, Treasurer Dale Trott, Advocate Vince Grauso and Warden Chris Powers. The event is certainly a special opportunity to connect with Brother Knights from around the State of Maryland and to make new friends. Think about attending next year, you will be very happy if you do. The Council is kicking off our Annual Baby Bottle Campaign in support of Centro Tepeyec and the Gabriel Network. Our Knights will distribute the baby bottles at all Mother s Day Masses. We are planning to run the program until June 21, Father s Day. Please contact the Grand Knight if you are able to help pass out bottles on May 9 and May 10. Thanks to those members who recently paid the 2015 Council dues. I am looking for a few more dues checks before I can close the books on 2015 dues. Dues are just $35 a year, but if paying that amount at once is a problem, payment arrangements can be made. Alan Cecilio, PFN A Message from Deputy Grand Knight Andy Michaels Five of our newest members will be going for their Second Degree on May 6th. We will be going to St. Francis of Assisi in Fulton for a combined First and Second Degree, double degree exemplifications. We are excited about this wonderful opportunity for our members to advance to the next degree. Stay tuned for the next Third Degree, we are looking forward to May 29th to go to Patuxent Council in Laurel. We are preparing for the 2015 Annual Maryland State Council Car Raffle. Soon you will see your raffle tickets come out in the mail. Be ready to sell your tickets. Remember the Council receives 60 percent of the proceeds from our sales. This is our most success fund raiser for the year and we all can make a very significant contribution toward the success of this annual program. Family of the Month Alan and Giuliana Wolcott The Grand Knight Bill and his Lovely Lady Maria together with Sir Knight Ramon Bueno and his Lovely Lady Terri and Deputy Grand Knight Andy attended the 117th Annual Maryland State Council Convention in Ocean City. This three day event is filled with important Knight s business, awards presentations and fraternal Left to right: Alan, Alina, Oliver, Giuliana and Luciana

Dear brothers I would like to introduce myself and my beautiful family: my wife Giuliana Centty, my son Oliver and two daughters Luciana and Alina. We have been active parishioners at St. John the Baptist Catholic Community for almost 8 years. Some of you may know me either as one of the assistant scoutmaster's in the SJB Cub Scout and Boy Scout Troop 1441, or you may also know me as St. John the Jogger for the 5K fundraiser for the school at St. John the Baptist. Guliana and I were married at St. Michael's Catholic Church in beautiful downtown Baltimore, Maryland in In 1999 we purchased a small dental office in Hillandale, just off New Hampshire Avenue, and moved into the area. By 2002 Oliver was here and shortly thereafter my two girls came and we are now active in the community. In our house there are always family and fun things happening. We have a row of fruit trees and a large vegetable garden that we tend to starting in the spring. As long as the birds or deer don t get there first, we enjoy the fruits of our labors all summer. As a family we travel every year to some place or another but enjoy it best when visiting my family in Connecticut or Giuliana s family in Peru. Giuliana is the heart and soul of our family. You could not find a more organized, outgoing and friendly person. I am blessed that she found me. Cleary if it were not for Giuliana, I would not be where I am today. My son Oliver really enjoys lacrosse and also being an active scout at troop 1441 at SJB. He is both ultimately polite, helpful and well spoken. When you see him you will find a dedication and persistence you don t see in someone so young. Left to right: Angelica Romero, Jalannia Sutton, Mariana Vera, Matt Aujero, Monica Morales, Sarita Vera, Lorena Quintanilla The staff at Centro Tepeyac would love for all to visit our new location at the McCarrick Center (12247 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20902). We have so much to share of our new vision in fighting for the Pro-Life movement. We also want to mingle and THANK YOU for supporting mothers at our center! Open House will take place Saturday, May 16 between the hours of 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Light food and beverages will be served. The Gabriel Network Luciana is the creative one always building, something with almost anything she finds. She loves assembling works of art in a useful manner from objects that she finds laying around. She loves running and equally playing competitive lacrosse. Alina is a combination of all of us with an outgoing personality and a willingness to tell you what s on her mind. Intelligent, bright and inquisitive, I have nicknamed her Madame President as I expect her to be the president of United States in Thank you for allowing me to share my family with you today, With Jesus Stephen J. Wallace Executive Director I am humbled to share our twentieth year of serving women who are experiencing a crisis pregnancy with you, our faithful donors and partners.

