Saint John the Baptist Council Words from the Grand Knight Let's focus on Charity. Second Summer Edition 2015 One of our brothers told me once that he joined the Knights in order to participate in charitable works. He wanted to team up with other men of like spirit and working together accomplish what would likely not be accomplished alone. In the spirit of Pope Francis teaching, let us think CHARITY and work in CHARITY. Just recently he said The poor have much to teach us about humanity, goodness and sacrifice. As Christians, we have an additional reason to love and serve the poor; for in them we see the face and the flesh of Christ, who made himself poor so to enrich us with his poverty (cf. 2 Cor 8:9). Let s shift our focus from ourselves and prepare for simple service. Service, first to our Parish Community, to strengthen it with our labors. Then we venture into the streets to seek ways to serve the poorest among us. When the Holy Father assists the poor here in Washington during his September visit he will teach us by example how we are to respond. Think of ways to join him in serving, giving, sacrificing, and reaching out by supporting the weak and the disadvantaged. In CHARITY we can develop our response to Pope Francis who echoes our Lord when Jesus said I assure you as often as you did it for one of my least brothers, you did it for me. (Mt 25:40) All for the Greater Glory of God, Andy Andrew Michaels Grand Knight GrandKnight11106@gmail.com
Getting to Know Each Other - Rob and Peggy Farrell Our family at present is Peggy and Rob; our daughter Tess, her husband Matt Wiley, their children James and Fiona; and our son Sean and his wife Jenna. Our story began in 1974 when Rob, the fourth and youngest child of an Irish-Catholic family from Maitland, FL and Peggy, the third of four children from Fernandina Beach, FL enrolled at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta to study Chemical Engineering. Long-haired Rob nodding off in the back of class and eager student Peggy in the front didn t have much use for each other at first, but eventually became friends. The couple began dating in As graduation and a possible separation loomed, Rob panicked and proposed marriage. The couple was married in June, The wedding was performed by Rob s uncle, Rev. Edward J. Corcoran, OSFS in Peggy s home town of Fernandina Beach, FL. Father Corcoran was the long-time pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Vienna, VA. Although Peggy was raised Methodist, she agreed to a Catholic wedding. Married life began in Albany, GA with both of us working for the Procter and Gamble Company. We were blessed with our firstborn, Teresa Jean, in During our time together, Peggy always attended Sunday mass with Rob. She decided to convert to the Catholic faith and did so at our daughter s baptism at St. Teresa s Catholic Church in Albany. Shortly thereafter, the family relocated to Gainesville, FL so Rob could pursue graduate studies at the University of Florida. Peggy found work with an environmental consulting firm. In 1985 we were blessed with a son, Sean Richard. In Gainesville we attended St. Augustine Catholic Church on the University of Florida campus. Sean was baptized at St. Augustine. In 1988 the Farrell family moved to Colesville, MD, a central location for Peggy s commute to Northern Virginia and Rob s commute to Laurel. After trying on a few area Catholic churches, we joined St. John the Baptist. Our children received religious education and the sacraments, highlighted by our daughter s wedding in Life had been very full with two children and two careers. As things became less hectic, we began to get more involved in serving the community. Rob began volunteering with the Shepherd s Table 4 th
Friday group in Peggy has joined me those Fridays at Shepherd s Table since our youngest left for college in In 2004 we both began serving as lectors, primarily at the 10:30 Mass in the church. Continuing to hear the call to serve, Peggy successfully ran for Parish Council in 2014 and Rob joined the Knights in The Baby Bottle Success The Annual Baby Bottle Campaign formally ended on Father s Day, June 21st. Jean Marsich, Weedie Drittler, Maria Legato, Alan Cecilio, Ramon Bueno, Andy Michaels and led by Bill Legato met in the Parish Center to sort and bundle the collection on Monday, June 22nd. Over $3, has been donated so far and more is expected when additional bottles are returned over the next several weeks. The campaign is a blessing from the parishioners who year after year support the culture of life through their donations for the care of expectant mothers. One parishioner said This is the best event in our parish. May God richly bless you for your generosity? In Appreciation.
38 people attended the Council Appreciation Dinner on June 23rd at Mamma Lucia s Restaurant in Olney. The outgoing Grand Knight, Bill Legato, presented certificates and gifts to Maria Legato, Weedie Drittler, Jack Sherman, Howard Benson, Bernard Nestor, Rodney Kerby, Andy Michaels, Mike Johns, David Rinn, Bill Godfrey, Randy Shannon, Al Shanefelter, Roger Whelan, Bob Frank, Paul Perkins and Alan Cecilio. Others deserving special mention who were not at the dinner are Ramon and Terri Bueno, Stu and Joan Sklamm, and Cam Mcfeeters from the parish office. A special note of thanks goes to Jack Sherman, who made arrangements for this dinner and many others throughout the year. Finally, the Council expresses it appreciation to its Chaplain, Father David, who has supported our work in many ways, most notably the very successful Church Recruitment Drive. Food for our Hungry Neighbors - Bill Legato and Jim McGarrity load food items for the delivery Bill Legato, Arlene McGarrity, Chris Leary
Jim McGarrity, his wife Arlene, and Bill Legato delivered 1800 pounds of food from the Capital Area Food Bank to the St. Camillus food pantry on June 11. The St Camillus food pantries distributes food to 800 families per month (3 bags per family of four once a month). If you want to help with future deliveries (loading and unloading packaged goods to and from a pickup truck, usually on Thursdays between 10am and 2pm), contact Jim McGarrity ( , jmcgarrityarl@yahoo.com) or Bill Legato ( , wmlegato@verizon.net). Our Supreme Insurance Representative A Founding Notion: Protecting the Breadwinner s Income While jobs may be safer in 2015, accidents, injuries, and illnesses that can impact your ability to work still happen. Most, in fact, do not happen on the jobsite or place of employment. Did you know that a 2011 study revealed that more than 95 percent of the long-term disability claims on file were not work related? The Knights have always sought to protect members families from the loss of a breadwinner. I m sure you know all about Father McGivney s vision for our insurance program. But you may not know that Father McGivney also wanted to find a way to help members who couldn t work because of an illness. After all, the loss of the breadwinner does not have to mean that person s death; it can also mean the loss of the breadwinner s income. Consider that loss for a moment. How would your family fare if a source of income suddenly stopped? Could a dual-income family manage on one income stream? What about young families with a working father and a mother who cares for the children? What if his income halted due to an accident or illness? I ve heard some people say they have coverage at work, but too many aren t sure what this coverage entails, how much income it would provide or for how long. Having this protection counts for something, certainly, but it isn t yours ; it s provided by the company for which you work at their discretion. It could be eliminated tomorrow. That s where a personally-owned disability income insurance product, like Income Armor, comes into play. It can offer valuable income replacement in the event of an injury or illness... If you have a job, you must know about this coverage. David N. Luksic Field Agent Knights of Columbus (301) david.luksic@kofc.org A Big Thank You - To Tony Cruz, Rob Farrell, Rodney Kerby and Stu Sklamm for helping out at the CHI Bingo Night on June 30th.
