1 g{x V{tÜÄÉààx XÇV{tÅtwx V{tÜÄÉààx V{tÑàxÜ AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS JUNE 2013 YÜÉÅ à{x Wxá~ Éy à{x WxtÇAAA \ have spent the last week with my brain in 1,000 different places. Our new organ has been arriving in stages; I have had books and anthems piled high on my desk as I ve worked at planning worship for the fall (I have every stitch of music planned from now until Baptism of the Lord Sunday in January now that s a feat!); I am thinking toward all of the events surrounding the fall as we celebrate a new organ in our worship space; the list goes on and on, and I know that many of you are in the same place with the day to day hard work as we move into a time that SHOULD slow down a bit in our work lives. The work of your chapter has certainly been ramped up in the past month. We installed the new Executive Board that will begin their work in June. We celebrated the work of those who are moving on from the Executive Board. Our appreciation goes to John Bailey and to Susan Talley for the wonderful Adam Ward, dean work that they have done in the past few years on the board. Many thanks also go to Stephen and Susan Talley for the beautiful Installation dinner and service that they presented for our Chapter: the music, food and worship were wonderful. Our Regional Convention steering committee is working VERY hard behind the scenes to get this event underway. You will be seeing more and more about this in the coming months, so please keep your eyes open and be ready to say yes when asked to serve or better yet, VOLUNTEER to be a part of something that promises to be AMAZING in every way. Matthew Brown, our Sub-Dean, is hard at work putting the finishing touches on a year of programming that will include education, entertainment and enrichment. This will all kick off with our Progressive Dinner and Recital on September 20. Be sure that your calendar(s) is / are marked! Continued on following page. The mission of the American Guild of Organists is to enrich lives through organ and choral music. To achieve this, we: Encourage excellence in the performance of organ and choral music; Inspire, educate, and offer certification for organists and choral conductors; Provide networking, fellowship, and mutual support; Nurture future generations of organists; Promote the organ in its historic and evolving roles; and Engage wider audiences with organ and choral music. 2 From the Desk of the Dean (Continued ) All of this is exciting, but even MORE exciting is our upcoming summer of recitalists for the Summer Recital Series! Have you put each recital on your calendar? There is a vast amount of variety this summer, and it would be absolutely criminal to miss a moment of it! What a great opportunity to invite friends. Don t just invite them offer to pick them up, take them to dinner and then to the recital. There s no greater free series anywhere, and it affords us to support the educational arm of our chapter with the Stigall Student Scholarship. Wow! After documenting all of this for you, I m almost exhausted! There is SO much going on in our community and particularly in our chapter. Find a way to be involved and to make yourself available to the good work of our Guild! 6 CODE OF ETHICS Preamble: The purpose of the American Guild of Organists is to promote the organ in its historic and evolving roles, to encourage excellence in the performance of organ and choral music, and to provide a forum for mutual support, inspiration, education, and certification of Guild members. Voting members are entitled to enjoy the privileges and are expected to accept the responsibilities of membership in the Guild. Members shall be considered equally for Guild offices and participation in Guild activities. These are the rules that shall be considered binding upon all voting members in good standing. RULE 1. Members shall promote good working relationships within the American Guild of Organists and shall respect the employment of colleagues. Members shall address differences between themselves and other members by following the procedures outlined in the Discipline. RULE 2. Members shall not seek or appear to be seeking employment for themselves, a student, or a colleague, in a position held by someone else. Members shall apply for employment only for a position which the employer, with the knowledge of the incumbent musician, has officially and publicly declared vacant by announcement of the vacancy. RULE 3. In cases pending under the Procedures or in cases where the National Council has determined that a position has been made vacant by wrongful termination of a member of the American Guild of Organists, members shall not seek or accept regular or permanent employment for themselves, a student, or colleague at that Institution until the National Council is satisfied that differences between the Guild and the Institution have been resolved. Interim services may be provided for a period of 90 days. RULE 4. Members shall obtain the approval of the incumbent musician before accepting an engagement for a wedding, funeral, or other service requested by a third party. In such cases, the incumbent should receive his/her customary fee, and the third party is expected to provide it. It is the responsibility of the guest member to inform the third party of this rule. Members are advised to protect themselves as incumbents in this regard by negotiating employment contracts which secure these fees and which provide some responsibility, oversight, and control as to choice of music, etc. RULE 5. Members shall conduct professional activities with truthfulness, honesty and integrity, and shall maintain sensitivity in matters of a personal or confidential nature. RULE 6. Members shall not discriminate against others on the basis of race, national origin, age, religious affiliation, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, disability, or medical condition (including, but not limited to, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome).