Thank you to all of you who stand behind us-- some having just joined us and some having been with us since the day we opened our doors. I'd also like to congratulate Jim Sharbaugh on his retirement from the Gabriel Network staff. Jim was Gabriel's first Executive Director and served most recently as Director of Volunteer Programs. Gabriel would not be the ministry it is today without Jim's tireless efforts. We are glad to know that he will continue to volunteer, but we will miss seeing his face in the office every day is already an exciting year at Gabriel, and throughout the year we'll keep you informed about all that is happening as we continue to serve the greater Washington DC and Baltimore areas. In His service, Stephen J. Wallace Executive Director Knight s Lecture Series The next talk in our Lecture Series will be by Roger Whelan on Relive the American Revolution. In addition to recounting the events surrounding the founding of our nation, he will describe the role that our Catholic religion played at the time. There will be a surprising revelation about George Washington. The talk will take place at 7:30 PM on May 27 in the Lyon Center. To those that have not yet visited the Shrine of St. Anthony, this same talk will be given there on Saturday, May 30 from 2:00 to 3:00 PM. The Shrine is located at Folly Quarter Road, Ellicott City, MD. Flyers for this talk will be posted in the parish office and also on the Council website. The suggested donation for the talk at the Shrine is $10. Fraternal Benefits Agent s Report The Value of Membership Referrals As a professional insurance agent, one of the things I appreciate most is when one of my brother Knight clients or his wife refers another member to me. This is a great endorsement of the service I provided. It tells me that they were so pleased with what I helped them accomplish that they want me to help others achieve the same level of financial safety and security. When I meet with you, please pass along the names of those who might be able to benefit from the analysis that I provide. Similarly, there is no stronger membership recruiting tool than the referral. How many of us know an eligible Catholic male who is not a member of the Knights of Columbus? Do you have Catholic family or friends, local or not, who have yet to join? Most likely, they ve never been asked and don t know enough about the Order to seek out membership on their own. If you have names of potential members, please pass them along to me or your Grand Knight. Let us know if we can use your name when we contact the gentlemen in question. It s always more effective to tell a candidate for membership that he was recommended by a current member, especially someone he knows. Don t worry if the candidate is outside the area I serve or beyond the district of the local councils, we can make sure we put these future members in touch with the right people in their communities. New members are the lifeblood of the Order. All the good deeds done by the Order are driven by the members. Over the past decade, Knights have given more than $1.5 billion to charity and provided in excess of 670 million hours of service. And our membership has merely scratched the surface in North America. Imagine the potential. David N. Luksic Field Agent Knights of Columbus (301) david.luksic@kofc.org Program Director Reports Church Director (DGK Andy Michaels): As in years past, the Knights will participate at the Annual May Crowning of Our Blessed Mother. This year the date is May 9. How special it is that this is just before our celebration of MOTHER'S DAY. We will attend the 8:30 AM Mass and proceed to the shrine of Our Lady on the north side of the church. We will sing, pray the Rosary and Crown our Lady of Grace. Come to this very special opportunity to gather to honor our Mother, Mary- Queen of the Knights.

Family Director (SK Bernard Nestor): The KofC Sunday ends soon. The last breakfast will be on May 17. Before that, on May 10, Mothers' Day, we will celebrate that day with all mothers and grandmothers in the parish, offering them free breakfast. This is a tradition that the Council is proud to continue. We also take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who have helped this year for the success of this program. We also thank all the patrons, the parishioners, for their support. We will be back in September, refreshed and ready to serve again. Lecturer (Roger Whelan): Our next Lecture Series talk will be by Roger Whelan on Relive the American Revolution. He will highlight the role that Catholics have played in our nation s founding. The talk will be at 7:30 PM, May 27, in the Lyon Center. He will give the same talk at 2:00 PM on May 30 at the Shrine of St. Anthony. Culture of Life (SK Ramon Bueno) In this month of Mary, there are many occasions for us to reflect on that greatest gift of all, LIFE, and the role that mothers play in nurturing and sustaining life. Council (PGK Jack Sherman): The Knights Away to Charlottesville, VA was cancelled due to lack of participation. The next Knights Out will be at Lee s Kitchen on May 28 (see the flyer at the end of this newsletter). Community (PGK Stu Sklamm): Our Council will be presenting a letter from John Strawbridge, Co- Chairperson for the Program for Helping Persons with Intellectual Disabilities, to CHI at its next business meeting on May 20. This letter instructs CHI on how to collect the $1000 awarded to them from the KofC Tootsie Roll Drive concluded last fall.
